The different kung fu styles are based on the behaviour of certain animals which maybe why you think it looks silly. Look up shaolin masters and how strong they are. I'm not saying that kung fu is better than karate. But I'm pretty sure that most syles of fighting originate from kung fu. Watch kung fu the original tv series.
