I'm about 95% for certain that I saw this guy play pick up basketball on the University of Texas campus in the late 90s. I have no way of finding out, but I can't imagine there are too many little Japanese dudes out there who a) would have the balls to step on a predominately black court with some of the best/tallest players there at the time(including athletes from the UT football and basketball teams) and b)had the talent to embarrass most of them with his skills. I will never forget that day
@glimmertwin1977 Yes, Tabuse is only 5-8 and the smallest even among Japanese nationals. But he has quickness, skill, speed, passing, shooting, experience and all things except size and power. If 6ft Japanese guards play in the States, they can't play in the NBA without question. Now 6-3 Ryota Sakurai is the most athletic Japanese player, but even he can't play like Tabuse. If you say Tabuse sucks because of his size only, you don't know basketball.
@toki1221 - I didn't say he sucks because of his size - I was completely amazed by him!
....but it's naive to think his size didn't hurt his professional career. He likely would have been a career NBA starter had he been 6'3". Unfortunately, when your playing the world's best, those types of differences in physical size are amplified because everyone has quickness, skill, speed, passing, shooting, etc. ...but back to point - Tabuse is an amazingly gifted player.
@toki1221 He doesn't have the athleticism of Nate Robinson who is about the same size. He's not in the NBA because size means a lot. Even now, Nate Robinson has been set as third string point guard for the thunder and he was third string for the Celtics too. It's just hard to be successful when you're small.
@GRiMxSG Well, you simply can't compare Yuta Tabuse with Nate Robinson only because of size. Yuta Tabuse is Asian and Nate Robinson is black and of course, Robinson has much more athleticism like a super blockshot against Yao Ming. Also, Yuta Tabuse comes from Japan of minor basketball background unlike Nate Robinson from the States of basketball motherland. I checked Asian Games and I think Yuta Tabuse is still the special among Asian PG and deserves to try in the NBA again.
@toki1221 Well, that's why he doesn't play in the NBA. It's as simple as that. He's a PG, he has to be compared to other PG's in the league. It doesn't matter where he's come from, because all that matters is his skills. Sure, he's special among Asian PG, but like you said Asia isn't known for basketball, especially Japan. I like Yuta Tabuse, but he won't be able to succeed in the NBA.
@GRiMxSG I've never said Yuta Tabuse could be succeed in the NBA. I just say he still deserves to try in the NBA. Asian have their own style and blacks too. As for athleticism, Asian can't run like Bolt, but Japan won bronze at relay in Beijing and why? Cuz we didn't lose a baton. Yes, concentration is a strong point of Japanese. As you know, NBA depends on center from the world nowaday. But if Japan sends 7ft center, they can't play. Even Yi Jianlian, the most athletic Asian big man not enough.
@toki1221 Well, I see your point and I actually agree with you. But if you think about it, he does bring a lot of risks as do many foreign players. Size means a lot, like in the NBA draft this year, Isiaih Thomas got picked 60th (dead last) even though he played great, but because he's 5'9" and it's harder to be of much use in the NBA, unless you are ridiculously crafty or athletic.
@GRiMxSG Yes, and that's why I hope not only Yuta Tabuse but also the other Japanese promising young guns try in the NBA. But challenge is a big risk as you say. First of all, you have to be absent from Japanese nationals. Here in Japan, national team is so important because if they suck, no one come to see domestic games. NBA is the top stage all bball players hope and all fans hope to watch our players play there, but Japan has to make a position in the world before NBA...
@GRiMxSG Therefore, we should not compare or copy with blacks. We should improve our own style. I've ever read the airticle of NBA columnist and it said Japanese are diligent and if they have good shooting outside, they can make it constantly like Ichiro. I agree with it and even 6ft Japanese can play enough if we have good shooters. For example, Takehiko Orimo of 6-3 was Japanese legend shooter and played in the summer league and likely to get a contract, but failed overall because of injury...
@toki1221 I'm not saying anything about Japanese people. The article isn't that right, in my opinion. It's not just applicable with Japanese, but all players. Playing like that would never make you anything more than a spot up shooter that comes off the bench.
He's a good player... in japan. A lot of good players in other countries are just not cut for the NBA. You look at international all-stars: Nowitzki, Nash, Ginobili, Gasol, etc, they could carry teams to the playoffs.
@gyromancy2 im not impress at all..... there are lot of great players who played better than him and didn't make it to the NBA... and for me yuta .. or whatever his name is... his not good for me... , PERIOD.
@musictiger86 This guy clearly has the talent to put up the same numbers & stats as Steve Nash and Damon Stoudamire, and they know it!! Maybe the American scouts are still bitter about Pearl Harbor, which is sad if they are. I can't think of any other reason.
i dunno...im not an expert or anything...but tabuse looks like the only decent player here...i mean maybe this video doesnt show the other guys score or cut or whatever...lol...
i think its more based on cultural and environmental surroundings.. yuta is good, but you won't find too many like him anytime soon. i sure don't see many japanese playing basketball... i think besides baseball, as a major sport, they don't put much into sports as other countries do...points out majority, but there are pro 's in other sports from jpn.
I liked the way Tabuse played, he was lightening quick with sharp passes...but i don't think many teams will give him a break because of his height, that is what Kiki said when he cut him from Denver. It is unfair I know because there are short players like Nate, and earl boykins. I would like to see tabuse again.
I think he'll find a way back in, but if he's going to get paid somewhere else why bother. Earl Boykins is also no where to be found...probably in the euro league getting paid more money then he would have earned in the NBA.

