Best post 9/11 anthem ever! Took place just 72 days after the attacks. Same as the marriage of some chick with a big ass, a sex tape and a reality show. And some mediocre NBA player with the same first name as his ex.
Absolutely stunning! I think this version, this time, this way was his best ever attempt! He made big burly straight men cry! It takes a lot of talent and a lot of voice to do that! You go boy!
Why the FUCK would you have some musical shit effect in the background that ruins the whole thing? Josh Groban has a good enough voice that he doesn't need some mystical sounds that don't even work well with the anthem itself. WTF
this is truly the greatest rendition ever. Simple and straight, yet rich, clear, powerful, majestic and simply BEAUTIFUL. Pitch perfect! You can clearly hear both the very high and very low notes. Outstanding!

I like how they zoom into the players eyes as if they are expecting them to be crying or something, such a meaningless song, and a waste to be playing it during ballgames. Nobody cares to sit through this.
Wouldn't it be great if people could sing their hearts out and NOT have to deal with the trashers. PUT YOUR video on youtube and lets see what a smart ass you are. I love them all... Thank you everyone.
So, I was watching the top ten worst National Anthem renditions and the second I heard them, I thought of Josh Groban and how amazing his sounded... This one is my favorite one.
I'm so glad he sings this song as if he actually knows the words he's singing. His pause right before "was still there!" is great and gives emphasis to that key line. I hate how so many singers just use vocal acrobatics and all this R&B nonsense and don't even seem to know what the words they're singing mean... they make it sound like any other song. Josh Groban did this anthem proud!
It's like this: Either that song was written just for him years and years before his birth or he was born just to do that song the justice it deserves!!! Amazing performance.
This is the best version I have heard of this song. Not only is Josh Groban a favorite of mine, but he sings this song with such sincerity, it touches me every time... I get the chills and tear up. To not put your hand over your heart, to me, is disrespectful to the me and women who have fought, and are still fighting for our freedom.
OMG! The samething for me too. This was also the first time I had ever heard him. I was walking past a TV at walmart and I couldnt move. His voice had brought me to tears.
I loved how everyone was listening right up to the end. No one calling out in the middle of it, etc. What a beautiful job he did and he was so young then...well, he's young still but he was just starting out when he did this. LOL
flawless...I love how he doesn't try to put his 'spin' on it. People who try to put their own spin on the National Anthem end up messing it up. It's a very simple song meant to be kept simple...and Groban delivers.
OnThinIce57, You called it, I hate when singers disrespect the National Anthem by switching it up. This song has deep meaning, is sung for flag, country, and appreciation to our military. That commands reverence in my book. I think Josh sung this wonderfully. The only sad thing in this clip is most of the lame players not putting their hand on heart. (yes, before anyone on this page starts argueing with me, it is legislated that way). They have an obligation to set a good example.
The song was legislated in 1931 as the National Anthem, updated last year,& the legislation does state that persons should put their hand on their heart (to show respect to the nation, flag and for those who fought for it). The only reason it is the land of the free is because of those vets!! Do you seriously want to tell me overpaid ball players shouldn't show a little appreciation for that, nor set the example to young people? Wow, that is super lame & unpatriotic.. try telling a vet that.
I personally always put my hand on my heart and I do feel others are obligated to do the same but they don't have to. If they want to look unpatriotic it is FINE with me.
@OnThinIce57 If you listen to a lot of Josh Groban, like an obsessed fan (yes, me!) does, you will notice he DOES put a bit of himself into that song. He does do it great, the best I have ever heard. But his inflection and sensation he places on words, how he stresses them, they are all HIM. And you hear it quite a bit in his originals and reproductions. Thanks again, Carly!
@Sakuyamon1 I have heard many of Grobans songs and while I agree He puts emphases on certain notes and such, he keeps it VERY simple, the way it's supposed to be. All I was saying was he didn't try to make the song sound his own. (I.e Beyonce)
@OnThinIce57 Well its not actually a song, but rather a peom with music put to it. So there's not an 'actual' way to sing it... so everyone's adaption is really just another way to sing this poem.
I agree. My ex listens to country and western music. Although he does like Celtic Thunder. I just don't understand anyone who doesn't like Josh's voice.
Yeah, nothing makes ticks me off like Singers coming in and messing up the song. Just sing it like you're proud to be an American. Josh does it beautifully.
At the beginning of this video, Josh looks exactly like a tall hobbit. :-p (Yes, I know this is a few years old, back when he had long curly hobbit-like locks). But, speaking as a Canadian, I say that he sure sings The Star-Spangled Banner well! Go Josh!
Check out Brad Robins if you like Josh Groban. He is simliar in style. Some say he might be the next Josh. He did a great version of "Anthem" that is simliar stylistically to josh.
I am English and love the American Anthem. I have heard many versions.. And i think Josh Grobans turned up loud is easily the Best.. Great Male Voice... Not this Poncy Boyband Crap.....
This was performed on November 22, 2001 in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day, just two months after 9/11. The emotions from that day are still evident here and the patriotism of that song held us together. I'm surprised this didn't get more views than other renditions of our National Anthem, considering it's in the top 5.
And if you will allow me another comment, dear Stephan, my inner conviction is that the USA are the ONLY hope for freedom in this wretched world of ours. I admire your courage and sacrifices in the Middle East. Britain did follow suit, but very shyly. The rest of Europe did its best to remain out of everything. To me, that's cowardice, pure and simple. The USA lead the world, and I hope they will stay on the same path for a very, very long time.
This is, by far, the most outstanding performance of The Star-Spangled Banner I have EVER heard!! This is what being an American is all about. Josh's crystal-clear, angelic voice is perfect for this song. You can tell he means every word he sings. He has beautiful eyes, too, btw. :D
now this is how the song should sound! the percussions? when Josh sang the word FREE... WOW!....FANTASTIC...GOOSEBUMPS!!!!! Josh is one of those male vocalists whose tone is that of a true vocal artist and student!
No, I agree; I didn't mean that Josh was great because he was born in the States. I merely pointed out to Peanutman that he was born in LA because Peanutman said "he was not American". That's all. I never meant to correlate his talent with his place of birth. These are two different things. I hope you will be satisfied with my reply, dear Stephanefan (and, yes, Christ does reign).

it makes me happy to know there's some one else out there who thinks so.
What on earth has that got to do with it ? Talent bears no relation with your place of birth !! And if you do want to know: I am British, born in Poole (UK)[and not chinese]. But I have a deep respect for the USA and its citizens, including you, dear Stephan. All I meant is that Josh sings the US anthem in such a way that the anthem goes right into my soul. You should be happy that some people in Europe are ready to side with the USA, no matter what. And believe me,I MEAN it.
Josh Groban is 100% all-American! He sings in Italian on some of his albums, but haven't you ever looked at an interview with him here on YouTube? Haven't you done the simplest wikipedia search?

Did everyone start singing the anthem in 4/4 instead it's original 3/4 after Whitney did it that way? Regardless, I love Josh
rellenoz 7 months ago
I propose the "Inverse Proportional Vowel Rule of Star-Spangled Banner recitation".
The more vowels you use singing it, the worse the version; the less vowels employed , the better it is.
This rule logically leads to Jimi Hendrix's version being the best ever, and I think that's powerful evidence that it's a damn sound rule.

I'm not American, but I think Josh Groban does this song justice. His voice has that solemnity that IS an anthem.

Josh Groban is 100% all-American! He sings in Italian on some of his albums, but haven't you ever looked at an interview with him here on YouTube? Haven't you done the simplest wikipedia search?
