I have one of Steve's instructional videos and he uses a cymbol stand.
You can also use a folding microphone stand.
I just bought a flange from Steve to fit the top of the microphone stand (I got my stand at Radio Shack). Once you have the flange you can attach your own base (like plywood) to it.
Steve uses the cymbol stand because it folds down into thirds and is more compact for traveling than a microphone stand.