JSmaals u stupid fucking cunt? ahev u ever played in NBA? stupid asshole even the worst player in the NBA is better than you! so stop underestimating players nerd!
J smaals you saying asian players are garbage? who the fuck are you to make such comment, dont sit on your ass and make gay ass comment when you dont know shit.
None of that matters, because.... As a whole, Asian basketball players are garbage, just face the truth and stop bickering over d-league players who don't count...
he's pretty quick, but going back to what a lot of oher people have said- he's too small. he might be the same height as nate robinson, but he definitely lacks the muscle. siete suerte- the only one from the PI that has ever been good enough to at least play for an nba preseason team was Johnny A. in his prime. Jimmy Alapag would get waxed out there easily.
Actually, the Chinese probably are right now the best in Asia. They have Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian that are playing well in the NBA, and handful more that have played in the NBA. There was one Korean, Ha-Seung Jin that didn't play much. Then there's one coming, Jin Soo Kim, and he is already rated pretty high and he's only a junior in High school. Then here's Yuta, the first and so far only Japanese basketball player to play in the NBA. No Filipinos yet, oh well.
Ha Seung Jin came back to South Korea soon, but Yuta Tabuse still plays in the NBDL and is challenging to the NBA again. Needless to say, Yuta Tabuse is superior to Ha Seung Jin.
@yokozuna222 At basketball? Umm...No. I'm not Asian so I don't have a nationalistic bias. And I say China owns the rest of Asia at basketball. Hugely due to the success of Yao Ming. He is a beast. One of the best big men the league has ever seen. Until someone tops him, China is number one. PS if he wasn't injured all the time he'd be a hall of fame caliber player. Not that he can help it, his body is just extremely injury prone.
that they are not part of europes elite like spain or greece is totally true but come on... european b team? no way^^ and apart from that germany played china some month ago in exhibition for the european cup and the chinese were able to stay close during that match... so stop talking about stuff that you arent knowing a lot about :P
to come back to what gamecubesupreme and the others were talking about... if slovenia is not a good european team i think you should watch european basketball from time to time :D they are able to keep up with teams like italy or germany ;)
Tabuse was a gimmick. He couldn't handle Division 1 NCAA and was brought in as a gimmick during training camp. He never had the shot or the overall floor leadership to be seriously viable as an NBA player. I watched him play in Japan many times- and while I always liked him he just wasn't good enough. No shame in that- just ask Khalid-El Amin or God Shammgod or Shea Seals.
the average height of japanese national team is 195cm and he can't play even in japanese national team. incidentally, japanese tallest player is toru sugatani of 220cm.
Tha Philippine Team can beat all of your team!! the philippines is the only asian country who wins 3rd in world basketball championship in 1920 plus... and also they captured 4th in olympics!!
i'd really like to see how Philpines would do in the upcoming Asian BBall tourney. Jones Cup was a joke ok?? Japan didnt send out its national team, it was more like their college all star team. China didnt even bother playing.
tabuse prefers the nba to japanese nt and we need not him either. here's japanese 5: shinsuke kashiwagi of 183cm, ryota sakurai of 194cm, joji takeuchi of 205cm, kosuke takeuchi of 205cm and fumihiko aono of 210cm. we will qualify for the olympics this time.
you are fucking retard. european b team can beat asian team by 30+??? so what was that? china beat slovenia and lebanon beat france in the fiba??? that's all the battle between a team!!!
Slovenia is a joke in Europe and China won with a miracle 3 pointer. Lebanon beating France was a freak upset, but France didn't had a good team in the FIBA Tournament. If Japan were to go up against teams like Spain or Italy, they would have a hard time keeping it within 20;
