it was a fort. then merchants came and build shacks in it. then more civilians and adventurers moved there. with time it became a town! later, no doubt, Saxon raiders hit the place. then later Vikings hit the place, reducing it even further. over the centuries local farmers finished off the remaining building materials. until all you have left is bits of foundation.
Why dig up Roman ruins? To get to the good Iron Age stuff underneath! ;-)
