so im reaaally interested in making a hackintosh but like on steroids and i need it to blow the best mac pro out there. I want to use an intel i7 cpu with Asus P7P55D motherboard. 8 gig of ram and all that good stuff. To get to the point, I want to make a hackintosh reaaally fast. I need to know, does it matter what mother board and cpu i use? do u think the cpu and the motherboard will be able to run a mac os?
@GreatDude2008 Look at the latest Macs being released, see what they have, and then buy one of those. It's going to be Intel, of course.
I would never try to force Mac OS X onto hardware it was not designed for. On occasion it can work, but it's often riddled with problems and reinstallation headaches.
I've installed 10.5.7 on a Asus M2N-E, AMD 64x2 4800+, 2GB ddr2@800MHz, nVidia 8500GT made by Gigabyte 512mb/128 and a 250GB WD SATA whit a LG DVD-RW IDE. It works fine and i'vd installed it with no problems.
@thejapanesechallenge If you buy a Mac how much times can you install OS X from the disk your mac came with? Is it unlimited in case your Mac crashes or something?
I still try find out where to find the white cd with the bootloader, i try go to the info that have in button bar but well, dont have any link with the iso, something like that?!
@thejapanesechallenge Kewl! I'm also dual booting Windows 7 and Snow Leopard. I'm only doing this just to have around sometimes though, I already have a MacBook.

