It don't matter if Clough could have would have with England.
The Fundamental problem with England and the other home nation teams is that we have 11 prima donas that only want to shine for themselves & endorsements and forget about Teamplay or national pride!
Moreover, the culture of WAGS and the media are whispering poison into the ears of our International Players.
Its not just the FA that get it wrong. When Stokoe left Sunderland, Cloughie made it clear he wanted the job only for them to give it to Jimmy Adamson. Cloughie went to Forest and the rests history.
Mind you the SAFC surpassed themselves a decade earlier when they allowed him to leave his coaching job at the club to go and manage Hartlepool. He went on to manage Derby and again the rest is history.
England would have definately have won a tournament if ol' big head was in charge. Narrow minded F.A wuckfits. I still cant believe Cloughy's playing career! 274 appearances 251 goals! Speaks for itself. Football misses characters like Brian Clough.
im a scotsman and it pains me to say that if England had Clough as a manager they would have won the World Cup in 82 or 86 - he got the best out of the most limited of players

FA = Fucking Arseholes..Narrow minded & idiotic they didn't offer Brian the England job...pathetic..all of 'em!! A bunch of fuckin' children too! Rest In Peace Brian..you did good..Your legacy will last in the hearts of the many people who love you..XX
The best football I've seen England play over my 52 years is with Glen Hoddle as manager. It was such a pity he spoilt it all by being a bit of a nutter.
Hoddle innaugurated the era of banning the press from the bus, hotel and training camp that was what set him up for a big fall and he should have known it.
Clough without Taylor at England would have been a disaster. Even with Taylor, Clough would have been denied his vital non-Engllsh players, Gemmill, Robertson, O'Neill, McGovern & Burns. Clough was lucky not to get the England job - England did not have the players at the time to be a success, irrespective of who the manager was.
@helltopo you are wrong, brian clough and peter taylor proved at Derby that they could make average players play way above themselves, with the choice of englands best players and clough and taylor, england would have won the world cup of that i have no doubt.
kennyfrontosa - you're dreaming. The 'average' players Clough and Taylor had at Derby and Forest were far outweighed by quality performers. His men may not have been big charismatic stars, but they could play. As for the England job, if Brian hadn't insulted so many people in the game he probably would have got it, but I doubt he'd have won the World Cup, even with Taylor. John Robertson was the man - and he was Scottish.
@helltopo you are wrong first of all when clough and taylor went to derby which division of the football league were they in and who were the quality performers you talk about?
@ to answer your questions ken - Derby were in struggling in the old division 2 when Clough & Taylor arrived - just like Leeds were when Don Revie was appointed manager.
As for the 'quality performers' at Derby, how about Roy McFarland, Kevin Hector, Terry Hennessy, Colin Todd, Alan Durban, David Nish, Archie Gemmill John O'Hare & of course the mighty Dave Mackay! All these men were internationals and far from average ken!
@helltopo do you realise how stupid this statement is i said when cloughie and taylor went to derby who were there quality performers and you say gemmel,
mackay, todd, mcfarland and hennesey,
yes rightly good players but unfortunately not playing for derby in 1967.
kenny, you asked me who were the quality performers at Derby & I told you. These were players who Taylor & Clough largely bought, not 'average' guys transformed into world beaters by 'genius'.
Derby like Leeds & Liverpool in the same era spent money to gain success - it wasn't just about Clough waving his magic wand.
@helltopo, you know exactly what i asked but scroll down and read again i asked you when clough and taylor went to derby what division where they in and who were the quality performers that you talk about, he took them up to the first division with the addition of only one player and that was dave mackay ( easily checkable ) the great players at derby developed into great players mainly thanks to the motivational skills of brian clough.
@helltopo, another bright feather in cloughies cap was a brilliant midfield player called john mcgovern who he brought with him from that marvelous european club hartlepool, and he turned him into a king of europe can you say that wasn't motivational, I DON'T THINK SO.
