  • "I saw that it was not just because.. the electoral system in Berlin is fairer, but because they had ideas..."

My point is just that you could have great ideas that have the support of 100% of the people, and still lose every election with the Plurality Voting system, as long as voters don't believe you have a chance (because then they'll strategically vote for one of the major parties). I think it's good you're discussing policy, and I wish you luck. I just think the voting method is a wall.

  • I believe you underestimate the importance of the voting method. All the good ideas in the world are unlikely to help you without Score Voting or Approval Voting in your single-winner elections, or a proportional multi-winner election in your legislative branch.

  • @thebrokenladder

I don't think the party does underestimate the importance of voting methods, that is why the party supported AV and supports electoral reform now.

However, in the absence of change in that direction there isn't a lot a party can do other than convince voters on the issues, starting small and working up. That means contesting elections both local and nationally, persuading people that the party's ideas are worth voting for and actively making a difference.

  • @thebrokenladder I agree, but since we don't have it it would seem the only option is to give up.. The UK had a referendum on this not too long ago and it failed, maybe you could suggest where to go from there? Plus, we can have an impact locally, it just means that everything we do will be evolutionary not revolutionary, at least initially.

  • @ajehals I realize how implausible it is to try to fix the voting system for public elections right now. But the UK PP can make it a priority to hold their _internal_ elections via some advanced yet simple voting method like Score Voting or Approval Voting, the latter having already become the dominant paradigm with the German PP. This would continue to prove their efficacy and help one day bring them into public elections. And it would pick better leaders and policies for the party.

  • @thebrokenladder We do use a sensible voting method (specifically ERS97 STV ) for internal elections and have done since the party was set up, if that makes it any clearer.

  • @ajehals STV is pretty good for multi-winner elections (though worse in some significant ways than systems such as Reweighted Range Voting or Asset Voting). However, for SINGLE-winner elections, it is quite terrible. See these Bayesian Regret figures: wwwDOTelectologyDOTorgSLASHapproval-voting-vs-irv

  • Argh, somehow that link gets mangled with an "invisible" minus in the word "approval". If you just type over that part, or search the site for "approval voting vs irv" you'll find the page. Very detailed information.