I don't see a reason why not to use "pirated distro" instead the retail DVD. Installing retail copy on non Apple PC is illegal (not that I care) while "hacked" (patched) distro is completely legal. And there is no difference, patched distros are even easier to install and work with more hardware than the retail ones.
Anyway, nice job Fox, but you do realize that you are braking the law by doing this? (Installing a retail Apple DVD on non Apple PC)
You are misinformed. The EULA merely states that you must install the software on "Apple-labeled hardware." This is sufficiently vague, and no courts have yet ruled on the issue, as Apple has not brought it up. The legality of installing a legally purchased retail copy of Mac OS X on a "regular" PC is undetermined, and has not been ruled on.
A hacked distro is completely illegal, since it is tampering and there is a history of case precedent against such behavior, making it clearly a violation.
LOL! Yaeh, but both issues are "vague" if you look at it that way. The thing is, "Hackintosh" installations are so few Apple does not want to be bothered by them. But that "Apple labeled" argument is shallow, no court will recognize a PC with Apple sticker as "Apple LABELED H/W". By law, a "Label" is MANUFACTURERS label, only Apple can label their PC as Apple PCs.
Don't get me wrong, I am building "Hackintosh" PC for a while, I support your tuts, but I don't like your "distro hostility"
Clarkkov, I don't think you have a basic understanding of IP law. I've discussed this issue and issues like this with a variety of IP lawyers, and the "Apple-labeled hardware" clause is, according to them, too vague and difficult to defend in court. Apple would have a hard time trying to pin down what exactly "Apple-labeled" is.
If you purchase a third-party HDD for a Mac Pro and install OS X on it, is that breaking the EULA? What hardware must it be installed on? The HDD? The CPU? The RAM?
As you see, Apple's clause is likely indefensible in a court of law that requires very particular definitions.
A distro is completely illegal for a number of reasons. It is absolutely NOT the property of whoever hacked it. It's akin to taking a copyrighted Hollywood movie, and then editing a few scenes out and claiming it's now not copyrighted content.
Currently, it is NOT illegal to install a retail, legally purchased OS X on a PC. There is no basis for calling it illegal.
Actually there was a court case where someone stuck on an apple sticker and because the OS was installed, there was a Manufactures label, along with a fake, digital Manufactures label on the PC itself. Apple lost the case. Your are informed though.
I would need references to this case. I don't believe such a case ever existed, it may very well be an "urban legend." The only case I know of remotely close to the issue is the battle Apple is having with Psystar, but the issue at contention is not relevant to home users installing Mac OS X on their systems.
Do you have the files? If so, they generally come in an ISO format. You can burn the files to a CD using Disk Utility in Mac OS X, or by using the built-in disc burning in Windows 7. I am not sure about Vista, but you can always download a third-party application to do it. Search for "free iso burner."
If burning on a Mac, open Disk Utility, go to File > Open Disk Image. Then, highlight the new disk image from the options below, and click the top icon labeled "Burn."
Wtf, on the list my gfx card isnt listed there. i got a XFX Gforce 285 1gig physx but do i have a chance to get it to work? MAC is so damn wierd. cant make it work unless u have compitable parts! lol
please help me? im new to all this stuff. can u tell me if my system is compatible? its a toshiba satellite pro L310. intel centrino. running on vista basic. when i check in control panel, says intel(R) core(TM)2 duo CPU T 5670 @ 1.8 GHz it has 3.0 gb ram, system type is 32 bit operating sys, i have no idea what any of these mean. its a kinda new laptop. been in use for a while. i am getting a mac OS X 10.6 snow leopard cd tmr. will my laptop work?
I saved a LOT of money. Although a genuine Mac Pro is a better machine because of the motherboard and RAM, there's no way to get what I need for HD video editing without spending at MINIMUM over $2700 for a genuine Mac. The best iMac right now isn't as good as what I have, and it costs about $1000 more than what I paid (and I have dual monitors).
I ran into the same trouble while helping a friend set up his Hackintosh. Unfortunately, the next day I left the country so I couldn't keep working on it. Check on the Insanely Mac website and see what people are doing to get around that problem.
Here's my idea... the BOOT-132 CD loads up properly on the first run, so try copying the kexts from that CD and put them into the Extras folder on the HDD after installing Chameleon boot loader. Just an idea, may not work.
Can anyone give a link to a photo of the -v output where it hangs, or a video of it loading up with the -v parameter?
Newer Intel CPUs work well. For example, Intel Core 2 Duo series, Quad Core series, etc. the i7 is still too new and we should wait for more official support from Apple. Always wait for Apple to have official support for critical components like CPUs, graphics cards, and so forth.
Hi MUK546. Are you aware that the Mac Mini is bottom-of-the-line in terms of specs? My current system has: 3.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, 4 hard drives with 3.5TB of space, a full-featured ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, and room for expansion with new cards/drives. A Mac Mini has no room for expansion, and *highest* specs are: 2.26GHz, 4GB RAM, *one* hard drive at 320GB, and a laptop-grade low-end GPU. Additionally, that "high-end" Mac Mini costs $1024 w/ no keyboard, mouse or monitor.
"Calm down?" Anyway, yes, the Mac Pro is a beast in terms of power. Better motherboard with nicer RAM, CPU, etc. However, look at the base price for a Mac Pro: $2499. That's a crapload of money. That gets you 3GB RAM, 2.66GHz, and one 640GB HDD. Modern benchmarks show that higher clock speed is more effective than more cores beyond 2. My system costs a fraction of the cost and isn't that far off in power. Remember, most apps can't use more than two CPU cores.
look if you build a pc yes its always cheaper but come on have you seen a mac pro look at it! no wires on the inside its a beast and if you can afford a house like that and to build a computer like that you can afford a mac pro
And that's the point. They are VERY nice machines, both inside and out, but for the dollar, the value is relatively low in terms of sheer power. Apple needs to release a mid-line tower option, with a decent price and expandability. Until they do, Hackintoshes will fill that role. It's the largest segment of consumers looking for desktops, mid-line machines.
For some people, but it offers zero expandability beyond increasing the RAM. I own an iMac, two MacBooks, and just sold two iBooks. As a video editor, I need a at minimum two fast drives to store and work with video. The iMac offers one. I could connect another via Firewire, but my video camera uses the Firewire, so that's out. USB is absolutely unusable for HD video. The iMac doesn't meet my needs, and the Mac Pro is serious dollar over-kill.
The stuff you say about an IDE DVD-Drive, that's just not true My IDE-Driuve worked out of the Box just finde, without any additional KEXTs. It's the same with my Harddrives. I only have a SATA DVD-Rom-Drive in my PC, everything else is IDE and all Drives work fine. If you are going to buy new Hardware, buy SATA, but if you don'T have SATA Drives yet, just try with IDE
It's important to listen carefully and understand what is being said, not what you hear from a casual listening. I said that most people have trouble and cannot get it to work. This is a very common and well-recognized problem, and is discussed at length on a variety of threads at Insanely Mac. Some have had success, but most appear to have problems using IDE drives. Thanks for your comments, but just because it's YouTube comments doesn't mean we have to be purposefully argumentative.
Yeah, you're right. It just sounded to me, that no one ever was able to get IDE to work and I wanted to state out, that it actually is possible to use IDE Drives Apple used IDE Drives in their computers, so OS X supports them
It's, of course, absolutely right, to tell the poeple to buy SATA Drives for their Hackintoshes, if they buy new PC Components anyway, but in my opinion they should check if their IDE Drives work before they buy new Drives
After i running the bootloader disc, the screen just restart and hang on the Apple logo white screen, it doesn't goes in to the installation page, any idea?
Hi guys and Japanese Challenge, i managed to get my leopard disc installed its a 10.5.1 and it boots up just fine but i think it is failing to detect my graphics card. Its a 9800GT anyone knows what kext i must use?? I tried NVinject but it crashes my computer. Thankss
hey i wanted to do this on my computer but im having difficulty in getting the bootloader on a disc. The stuff on the link sounds a bit complicated. Any help??
Sweet Tutorial man, but i have a dilemma....it runs fine on a virtual machine but because i have a custom built computer i don't have a DVD drive, so i've made an ISO image of the leopard disk...is there a way i can image it to a partition and boot from that?
well I've gotten a lot of questions by mail and comments, but never that one!
I honestly have no idea if that's even possible. The installation ISO file would not be Mac OS X "ready to use," so to speak.. it would need to run the installation. To my knowledge, there is no way to do outside of virtualization unless you have it on DVD. can you buy an external DVD drive that is bootable? If not, can you boot off USB? You'd need a huge USB stick though... or a USB drive if that's bootable.
hmm, i have another idea, i can install it onto Vmware Workstation 6.5 or lower, so once installed can i "image" it to another partition and boot from that? Thanks for the reply again :D
if your going to spend all of that money building a computer you might as well just buy a mac...

