  • Dear Holy Mother of Grid,

You are right. I am a turd. I have tried through a variety of esoteric treatments to allay my turdiosity ah but alas and to no avail. An unrepentant turd I remain.

He should have called Lightfoot and had him tune it for him.

  • That guy should learn to tune the 12 string. He has no business singing with her.

  • @W2n1dowsx Cut the man a bit of slack!!! He featured Joni on his TV show several times when she was just starting out, and gave her a lot of excellent publicity. He was always kind and supportive to her, and showed time and again that he truly recognized and appreciated her immense talent. If he poorly tuned a guitar a couple of times, i don't think that makes him unworthy of singing with her.

  • who cares where it came from, i would happily pay 4 it , if someone would publish it . until then i will thank anyone who lets us see tru talent. songs from the oscar brand show r the best on youtube please leave them so i may be happy!!!!

  • @pobpitts

    Too true! great comment!

  • Thanks!!!! I love her voice so much!!!!

  • Wow, thank you for posting this!

  • The birds may sing "sweet" , but I bet they pale into insignificance when compared to Joni's voice!

  • Thanks for posting! Great that you keep finding all these great videos; how do you do it? * * * * *

  • I like how she's just putting up with his inane jokes.

  • oscar brand had a folk show in nyc as well as Canada....he released many albums , several of bawdy (i.e. dirty, filthy) folksongs so we know what he was thinking up there with young Joni....( with me do me amma dey)

  • to be an average musician and have someone like Joni show up- a once in a generation kind of talent- has to leave you gobsmacked. no wonder the guy's voice cracked. so would have yours, or mine, guaranteed.

  • yea, i said, mine probably woulda

  • My fat cracked when i saw joni. Stunning, every man there is atracted to her. in all these clips the men looked stuned, as i am, youth, looks, knolage, and talent far beond her age. thanx......again 4 post cant stop watching!!!!!!

  • fat cracked?

  • his voice cracked on "brook" at 142

  • he looks attracted to her, i don't blame him...

  • what is the male vocalist's name?

and what did the man say from offstage after the story around 52-54?

  • the male vocalist's name is Dave Van Ronk

  • I'm sorry, but it's not Dave Van Ronk. He's a Canadian, not the rough and tumble New York folk blues figure we all knew.

  • slownoman: looking at 0:03 and 2:34, it sure looks like Dave Van Ronk, "the rough and tumble New York folk blues figure we all knew." That beard and lumberjack shirt is unmistakable.

    ???

The video notes say: "... Oscar Brandt's show "Let's Sing Out." Dave Van Ronk is to the right and the Chapin Brothers to the left."

  • The glance is quick. It could be him. The shirt is not conclusive. I not only saw him play, a friend of mine and I gave Dave a ride from a Berkeley club back to his SF hotel. He was too drunk to even try driving. So I know what he looked like. I just can't tell from those short clips. RIP, Dave.

  • Van Ronk used to play all the time at the Gaslight in NYC when I was there. It looks exactly like him in this video, since I used to see him all the time and he used to offer to buy me drinks. Note the word "offer." LOL... since I don't drink. Very nice video; so glad it's here. Brings back lots of memories of "the old days."

  • Yep, I've been a folkie since about '63, started playing January '65, first gig August '65, and I'm still playing in two bands and doing solos. It was music like this that lit the fire. Dave was great, but Joni is in the pantheon, a no-doubt goddess.

  • @slownoman

Did you ever meet a folk singer by the name of Dayle Stanley who was singing in folk clubs in the early and mid-60s on the east coast? Or Bonnie Dobson?

  • Catherine!!!! You hung out at the Gaslight??!!!! Dylans old stomping grounds! Holy Cats!

  • send2meez: Yes, those were the late, great, wonderful "old days" that we all remember so fondly. LOL... The Gaslight is also where I learned that I enjoyed being "behind the scenes" more than "up on the stage." But we all had our chance at the brass ring and fame and fortune. I'm glad for the way things turned out!

  • Catherine! How is it you were digging this and never turned me on??!!!! LOL

  • I was so lucky to be there back then. Went back to the village recently and they had finally changed the Gaslight's name to something else, and luckily my friend Sandi Sylver was with me and she recognized the place. Sandi was at the Gaslight a lot longer than me - all through the Sam Hood days even in FL - and still remembers everyone's name & what they were doing & where they were. We all really do need to write a book or a blog about this one of these days. Maybe you would want to start one?

  • I wasn't there, Doll, you were. I can only dream of it. YOU need to start the blog- I will read it!

  • send2meez: I can't finish even what work I have already to do; maybe someone out there will start a blog? There's a lot of info scattered around the internet about the Gaslight and the "good old days" so maybe that could be consolidated w/a blog for comments, additions, etc. Some good books have come out as well. The Folk days were interesting, to say the least. A lot of good & bad, a real mixed bag. I was lucky to be there & a small part of it. It seems like yesterday and a million miles away.

  • van ronk looks nothing like that, van ronk is the guy sittin down with the beard.

  • It's Oscar Brand, he had about twenty risque folk albums.

  • funny story...good vocals

  • awesome

  • If only he knew who he had backing up his vocals. Joni seems pretty underwhelmed by his attempts to make eye contact with her. He was lucky to be in the same room with her.

  • it dosnt matter what joni sings , it sends a shiver down my spine. enchanting!thanx 4 post

  • good to see this old joni stuff back up . it made my day! thanx

  • this is the greatest collection! thank you beyond thanks for posting these....absolutely priceless....been a Joni fan forever....thanks again...her style in development as shown through these videos for the world! how wonderful!

  • Wherever did you find this ?! Astonishing to see her so very young and unformed, giving no indication of the towering genius she would become !

  • she ripped it from another YouTubers account without asking--very rude.

  • great addition to the tube.