@helltopo also just one more comment from me i apologise for saying your other statement was stupid its just that i don't like to see cloughie not given the praise he deserve's because i was a boro fan who never saw him play but did see his teams play at ayresome park, derby and nottingham.
No Kenny, Clough & Taylor got rid of most of the Derby squad they inherited, bringing in the players I mentioned before. Check the facts. I'm not trying to say Clough & Taylor were not a fantastic managerial team, but they didn't make average players great, they paid money for quality performers, just like everyone else.
@helltopo, derby had been in the second division for 10 years, and clough and taylor took them out of there the following year, the only player of note he brought in was dave mackay who was way past his sell by date but taylor saw an ability that the team needed, most of the players you spoke of weren't at derby
and in any case they all of them only became household names through clough, thats fact.
@helltopo, i don't have to look at what i lived through, but as an after thought derby if i remember rightly were great in mackays first and second season, with what was mainly clough and taylors team, i know he signed bruce rioch who was a fav of mine and the ageing franny lee cause he had to replace mcgovern and ohare, cause cloughie took them with him, but what happened to them, h'pool and notts forest after the magic of clough and taylor wore off, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ?
kenny, you DO have to look! You claimed that Clough & Taylor only bought Mackay when they took over, when in truth they got rid of most of the squad they inherited, bringing in men like McFarland, O'Hare, McGovern & Hinton. Clough & Taylor did not 'make average players play way above themselves' - they got rid of their average players and signed quality - just like Revie, & Shankly did.
@helltopo no you have to look at the full point i have made not just you fav bits that are wrong anyway, like i said where were h'pool before and after clough influence,
kenny, of course Clough & Taylor transformed clubs for the better, there is no denying that, but you have to drop this comic book fantasy that he transformed average players into greats. Clough spent a lot of time moaning about his various boards, but they provided the cash which was vital for his success. Great managers need great players & Taylor especially was great at spotting them and signing them.
@helltopo .. sorry just wanted to put you right, haven't been reading all the comments, but have to say as well as buying class, without question he turned average into quality i.e, in no perticular order, john robertson (40 a day), stuart pearce (non-league apprentice electrition) roy keane (unknown irishman), mcgovern, ohare etc
Come on kopiteman none of those guys were 'average' .
Your list includes guys plucked from obscurity, not plodders 'transformed' into world beaters. It's as daft as claiming Bill Shankly turned Kevin Keegan into a great player - Shankly gave him a platform, but the ability was already there, just like the guys you mention.
As Shankly once said
"Great players are born, not made and anyone who tries to tell you they can make a player great are very stupid". (Something like that anyway).
@kennyfrontosa Clough won 10 trophies in his career, but only 2 of them without Taylor. Why do people rave on about Clough, but they seem to forget that he was virtually lost without Taylor.
How good was Don Revie when he walked out on England. what does FA stand for?England have never had a decent manager in the same vain as Cloughie, its all been mediocre shit, from Ron Greenwood to Sven Goran Erickson. Cloughie was the best "England manager England never had" no truer word spoken.
If this was today the FA would be doing everything in their power to get him, then again I wouldnt hold my breath, Absolute joke how he NEVER got the job but Englands loss is Forests gain and he went on to win 2 European Cups
Thats always been the problem with the FA. 'Play it safe' mentality. Clough would of come in and made there life hell, because of his outspoken nature, but he would of got results, he knew how to get the best from what he had. Going off topic slightly but thats 1 reason why i dont like the film, it makes BC look a weak character with no talent. I mean whats the groveling at the end all about...Comeon??!!
Don't forget the late great Peter Taylor. Without Taylor, Old Big 'ed was like Laurel without Hardy, Morecombe without Wise, fish without chips, Posh without.....? I've gone too far on that one ain't I!!!, but you get my point. RIP, B&Txxx

