I haven't heard of any 'accidents' with methane and oxygen in a fizzy drink bottle not greater than 500cm3. (There have been mishaps with hydrogen/oxygen mixes, also with propane/oxygen)
Public school teachers tend to not want to lose their jobs since we want to "protect the children." Even controlled experiments with a miniscule amount of risk are discouraged.
