The city you came to near the end wasn't very 1940's but exciting to reach as it was a gruelling game - no lives, you crashed & that was it. My favourite was shooting vehicles crossing bridges, particularly ambulances! Das eich nich mine krumenwagen
I loved Blue Max! I got pretty far into the game. IIRC in later levels you fly through cities but it was difficult to navigate. You had to fly as high as you could or else or would slam into the high rise buildings.
Someone needs to upload footage of the later levels. I want to see the end of the game! lol
This is the first time I've seen this since 1986! My friend had it on his computer, and it was always my favorite game. For some reason, I could never land, so I'd run out of fuel.
A classic game, one of my top ten Atari 8-bit favorites of all time. As with many Synapse games of the day, they knew how to utilize many of the great features of the Atari. The graphics, sound and music here are tops.
Although you just just one pilot, if you played it strategically (okay, sometimes it was the luck of the draw), completing the game was relatively easy.
It still has a very high replay value today for me. My favorite part is the final bombing run as it took exact timing.
Ahead of its time & very addictive, especially as you only had one life. I remember that if you bombed too harshly, an enemy plane would get you while you refuelled, & my favourite bit apart entering the city was to strafe the vehicles going over bridges. Sometimes it was an ambulance!
One of my favorite Atari 800 games of all-time! Top 5 - 5) All Infocom text adventures, 4) Blue Max, 3) Star Raiders, 2) Ultima III, and 1) Legionnaire.
Thanks for posting this! Great memories for me too. This game went pretty far, too. Also Blue Max 2001 was also good. IIRC At first bm2001 seemed worse but farther on it showed to be a worthy successor.
Sweet! I always got suckered into bombing things right and left and usually wound up flying straight into a factory. Man, I miss playing games with a proper joystick.
Blue Max would be one of my top ten games written for the Atari 8-bit. The graphics/sound were great and game play very smooth and had a high replay value. Didn't like the "2001" follow-up. The game play was bad and not as intuitive.
The trick to avoid being bombed by enemy planes when you're on the runway is to begin landing about halfway before the hangar appears. They won't touch you. If you land too late, you won't have enough take-off space. Takes some practice, but that's the key.
This Game was really cool
When you got to the City you had to bomb the coloured buildings in the middle.
If you did you would then go on to land and win the game.
This game has a couple of bugs though.
The first enemy plane that flew past just before you take off, you can't shoot down,
If you get over 1000 points before you first landing you always got bombed.
And the big one. Try bombing your own Hanger and watch the game crash.
Apart from that, all done in a computer with 64k of ram.

I remember the game would screw up if you bombed the building next to the refueling runway. Colors would go all crazy and stuff.

Anyone have an idea where I can buy this? Is it available in a joystick, like some commodore games are?