I wish Brian was here now to criticise some of the dickheads of football today, some footballers's (not naming any) need a right good kicking up the arse, also i just seen 'The Damned United' Film, anybody who's a fan of Clough and his work so see it no doubt.
I agree Bob Paisley was fantastic. People ignore him because he was so unassuming and preached the simplicity of the game. He was, in fact, the most knowledgeable manager with brilliant managerial gifts. Ridiculous he was never knighted (they seem to give them away these days).
I agree with you totally! Although NFFC till I die and hate Liverpool and Man Utd as Football clubs I am still big enough to show respect for two of the greatest managers ever! My regards go to Bob Paisley and Sir Matt Busby! I just hope you all show the same respect for Cloughie!! NFFC one day we will be back! When we get Nigel Clough as manager! LOL
it seems like you are the only real person on hear, i'm liverpool, and remember those rival days with forest, but cloughie was a genius, they all go on about mourino and fergie, best 5 managers ever, Shankly, Clough, Paisley, Revie and Jck Stein,
The FA were scared of Cloughie & it cost England, just like they appointed McLaren (no offence as he's an ex-Tiger) but he was 'nice' and wouldn't fall out with the suits.
im sorry with all this debate of who is the greatest manager in english football history i have failed to spot anyone mention the name of the one and only bob paisley. 9 years= 6 league titles, 3 european cups, 3 league cups, 1 uefa cup, and almost did the treble in 1977, i thank u!!!
its a shame he didnt take over the FA lock stock and barrel. we miss characters like him in the game and he was the biggest character of em all . old big head. a class act.
Its hard to say who the best manager is/was. Alex Ferguson has turned United into the biggest club in the world, without question. Clough won and retained the European cup with a limited team. Ferguson has shown a lot more loyalty than Clough by gracing his greatness on one club. if you define a successful manager by how well he does for a club then Fergie is undoubtedly the better of the two.
Fergie only has the amount of cash he has today because he made United this size. His treble winning team was built around local and other home grown talent.
You say Clough didn't have the cash but he made the first million pound signing which was massive at the time.
Fergie has shown massive loyalty and that's why he's been so successful.
Heres a good idea, why dont you fuck off and watch some Alex Ferguson videos instead, not come on here and start slagging off the great man himself. Fergie is a sneaky cheating fucking snake. And we all know your not from Manchester. Dickhead.
I didn't bring Fergie up i was joining in a conversation that somebody else brought up. Also if you read my comments properly i don't say Fergie is the better manager of the two and i certainly don't slag Clough off.
You obviously don't understand intelligent conversation, so here's a good idea, why don't you fuck off and watch some happy slapping vids or summat. Dickhead.
Utter class. Football is all the poorer without him. He was like Muhammad Ali because although he could certainly talk a lot, he backed up everything he said with actions and success. A brilliant man.
im a stoke fan but i can see that brian clough is legend. a very funny and witty man and winning the europen cup two times with forest shows what an amazing manager he was. he should definitely of got the england job.
Im a leeds fan and I thought he was a bit of a wanker of how he behaved towards the leeds players but he is so witty and you have to respect the man because of that great arrogance which was able to carry him to big heights
He could take an average player and get the best out of him by playing him to his strenghths, i think thats what set cloughie apart from other managers.
What's the smallest European city to have had 'ownership' of the European Cup?
Answer: Nottingham (twice).
Cloughie was a great manager because he won trophies with very little resources to play with, he unearthed so many gems from youth and grass roots football and got teams to play as good a style of football as you'll see anywhere in the World and he didn't let tactics rule his better instincts.
If Brian Clough had been a Brazilian, he'd be at the top Sugarloaf Mountain now.
im not a forest fan but how the game misses cloughie. he was a genuine larger than life character and fabulous manager. football is poorer without him. thanks for posting
How is it againts his views? Your obviously a stupid fanny licking bastard if you have nothing better to do than attempt to cut people down on YouTube. I have pity on your meaningless life

its a shame he didnt take over the FA lock stock and barrel. we miss characters like him in the game and he was the biggest character of em all . old big head. a class act.

he should of been england manager, but he wasn't a yes man.

