It makes sense for Guile to be the main character, because his story (and Chun Li's) fit this type of show better. His thing is that he wants to take down Shadaloo. Ryu's thing is that he goes around fighting and finding stronger opponents . . . for some reason. Ryu's story might work for a Japanese battle anime, but Guile's works better for a US good vs evil show.
@Laveticus It was never great, but Street Fighter was never great in terms of story anyway. I've got a soft spot for it because I watched it as a kid.
Of course Guile gets top billing. When you have a theme like that, a story that's FOR AMERICA, and a damn hairdo like that, you get whatever the fuck you want.
i like the fact that Guile is the main character. Ryu and Ken are like the "Wolverine" of this street fighter. he is not the main character, but is the one people mostly look at. they are caught in the middle lol XD
I only remember one episode but was sick Bison and Guile are trapped on a island with Akuma and needed to work together to beat him. Street Fighting ensued.
Why is Zangiev listed as one of the bad guys? By the time the Street Fighter video game came out, the Russians were supposed to be our friends and all that.
Just like in the Jean Claude Van Dame movie, Guile is the main character, and Ryu and Ken are just side characters. And of course, Ryu's name is incorrectly pronounced as well.
i think that was the idea. they wanted one of the american characters to be the leader. balrog was a bad guy and they probably thought that ken wouldn't have been a good one so..
What's really funny, is "Bison" is actually named "vega", and the names got screwed up coming overseas. 'Balrog' is actually 'Vega', etc. "Bison", was supposed to be Balrog's name: "Mike Bison", a shot at Iron Mike.
@kaihedgie Actually, given Ryu's dedication to the fight, the honor code he lives by, and his status as the main character and central figure to most of the real SF story (not this silly cartoon), Ryu's more of a leader and role model for street fighters than Guile, lol.
They made Guile the leader in this show because he's American. Just like in the first movie. And just like the movie, this show was completely retarded, LMAO
@OmegaNitro More of this "because he's American" nonsense. You do realize that Defenders of the Realm has a Chinese main hero, right?
Those are pretty transparent reasons. Ryu is more of a street fighter who keeps getting shoehorned into plots that really don't concern him and he's more worried about the next fight.
Guile on the other hand, is a soldier, a lieutenant, no less. He's a lot more qualified to lead and organize a team than someone who doesn't know what to do other than fight
@OmegaNitro So because he has an "honor code" and because he's the main character of the series, that means he should be leader? That's like saying Ragna should be the leader in a hypothetical series just because he's the main character even though he doesn't even have the credentials to lead anything
@OmegaNitro So why in the world would a street fighter who goes around beating up other people should have more authority/command over someone who actually commands soldiers in the battlefield? Because he's the main character?
Sure, let's give Hulk command of the Avengers while we're at it
@kaihedgie Technically, The story of Street Fighter shouldn't have a "team" at all. They shoehorned the entire cast into a G.I. Joe-esque "good guys vs. bad guys" scenario and made Guile the leader to appeal to their target demographic of American children. The cast in Street Fighter are supposed to be fighters, not soldiers.
In that sense, yes, Ryu is more qualified to be the central character in the series, and the character the rest of the cast take their cue from. And guess what? He is.
@OmegaNitro Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and the Street Fighter IV OVA both acknowledge that "Street Fighters" is an established team. There shouldn't really be coincedence why a wanderer, a reporter, a husband and a soldier keep meeting in the same place. The whole GI Joe thing makes sense because Street Fighter does revolve around global conflict. Since the actual story back then wasn't developed enough (and the fact that the current story is a mess as it is) pretty much begged for liberty of changes
@kaihedgie Get your facts straight. MvC3 is not canon to the SF storyline. The SFIV OVA wasn't an official team, it was Guile, Chun-Li, and Cammy (the three that cooperate to stop Shadowloo and co.) investigating S.I.N., and discovering that S.I.N. is interested in Ryu (much like Bison before). Ken and Eliza are involved because Ken is Ryu's best friend, and Sakura is involved due to the ambiguous idol/role model/friend/love interest relationship they have. Oh, and they're all Ryu's friends.
@OmegaNitro I'm well aware MVC3 is not canon, but this is word from Capcom themselves.
Ahem, no he's not. Or have you forgotten about Oro already or even Gen.
Bison also gets killed by Akuma and yet he doesn't go searching out for him, which again proves my point that there are other people the villains should be watching out for but don't because the fans won't recognize it's Street Fighter unless Ryu is in the spotlight
@OmegaNitro I also like how you blame America as if they're the only ones who do this nationality thing for their demographic reasons even though Japan has done the exact same thing (ex: Powerpuff Girls)
@kaihedgie I said 'potentially'. Not actually. Oro is the strongest character in the series. He takes Ryu as his apprentice in Third Strike because he realizes Ryu's potential to become as strong as him or stronger. And yes, that means potentially stronger than Akuma as well.
Bison can't BEAT Akuma. He wants to take Ryu over so that he can be stronger than Akuma.
And I never said that America was the only one who did that. The SF cartoon is just an example of an American studio doing it.
@kaihedgie And if you don't think that writers change the source material to suit their target demographic (which means focusing on Guile because he's the American Hero), you're delusional. Your Avengers analogy would only work if the cast of SF was a squad like the Avengers. They aren't supposed to be. Guile and Chun-Li cooperate for the sake of justice (revenge, really). That's about the closest it gets. Ryu has many more connections with more central figures, and more look up to him.
@OmegaNitro You do realize that America's population is diverse with nationality, right? People from all shades live there and throughout the course of the series, I never even saw the American flag getting shoved into every heroic-looking scene. The whole racial demographic argument falls flat anyway. Even if it was the case, Capcom does have a thing for America since some of its most popular characters are American or at least western-inspired, and I'm not just talking about Ken either
@OmegaNitro Guile and Chun-Li are actively fighting against the bad guys while Ryu wanders aimlessly looking for the next person to beat up. That's his whole character and it's never gone anywhere in the past decade. Last I check, there were more capable, stronger fighters out there than Ryu that the villains could focus on. Hell, the Street Fighter II anime movie acknowledges this by making Ken the target instead of Ryu. Ken actually has a goal to fight towards
@kaihedgie Wrong again. Ryu is potentially the strongest fighter in the series, and his goal is to realize that without giving in to the power of Satsui no Hadou that Akuma embraces. In that sense, he has a much clearer goal than Ken, who loves fighting and competing with Ryu, but struggles to balance that and taking care of his family.
In Street Fighter Alpha 3, Bison makes clear that his aim is to make Ryu his new host body, due to his incredible potential, and his affinity to Satsui no Hadou
@OmegaNitro He fights for his family and for the good fight as well. So do Chun-Li and Guile. They actually have legitimate motivations to keep on fighting. You could say that Ryu fights for his friends too, but that's really hard to tell at times and it seems like most of the time he could care less. All he basically cares about is beating people up and none of the movies or games ever solve this stagnant problem of his. Hell, even Akuma has a reason to fight, and that's pretty sad
@kaihedgie Why do you keep talking about Ryu's goals when it's clear you don't understand them at all? He fights to become the strongest. Not to beat people up, but to master his discipline. He never indiscriminately beats up people, he's simply always searching for a greater challenge. He's the stereotypical "true martial artist" and it's never "solved" because it doesn't need to be. it's the point of his character. And the rest of the cast respects him for it.
@OmegaNitro It's not exactly the sort of goal that you can incorporate into a television show without quickly getting a 'samey' feel however
Pokemon had the 'become the best' premise and pretty much every episode of that is a copy-paste of any other episode, it's a very difficult premise to keep mixing up every episode
And Guile IS qualified to be a leader, he's been trained in the military which means he by default outranks a cop like Chun-Li
You know, its only the overall cheese level that is a problem for me.
Suppose it helps that I like G.I. Joe. Otherwise for an ongoing cartoon, especially done to 90's US standards, the basic premise (G.I. Joe meets Street Fighter) makes as much sense as the "Ryu wanders and conveniently encounters everyone, and twice as conveniently all the important players show up for the finale!" we otherwise see. ;)
Well at least this show got one thing right, they finally give the characters their special moves but since this show was canon to the Jean Claude Van-Dammed movie, it still bothers me why Balrog is now part of Shadaloo when in the movie he was supposed to be a good guy with E. Honda and Chun-Li. Also why did Zangief rejoin Shadaloo when he already switch side after the movie?
I have no idea what I saw in this cartoon. I guess being a die-hard SF fan, I was just glad I could watch the on Saturdays... until I got older and found the Street Fighter II V series.
@dmorley100 it kinda followed the storyline of the street fighter live action movie...it was overall terrible but had a few good episodes...a better series was street fighter 2 V
I like how the narrator chose to emphasis certain 'interesting' words in the first 15 seconds: "Colonel William Guile, one of the GREATEST martial artist in the world travel the global tournament circuit, using it to conceal HIS top secret mission as LEADER of an elite group on fighters, known only by their code name: STREET FIGHTER"
....and then introduces Blanka and Chun-Li and pretty much says "SCREW THE REST!"

