man at 2:15-2:20 it was exactly like sitting in jackson square watching revelers dancing down the street. love how new orleans culture preserves itself naturally without needing hoity toity societies and arts endowments, as if the city is actually expressing itself through its people no matter what century it is.
I think blues is the perfect combination of european knowledge of melody and african sense of rhtym, and it give the basic to the other good stuff (ragtime, jazz, rock n roll, progressive rock, etc). Classical music without getting influenced by african and latin rhytm evolving become weird and scary, but todays crap is.. just crap (stupid easy happy melody and sampling rhytm, nothing improvement here).
@TheSophist2007 Yes it is very cool! Here's an example of how cool it can still be today, behold new school swing - Artist Chinese man. Song Artichaut. - Fucking love that song = )

Man, he really has a problem with drums and non-classically-formed rhythms...honestly. Every word he uses to describe drums is either "thwacking" or "hashing"...you can practically hear the sneer in his voice as he references them throughout this part of the series. It's not a big deal, but damn...it gets annoying after a while.
Yah the series is biased to Classical, and Euro-centric on the whole, but as far as these types of pan-histortical, pan-global treatments go, this one is still quite sensitive and fair; just not as much as it could be.
It might be true. The first topic covered was "melody: the soul of music." I don't mind the biased so much because it isn't too overbearing and the series is still very educational.
Rhythm is much more fundamental to music. You can have rhythm without melody, but you can't have melody without rhythm.
@joshgreen19 : Rhythm implies individual events in time. When you have two different notes one after the other, you have rhythm. No style music is an exception.
@tserhey Rhythm usually refers to a current motion, not just events in time. While it is true that melodies often repeat themselves they certainly don't do it as much as your average drumbeat. You could use rhythm to refer to the timing of a melody, but it's more likely to mean the pulse, beat, tempo and accents of a piece of music.
@ArtHouseQueen I got that impression at times, especially when he makes reference to classical music's implied serenity and a dismissive comment about too much beat being akin to a night out at Ibiza. Sounded a bit elitist.
@ArtHouseQueen I'm supprised at your comment as (sweeping statement but my observation) most drummers including myself are a lot more laid back about attitudes.. They are rarely inverted snobs. This man is pretty middle class. I don't have a problen with that. I don't need to be pidgeon-holed myself, Wishing you well with your drumming. Music should be fun sometimes, See Funcussion on utube you might enjoy it,

What's much more interesting is how rhythm affects people.....and theorizing about why and how.

@Underview Melody without rhythm is certainly possible. Check out Gregorian chants

@ArtHouseQueen My take on one term BASHING is that of implied square bashing as he is refering to soldiers parading.

The development of Syncopation in Ragtime to Swing in Jazz. Uses Fats Waller piano rolls to demonstrate the evolution.
Cross-Rhythms demonstrated by African drummers, and a Brahms Orchestral work (Variations on a Theme of Haydn) !