I think Clough would have had his hands tied too much by the FA if he had got the job.

brian cloughs better than Al*x Fe*guson

Much the same manager really.

I agree dude! its hard to compare but there both greats i think Ferguson gets slag off to much, by the way im a forest fan & yes as a kid Mr
Clough got me into them.
rufusandburne 2 years ago
Its hard to say who the best manager is/was. Alex Ferguson has turned United into the biggest club in the world, without question. Clough won and retained the European cup with a limited team. Ferguson has shown a lot more loyalty than Clough by gracing his greatness on one club. if you define a successful manager by how well he does for a club then Fergie is undoubtedly the better of the two.
phil84mufc 2 years ago
Mmmm,Not sure about that.
Take inflation out of the equation and the way the game has evolved in terms of foreign signings...
Clough never had the cash Ferguson has had nor the huge amount of foreign talent at his disposal, not that he would have signed them anyway.
Only one winner...Clough,and he faced the press after a loss !
fireandrain1 2 years ago 2
Fergie only has the amount of cash he has today because he made United this size. His treble winning team was built around local and other home grown talent.
You say Clough didn't have the cash but he made the first million pound signing which was massive at the time.
Fergie has shown massive loyalty and that's why he's been so successful.

Heres a good idea, why dont you fuck off and watch some Alex Ferguson videos instead, not come on here and start slagging off the great man himself. Fergie is a sneaky cheating fucking snake. And we all know your not from Manchester. Dickhead.
mattyrm 2 years ago
I didn't bring Fergie up i was joining in a conversation that somebody else brought up. Also if you read my comments properly i don't say Fergie is the better manager of the two and i certainly don't slag Clough off.
You obviously don't understand intelligent conversation, so here's a good idea, why don't you fuck off and watch some happy slapping vids or summat. Dickhead.

Utter class. Football is all the poorer without him. He was like Muhammad Ali because although he could certainly talk a lot, he backed up everything he said with actions and success. A brilliant man.
FantomRaspberyBlower 2 years ago 3
The man was a god.
England would have won the World Cup had Cloughie been in charge. I do not doubt that for a second.

im a stoke fan but i can see that brian clough is legend. a very funny and witty man and winning the europen cup two times with forest shows what an amazing manager he was. he should definitely of got the england job.
jhwoasis93 3 years ago
Im a leeds fan and I thought he was a bit of a wanker of how he behaved towards the leeds players but he is so witty and you have to respect the man because of that great arrogance which was able to carry him to big heights
minceanator 3 years ago
Im a leeds fan too and how much do we suck now? You think of some of the bum teams we lost to this season. We are nothing without beckford.

What an England manager Clough would have been, With all due respect to Ron Greenwood, Clough was the man
mts1977 3 years ago
He could take an average player and get the best out of him by playing him to his strenghths, i think thats what set cloughie apart from other managers.
danny1374 3 years ago 5
Same quality that his former pupil Martin O'Neill has now. Although I'm not comparing the two.
RedHowlin 3 years ago 4
What's the smallest European city to have had 'ownership' of the European Cup?
Answer: Nottingham (twice).
Cloughie was a great manager because he won trophies with very little resources to play with, he unearthed so many gems from youth and grass roots football and got teams to play as good a style of football as you'll see anywhere in the World and he didn't let tactics rule his better instincts.
If Brian Clough had been a Brazilian, he'd be at the top Sugarloaf Mountain now.

I was thinking about setting up a website to try and help get Old Big 'Ed a long-deserved knighthood. He died not long after.
I miss him.
RepublicofAudioweb 3 years ago 2
If Alex F'ing Ferguson can get a knighthood, i think they fella deserves one!!

Cloughie wouldn't lower himself to appear in a party politcal braodcast like Fergie though.

im not a forest fan but how the game misses cloughie. he was a genuine larger than life character and fabulous manager. football is poorer without him. thanks for posting
