I love Japanese (learning Japanese in school btw), and I love The Little Mermaid, and I think the woman doing Ariel in Japan did a very good job, but I also think that her voice is a little too deep, in a way :P Japanese girls being all cute and baby-voiced you know :3 But they found a great woman to do her voicem because her voice is not that different from the original :)