In Europe, the Top Tier teams would be Lithuania, Italy, Serbia & Montenegro (although they're two countries now) and Greece.
Then you have teams like Spain (they're very good, but for some reason they seem to choke a lot, other than the FIBA Championship this year) Croatia, Poland, Russia and France.
They can all destroy teams from Asia, but they don't want to embarrass their opponents.
Did you even know the team that S&M sent to Olympics in 2004? If you thought the USA had a bad "Dream Team," S&M was far worse. I think they lacked 4 of their regular starters and a whole bunch of regulars said no to Athens. It was basically S&M's second-team that competed in 2004.
exusing is asian culture? we japanese don't even if we want cuz it is samurai. u are only a mounth and can't progress to the next. exuse forever, blah, blah, blah, etc.
You brought in irrelevant information that had nothing to do with anything. Why would it be considered an "excuse" if I'm not even from SCG. I respect Japanese people cause a lot of my friends are Japanese, but misguided morons like you who hitch on the success of your fellow countrymen and then proceed to do nothing but tarnish the reputation they set up for the rest of the country is simply disgusting. You clearly don't know the "way of the samurai" even if you are Japanese.
excusing isn't Asian culture. It's Japanese. Just ask the comfort women, old Korean people, people from the Philippines, the Ainu, the bunrakumin, the homeless people and my man Mori (a former PM) Tell me Goemon80, what, pray tell does, "sangokujin" mean? What is "nihonjinron"? So what's your excuse?
no, asian except japanese make an excuse soon and that's why asia except japan is still poor. it's caused by asian typical sense. asian keep your faces, so you are too proud to accept the truth. you show off soon to keep your faces and don't face the truth.
NBA didn't temoporarily reject him for his size. earl boykins is shorter but he's fine. I think NBA just expects him to play better. He's currently in NBDL.
yea but he got waived so many times it's just sad. Go google it and you'll see. I think it is a matter of size. Just think how he will defend taller players even like nash in a playoff game.
maybe soccer they like. especially koreans. some dont like basketball and koreans here in my hometown nobody plays basketball. only soccer and badminton. maybe basketball is destined for black people.
Proportionately Canada is 1/4 the population of Japan. So realistically, shouldn't we see at least oh...I don't know 20 Japanese players instead of none? Can you name one Japanese athlete who is playing a major professional sport outside of Japan excluding baseball? Don't even try saying the name of a soccer player (players acquired to sell jerseys and not play don't count)
lol what a retard. basketball isn't as ingrained in japanese culture than in the americas. what's next, you're going to ask why africa doesn't have any olympic ice skaters based on some other dumb population reference? LOL retard.
I think your comparison between Japanese basketball players and Africa not having ice skaters clearly demonstrates who the "retard" is. After all, Japan does have gyms, does have tons of youth basketball leagues, does have a corporate league where there are tons of former NCAA players. But, I'm sure you've been to Japan. In fact, I'm sure you've lived there and aren't a 12 year old sitting in front of a computer- so you know all that. You illiterate American retard.
lolol so are you saying that the percentage of japanese youth who decide to play basketball seriosuly is equal or even comparable to that in the USA? seriously just answer that question. LOL
u are fucking chink canadian, right? don't be racist! tabuse is the special short even in japanese national team and our best guard is ryota sakurai of 194cm. we respect tabuse cuz he challenge to the nba such size, don't u think so???
listen I'm Canadian, but shut the fuck up, why are you so racist man? We are against the chinese , the people who are taking over the country, not the Japanese loser,

