Does anyone else think there may have been more than one photo session for the front cover? I say this because while it is clear Ace has half make up in some shots, in many others he does not. I can see them airbrushing the one photo for the album cover, but many of the outtakes too?...and you are correct grotesqueforms, the girl on the back cover is not Lydia. I asked her myself at one of the NY Conventions.

@csm55555 Ace was involved in a car accident a day or 2 before the shoot and could only wear the makeup on half his face because he got cuts on the other side, so they superimposed the makeup on the album cover and un some of the out-takes as well. I thought this was common knowledge among KISS fans.

@romeokid69Yeah, I know about the accident, I just think time has warped some of the memories. There are many outtakes of the band posed similar to the cover and even the actual shot - they wouldn't take the time to superimpose all the outtakes. Plus, look at an actual pic of Ace with half the make up on, his outline comes almost all the way to his mouth, on the cover it does not. I think the photo shoots become a blur. Do a search for Hotter Than Hell photoshoot,see what ya think :)

The day before the photo shoot Ace was in a car accident (he was drunk and driving). Due to a facial injury he couldn't wear makeup on one side of his face. From his new book 'No Regrets".

@csm55555 the reason only half of ace's face was shot was because he was in a car accident and the doctor told him he couldn't wear makeup or he would risk getting an infection. Ace tells the story in his autobiography no regrets.

Excellent pics! I love rare B/W KISS photos. I now know why Ace had only 'half' his makeup on in some of those shots...interesting story behind it which Ace explains in his new book, "No Regrets" - a fantastic read by the way. I highly recommend it.

@LeMcCHarStar4ever There's a story behind that. Ace had just been in a car accident (I think) and messed up the side of his face. The doctors wouldn't let him put makep on it for a while which is why he only did the good half. It's KISSTORY look it up.

@MARSHOMEWORLD A quote of Norman Seeff for you: I had just come back from Japan and met one of the great Japanese artist, Tadanori Yokoo. I think the way Kiss were dressed and who they were suggested to me that Yokoo's work would be an ideal direction for them. As we went further, I thought "Why not put the title in Japanese as well?" I called in a brilliant designer, John Van Hamersveld, to do the design.