I would need references to this case. I don't believe such a case ever existed, it may very well be an "urban legend." The only case I know of remotely close to the issue is the battle Apple is having with Psystar, but the issue at contention is not relevant to home users installing Mac OS X on their systems.

how do u make the disk i can't get that done
Dragon125125 2 years ago
Do you have the files? If so, they generally come in an ISO format. You can burn the files to a CD using Disk Utility in Mac OS X, or by using the built-in disc burning in Windows 7. I am not sure about Vista, but you can always download a third-party application to do it. Search for "free iso burner."
If burning on a Mac, open Disk Utility, go to File > Open Disk Image. Then, highlight the new disk image from the options below, and click the top icon labeled "Burn."

you could try ipc osx86. The disk works well and there is less hardware issues. Although I strongly think you should use a boot 132 disk

What do you think of the Rebel EFI that Psystar released?
eyesgotyourgoat 2 years ago
Ridiculously expensive solution to a problem that has free solutions that work just as well.
thejapanesechallenge 2 years ago
Nice way to sum it up haha

did you save any money after all the parts you had to purchase + the computer
wouldn't it be more cost friendly to buy an official macintosh computer.
Cmac787 2 years ago
I saved a LOT of money. Although a genuine Mac Pro is a better machine because of the motherboard and RAM, there's no way to get what I need for HD video editing without spending at MINIMUM over $2700 for a genuine Mac. The best iMac right now isn't as good as what I have, and it costs about $1000 more than what I paid (and I have dual monitors).

I'm not surprised that this comment comes only a few hours after I changed my Hackintosh Installation video still to me and the kitty :).
The cat is my wife's. I am not gay.

I ran into the same trouble while helping a friend set up his Hackintosh. Unfortunately, the next day I left the country so I couldn't keep working on it. Check on the Insanely Mac website and see what people are doing to get around that problem.

Have the same motherboard. same problem.

