Our company is using this technology to replicate body parts (primarily spines and skulls) for pre-surgical planning (typically for scoliosis, kypohosis, and craniosynostosis cases). Our models have also been used in personal injury legal cases.

sure. i pay 950 dollars to rebuild my fucking fussball plastic player and a plastic wine glass that probaly gives me cancer because the plastic is toxic.
@rgbgdrunkenmaster 1. Therma-Plastic is non-toxic. 2. You can get the kit for less than $950, or just make it urself since its open-source. 3. Even if it were toxic, how could it give u cancer?
@rgbgdrunkenmaster I agree that a lot of the use-case examples they give of these hobbyist 3-D printers are pretty ridiculous from a practical standpoint. I think maybe they're stretching a bit, trying to find ways the machine can be useful to people.
I build models, so having a machine that can print plastic parts (even if they have a rough surface, so long as the shapes are accurate) could be very useful to me. But maybe I'll just try shapeways for a while before building a machine.
all you people who are sayin ooh im bying this are a bunch of idiots you people out there who have a usual printers no how much they cost to rum imagin how much this will cost you to run waste of save up your money by a guitar or summin get hooby dont waste your money on this shit
@bassnvideogames Well, the ABS runs $50 .00 US for 5 lbs. of line, Black is more expensive, but 5 pounds of abs lasts you for about a month of constant printing. The rough appearance is due to the print head resolution, the guys at Makerbot used the faster but less accurate pulley system on the x and y rather than the screw thread adjustment rods on the z axis. As someone who's worked with CNCs i can tell you that Makerbot has plenty good resolution, especially for a tenth the cost.
@MrHeadcrab Also, since you can take one of these and hook a dremel to it and turn it into a classic subtractive CNC, you can do a lot more than just make neat little crap, and since the boards are open, you can scale it as big as you want.
Desktop manufacturing is in it's infancy, a little support would be nice. Even if you personally don't see a use, it isn't a waste. Now, unless you personally have built anything as groundbreaking as this, I'd suggest you check your attitude at the door.
Its cool but its only around 10cm X 10cm which is okay for small bits like making gears and that but it looks like it would take hell long to print something
They need to improve the output first, it puts out jagged crap; nothing like the other 3D printers on the market. Spend an extra $1500 and get a professionally made 3D printer which prints good models not jagged crap.
@chrisdude1001: Apart from assuming that it will be made for your sole personal use, you could also take a look in the video at 01:42 and see that the platform which moves the materialized 3D object, actually has a pretty happy face :)
I'd like to see places like Lowes and Home Depot offer network-based 3D printing. Similar to printing photos at your local Walgreens, this would eliminate the cost of purchasing a device for occasional use.
Nothing new about 3D printers. been on the market for years. amazing how people think this stuff is new, what hole have you guys been in.
The big Stereoscopic 3d fluff. nothing new.. S3D gaming and eyeware has been aroung for ages, even back on the commodore64. i guess those were the things that made being a nerd so fun. everyone else was in the dark.
@xevious2501 There is a bit of a difference between wearing a pair of glasses for a 3-D effect and something that reproduces a 3-D solid object. Maybe.
This is the same technology used in manufacturing companies to make hundreds of items per minute, Someone just scaled down some engineers assembly line machine and renamed it.
If you scale down in manufacturing plant machine that makes tons of items per min, then you could say it's a 3D printer.
I like how videos like this get people excited about the makerbot. I've been wanting and excited about these for about half a year now. Oh the things I would make...I would probably start printing other RepRaps.
Holy shit what are the "prints" made of??? Must cost a buttload to maintain payment for once you buy the hardware... probably why the thing is so cheap in the first place; they profit from selling the "ink"
Once such 3D printer become more widespread just like currently the inkjet & laser printers, there will be profound changes in global production mode. The difficult part is getting the proper mechanical parts.
I think this will become a crucial tool for new companies to start in home garages. You can make parts for cars or anything but this also opens the door for people to build entirely new equipment any way they want it. For instance, I could make new bolts for my paintball gun.
