My fave bands were Floyd and Purple but when I hear DT covers they leave me cold, I find their covers very "sterile" - note perfect but "sterile" - something missing, the body and soul that was there when Floyd and Purple created them originally. Thats been said by many on YTube and I personally agree with them. In the end its all personal taste and personal preference that's all.

Yes, I agree that their covers are not nearly as good as they are compared to Pink Floyd and Deep Purple, but when do you see a band do a better cover of the original? Its all been done before: by Yes, Floyd, Purple. Yes had Tales of Topgraphic Oceans 1973 (yep 35 YEARS AGO!!!) a double album consisting of only 4 tracks - one per side of LP. Purple: check out the immortal Made In Japan, and even early Genesis were a prog rock band early 70's with Peter Gabriel on vocals with epic tracks such as Supper's Ready from 1972 album Foxtrot and other prog rock epics such as Music Box from 1971 album Nursery Cryme. Long tracks its all been done before - LONG before!

Dream Theater has a LOT of songs longer than 2112. Octavarium is another song by them that's longer than this one. Their average songs are about 11-13 minutes longs, with many longs ones going to about 16 or 17 minutes. But 2112 is pretty long :P.