Here's my idea... the BOOT-132 CD loads up properly on the first run, so try copying the kexts from that CD and put them into the Extras folder on the HDD after installing Chameleon boot loader. Just an idea, may not work.
Can anyone give a link to a photo of the -v output where it hangs, or a video of it loading up with the -v parameter?

is a intel i7 cpu good
xxmajorsonx 2 years ago
yea but what cpu is good for mac
xxmajorsonx 2 years ago
Newer Intel CPUs work well. For example, Intel Core 2 Duo series, Quad Core series, etc. the i7 is still too new and we should wait for more official support from Apple. Always wait for Apple to have official support for critical components like CPUs, graphics cards, and so forth.

About ¥70,000, or around $700 USD.

LilWayne56789 2 years ago
a mac mini is 599 USD so buy a real mac
muk546 2 years ago
Additionally, that "high-end" Mac Mini costs $1024 w/ no keyboard, mouse or monitor.
thejapanesechallenge 2 years ago
ok calm down the mac mini is a mini desktop! if you want to compare your hackintoish to a mac pro then you will be owned
muk546 2 years ago
"Calm down?" Anyway, yes, the Mac Pro is a beast in terms of power. Better motherboard with nicer RAM, CPU, etc. However, look at the base price for a Mac Pro: $2499. That's a crapload of money. That gets you 3GB RAM, 2.66GHz, and one 640GB HDD. Modern benchmarks show that higher clock speed is more effective than more cores beyond 2. My system costs a fraction of the cost and isn't that far off in power. Remember, most apps can't use more than two CPU cores.
thejapanesechallenge 2 years ago
look if you build a pc yes its always cheaper but come on have you seen a mac pro look at it! no wires on the inside its a beast and if you can afford a house like that and to build a computer like that you can afford a mac pro
muk546 2 years ago
And that's the point. They are VERY nice machines, both inside and out, but for the dollar, the value is relatively low in terms of sheer power. Apple needs to release a mid-line tower option, with a decent price and expandability. Until they do, Hackintoshes will fill that role. It's the largest segment of consumers looking for desktops, mid-line machines.
thejapanesechallenge 2 years ago
the imac fits the mid range needs...
muk546 2 years ago

If you are going to buy new Hardware, buy SATA, but if you don'T have SATA Drives yet, just try with IDE
northstah 2 years ago
It's important to listen carefully and understand what is being said, not what you hear from a casual listening. I said that most people have trouble and cannot get it to work. This is a very common and well-recognized problem, and is discussed at length on a variety of threads at Insanely Mac. Some have had success, but most appear to have problems using IDE drives. Thanks for your comments, but just because it's YouTube comments doesn't mean we have to be purposefully argumentative.
thejapanesechallenge 2 years ago
Yeah, you're right. It just sounded to me, that no one ever was able to get IDE to work and I wanted to state out, that it actually is possible to use IDE Drives Apple used IDE Drives in their computers, so OS X supports them
It's, of course, absolutely right, to tell the poeple to buy SATA Drives for their Hackintoshes, if they buy new PC Components anyway, but in my opinion they should check if their IDE Drives work before they buy new Drives

Sweet Tutorial man, but i have a dilemma....it runs fine on a virtual machine but because i have a custom built computer i don't have a DVD drive, so i've made an ISO image of the leopard disk...is there a way i can image it to a partition and boot from that?
mearsy09 2 years ago
well I've gotten a lot of questions by mail and comments, but never that one!
You'd need a huge USB stick though... or a USB drive if that's bootable.
thejapanesechallenge 2 years ago
hmm, is it possible to use the DVD drive from my laptop and use it for my computer??? Thanks for the reply.
mearsy09 2 years ago
Unfortunately no. You need one that can be connected to your computer directly, through USB/Firewire/eSATA/etc.
thejapanesechallenge 2 years ago
hmm, i have another idea, i can install it onto Vmware Workstation 6.5 or lower, so once installed can i "image" it to another partition and boot from that? Thanks for the reply again :D
mearsy09 2 years ago
It is possible with Hackintosh Vmware. You can use leopard 10.5.6 and runs very well.
dj9mhz 2 years ago
does it run easier on a virtual pc?
jonsutubechannel 2 years ago
if you mean installing and less risk of data loss then yes easier, but its ALOT slower
you want it booted from a native hardrive, unless you can bott from the virtual pc, if you know how tell me xD