captainduaeaeaugh 6 months ago
LOL!!! He said "discipline"!!!
About an action team featuring Ken!!!
This is one misinformed narrator :P
Also...until this very moment i wasn't really into Chun-li.
But now...holy mother of all @#%$%@$% b*lls!!! she is the reason i want to watch the show!!! :-O
Wait! i just noticed!!! Is Cammy with the good guys??? NOOOO!!! I like her evilness XD (or rather IT'S evil functions. she's a robot, you see.)
sorry for writing too much, it's the exitement of finding the video.
DarkJeff 6 months ago
Well at least this show got one thing right, they finally give the characters their special moves but since this show was canon to the Jean Claude Van-Dammed movie, it still bothers me why Balrog is now part of Shadaloo when in the movie he was supposed to be a good guy with E. Honda and Chun-Li. Also why did Zangief rejoin Shadaloo when he already switch side after the movie?
blueswan1984 6 months ago
god this shit is soo bad.... i like how ryu and ken are barely shown or mentioned lol.

I have no idea what I saw in this cartoon. I guess being a die-hard SF fan, I was just glad I could watch the on Saturdays... until I got older and found the Street Fighter II V series.

ZeroX003 6 months ago 27
@ZeroX003
They weren't main characters in the movie either so.
ZioIsPwnzor 6 months ago
@ZeroX003 That's because they are side characters for some reason in this version...and I think treasure hunters for some reason?
gatoneko 5 months ago
@ZeroX003 yeah how can you not mention ryu and ken but chun li is still thick til this day her legs are dangerous in more ways than one.

iamthepkmmaster 7 months ago
I like how the narrator chose to emphasis certain 'interesting' words in the first 15 seconds: "Colonel William Guile, one of the GREATEST martial artist in the world travel the global tournament circuit, using it to conceal HIS top secret mission as LEADER of an elite group on fighters, known only by their code name: STREET FIGHTER"
....and then introduces Blanka and Chun-Li and pretty much says "SCREW THE REST!"
