Dude. I know how everyone stands up for Verdi's Requiem because it isn't as good as Mozart's, but this takes the case. Far be it from me to call this a fair competition between the two Confutatis'. Mozart should be informed there is no challenge ahead.
The greatest bass of our time, and one of tbe greatest of any time. The man has a gorgeous voice and KNOWS HOW TO SING; the majority of opera singers today do not have a clue. .
Is Rene Pape gay? I dislike the whispering on the reprise. There is too much fabrication to it. Only singers who distrust the authority of their voice need to take refuge to this. The greatest Confutatis here on YouTube? The one with Ghiaurov and Karajan from Milan 1967.
Not just on YouTube, but the greatest Confutatis ever is with Ghiaurov and Karajan. And of course, it's performed by the greatest bass ever and the greatest conductor. Others look weak compared with Ghiaurov and Karajan's performance.
I've sung this piece and heard it sung by just about everyone else but I've never heard it done better than this. And it is not easy, let me tell you!
One of the most beautiful voices I have EVER heard live. I saw him as King Marke in Tristan und Isolde at the Met. He stole the show,Absolutely heartbreaking. Then I had the good fortune of hearing him sing the bass solo in beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the Boston Symphony conducted by james Levine......I'm looking forwardto his upcoming Wotan in the ring cycle at the met
A completely stunning voice!! comments likes radsvid gives away the ignorance of elderly men, stuck within the time warp of ancient interpretations. This is a sensitive, flawless performance with Pape bringing intelligence to a warm, beautiful voice.
I heard Pape recently in Berlin, as Gurnemanz in Parsifal, and it was one AWESOME sound, huge and beautiful. I wasn't around for Siepi or London, but I feel Pape must be in that league.
VERY GOOD performance!!!! Note the variety of word-painting by Pape, also the exemplary phrasing, aided by Pappano conducting at tempi which enabled Pape to phrase thusly, while also respecting Verdi's tempo markings.

@BINGFRYSRDUN Sorry... Mozart´requiem is nice and ok, beautiful.... but Verdi´s Requiem is simply SPEC-T-CU-LAR!

@ezayi that's weak, mate.

Ghiaurov and Siepe are superior since there are no affectations present. The crescendo was lost due to unsettled placement from being ingolata.

Beautiful--- stands with the greats like Tozzi (the BEST Requiem recording-- Bjorling, Price, Elias, Tozzi/ Fritz Reiner)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
this guy sucks ass. This music is way beyond him and his capabilities. It lack the mysticism that Ghiaurov and Siepie used to bring to it.
Rene Pape is a vulgar singer, he should go back to scream his opera.

Well done. My compliments

He is one of the greatest basses of our age, but I can't believe he smokes and he admits that he has no intention of quitting.

Similar to Caruso

You are correct. Teresa Stratas also smokes, unless she quit.

My gentle suggestion to you is just to listen to more singers
tagliavini 2 years ago
My gentle answer is that I have listened to a lot of them. And no one is like Ghiaurov, no one has his passion, his noble voice and his aura.
BBozhkilov 2 years ago
Siepi? Ramey? Chaliapin?
tagliavini 2 years ago
Listened to them. Trust me, Ghiaurov is the real "RE DI BASSI"

OK.You win!!

Haha, well, actually it's a personal taste, imo Ghiaurov is just on another level.

It's much better than Don Carlo.
One of the most in Rene.

For me, Ghiaurov + von Karajan are the standard. This is good indeed, but doesn't quite match.
Still 5/5 I guess.