None of that matters, because.... As a whole, Asian basketball players are garbage, just face the truth and stop bickering over d-league players who don't count...

yuta tabuse is 5'9 tall
garrettx32 3 years ago 2
he's pretty quick, but going back to what a lot of oher people have said- he's too small. he might be the same height as nate robinson, but he definitely lacks the muscle. siete suerte- the only one from the PI that has ever been good enough to at least play for an nba preseason team was Johnny A. in his prime. Jimmy Alapag would get waxed out there easily.
esampal 4 years ago
Actually, the Chinese probably are right now the best in Asia. They have Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian that are playing well in the NBA, and handful more that have played in the NBA. There was one Korean, Ha-Seung Jin that didn't play much. Then there's one coming, Jin Soo Kim, and he is already rated pretty high and he's only a junior in High school. Then here's Yuta, the first and so far only Japanese basketball player to play in the NBA. No Filipinos yet, oh well.
Jijjin 4 years ago

Dotti88 4 years ago
to come back to what gamecubesupreme and the others were talking about... if slovenia is not a good european team i think you should watch european basketball from time to time :D they are able to keep up with teams like italy or germany ;)

Goemon80 4 years ago
You guys can barely make it out of Asia...any second-tier team from Europe can beat the best Asian team by 30+.
Gamecubesupreme 4 years ago
you are fucking retard. european b team can beat asian team by 30+??? so what was that? china beat slovenia and lebanon beat france in the fiba??? that's all the battle between a team!!!
Goemon80 4 years ago
Slovenia is a joke in Europe and China won with a miracle 3 pointer. Lebanon beating France was a freak upset, but France didn't had a good team in the FIBA Tournament. If Japan were to go up against teams like Spain or Italy, they would have a hard time keeping it within 20;
Gamecubesupreme 4 years ago
>any second-tier team from Europe can beat the best Asian team by 30+. read again. u are just excusing.
Goemon80 4 years ago
"just excusing?" WTF are you talking about.
Gamecubesupreme 4 years ago
china beat yugoslavia in the olympics athens and yugoslavia is equivalent with scg, so top tier team.
Goemon80 4 years ago
Did you even know the team that S&M sent to Olympics in 2004? If you thought the USA had a bad "Dream Team," S&M was far worse. I think they lacked 4 of their regular starters and a whole bunch of regulars said no to Athens. It was basically S&M's second-team that competed in 2004.
Gamecubesupreme 4 years ago
exusing is asian culture? we japanese don't even if we want cuz it is samurai. u are only a mounth and can't progress to the next. exuse forever, blah, blah, blah, etc.
Goemon80 4 years ago
You brought in irrelevant information that had nothing to do with anything. Why would it be considered an "excuse" if I'm not even from SCG. I respect Japanese people cause a lot of my friends are Japanese, but misguided morons like you who hitch on the success of your fellow countrymen and then proceed to do nothing but tarnish the reputation they set up for the rest of the country is simply disgusting. You clearly don't know the "way of the samurai" even if you are Japanese.
Gamecubesupreme 4 years ago
excusing isn't Asian culture. So what's your excuse?
ahab75 4 years ago
no, asian except japanese make an excuse soon and that's why asia except japan is still poor. it's caused by asian typical sense. asian keep your faces, so you are too proud to accept the truth. you show off soon to keep your faces and don't face the truth.

NBA didn't temoporarily reject him for his size. earl boykins is shorter but he's fine. I think NBA just expects him to play better. He's currently in NBDL.
ShiaMisha 4 years ago
yea but he got waived so many times it's just sad. Go google it and you'll see. I think it is a matter of size. Just think how he will defend taller players even like nash in a playoff game.

The japs are not really into basket ball i think.
maybe soccer they like. especially koreans. some dont like basketball and koreans here in my hometown nobody plays basketball. only soccer and badminton. maybe basketball is destined for black people.

airfans2006 4 years ago
how many players are there in the nba? can you name at least like 20 players that are from canada?
yakultrocks 4 years ago
Proportionately Canada is 1/4 the population of Japan. So realistically, shouldn't we see at least oh...I don't know 20 Japanese players instead of none? Can you name one Japanese athlete who is playing a major professional sport outside of Japan excluding baseball? Don't even try saying the name of a soccer player (players acquired to sell jerseys and not play don't count)
ahab75 4 years ago
lol what a retard. basketball isn't as ingrained in japanese culture than in the americas. what's next, you're going to ask why africa doesn't have any olympic ice skaters based on some other dumb population reference? LOL retard.
xtxoxpxd 4 years ago 3
I think your comparison between Japanese basketball players and Africa not having ice skaters clearly demonstrates who the "retard" is. After all, Japan does have gyms, does have tons of youth basketball leagues, does have a corporate league where there are tons of former NCAA players. But, I'm sure you've been to Japan. In fact, I'm sure you've lived there and aren't a 12 year old sitting in front of a computer- so you know all that. You illiterate American retard.
ahab75 4 years ago
lolol so are you saying that the percentage of japanese youth who decide to play basketball seriosuly is equal or even comparable to that in the USA? seriously just answer that question. LOL

japaneses play baseball and soccer
and they are not really into sports than other countries,,, if they are fonda playin sports i bet japan would have great team sports
