this is a great movie and my dad agrees considering the plot denies nerds like me from the satisfaction of nagging the producers on the many plot hole errors due to the fact that it is an alternate universe :)
The people who hate the new movie are just fans of TOS. But others like me never liked or saw TOS. The 60's portrayal of arrogant and unnerving men like Kirk as great guys is obsolete today. In this movie he is seen as an emotional crippled asshole whom no one likes. He even must be saved almost in every situation by others like Sulu. The other characters got also a modernisation especially Uhura. Great portrayal regarding that TOS sucked at showing women who are not cliches.
Well that's a very dismissive attitude towards those who didn't like this movie. I'm an fan of TOS and I wanted to like this movie but the Kirk in this movie is too much of an asshole and among other problems just made it difficult for me to like it. Kirk of TOS never grabbed a woman's breasts and then grinned about it like this Kirk did.
@mummra4ever O.K I may have been too harsh but the idea was to attract new and younger fans. In the movies of the last years there are several characters with emotional problems, criminal past etc. who overcame it. Kirk may just be an answer to this tougher kind of genre cinema. And it is clear that this is an alternate reality that shaped the persons. I see it as the beginning of a new series of films. This one is the pilot which tells how the crew came together. The actionplot is forgetable.
I know that's what it was trying to do but I just wish that they could have done that without getting rid of the more intelligent parts of trek because I still think they could have done so with that intact. Maybe the sequel will be more like that.
@mummra4ever Besides as someone who grew up in 90's with TNG and DS9, the new film presents the original crew in a better way. TOS is too 60's for me. Others who lived in the 60's may have a better understanding for it or feel nostalgia for that era. It's o.k. I feel the same way for the late 80's.
Well I'm not really all that nostalgic for TOS as I only watched it for the first time a few years ago and I think aside from things like the seeming sexist way towards women and the special effects the show holds up otherwise because of it's good characters and it's stories about the human condition which at the core of those stories is timeless to me.
@mummra4ever. Hi. Be careful with my "old friend" Zenuthedick, he loves a good fight but hates to lose. PS don't cave into people who know nothing about Trek, especially the ones who claim to have been watching it for decades. Some of them might be telling the truth but they never really understood Star Trek. Remember it's not nostalgia to want to preserve Roddenberry’s vision of Star Trek; it’s honoring an artist’s legacy. The new Trek is like putting paints on Michael Angelo’s David.
And if you really think TOS Kirk was arrogant then I guess you must not paid attention to scenes like in "Balance of terror" where he says to mccoy that he could be wrong about what he's doing. TOS may have seemed a bit sexist at times but that's more of a fault of the era it was made in but in the 60's the show was ahead of it's time by showing women as officers. The main reason I didn't like this movie is because it had none of the substance of trek at it's best.
What didnt show up in the movie was that the Starfleet engineering team that designed the constitution class starships in the original time line as well as those responsible for the cadet uniforms and following uniform designs happened to be aboard the Kelvin before the tragedy. No explanations are available for the look of the Kelvin, its interior ect because this is before reality is altered.
"We've never known how Kirk and Spock met." This movie is not how they met, this movie only shows how they met after their reality was altered. Since this movie is the new reality the Classic series is nullified. The movies fits fine if we can say it subscribes to the Multiverse theory if so the classic series actually happened.
Huge fan, surprisingly the only bad actor in the whole movie (as much as I still love him) was Mr. Nimoy lol, guess the writers didn't really know how to handle his older character! Even though it was a re-imagining of the show it was still an original storyline which is sadly lacking in hollywood these days. Unbelievably good movie!

This movie raped what Star Trek is and was completely lame. It was a waste of my time and money and I sure as heck in the future won't support this crappy time-line.......
I love it how you all absolutely hate it, but it is the complete embodiment of the Sci Fi Genre. It's a simple question- what happens if something mucked up time and everything was different? The movie does a GREAT job at exploring this, not to mention the fact that the casting was perfect, the directing was amazing, and to be honest it's one of the very few movies to have been released recently.
I agree, they should have hired better actors for the two lead roles. I thought all the supporting actors were great, most better than the originals, but the Spock and Kirk actors turned an otherwise 10.0 movie into an 8.0.
omg. i saw it five times, and jizzed im my pants in the cinema.

If you were not so stuck with head in your ass you woould know that Star Trek has so many things in common with sex. The firts interracial kiss on TV, dealing with homosexuality etc. Star Trek is full of sex but you just don't get it.
I was never a Star Trek fan, and hell, I didn't know the first thing about Star Trek, but I went and saw the movie last Sunday and I loved it so much that I'm going to make myself a fan by renting all the seasons and watching every freaking episode, no matter how long it takes
Yeah, I found that it's actually impossible to rent the seasons, so I bought the first season on Blu Ray and watched the first 3 episodes, and it is really starting to grow on me
You'll be very disappointed if all you're looking for is the various loud noises, flat characters, seizurriffic special effects, and random action sequences portrayed throughout the film.
It was, without a doubt the best movie i've seen. I fell in love with Spoke(who was in love with Uhura, which i thought was beautiful). It was just amazing!
ST XI, as i like to call it, is one of the very best sci-fi movies ever made. When it was over, I realized I hadn't quite had enough and was hoping for the remaining 4 hours (XII, XII) of the series. Honestly, even if you don't consider yourself a Star Trek fan, you need to see it. Brace yourself, if you try to follow the plot on your first viewing, you will be disappointed. The first time is for the action, enjoy it, then go back a few more times to understand the alternate realities.
I saw it too, and I agree. :) But I also have to admit that I'm one of those "woodwork" fans. I just never got into it until now, even though I watched all the episodes as a kid...
ah, this is true. i'm no new star trek fan, myself. my mother grew up on star trek, so i did, too. :) i haven't seen the movie yet but i'm pretty sure it's going to be awesome
The new movie is a disgrace. 6 Billion dead, you don´t care, Spocks mother dies, you don´t feel anything but a special effect rush.
That is when jews take over the making of movies completely. The movies become emotionless, without any style and art. They become nothing special.
Even the military gets its benifit. They should have put a slogan at the beginning and the end of that movie. "Join the military" Look how they let the actors behave.

"Loneliness, that's the bottom line. I was never happy as a child... Christmas, Ted, what does that mean to you? It was a living hell. Do you know what it's like falling in the mud and getting kicked, in the head? With an iron boot? Of course you don't, no one does, that never happens. Sorry, Ted, skip that, it's a dumb question."
I have a vewy gweat fwiend in Wome called Biggus Dickus.
Hahahaha!
Aaah! Ehh!
Wight! Take him away! No, no. I want him fighting wabid, wild animals within a week.
Yes, sir. Come on, you.
Hahahah!
I will not have my fwiends widiculed by the common soldiewy. ------ Anybody else feel like a little.....giggle......when I mention my fwiend............Biggus....................Dickus!
this describes best the problem i have with this "trek" incarnation ... it simply uses the name star trek and its most famous characters to web new fans into the franchise while willfully ignoring the fans that made it live for so long ...
not such a smart move ... but ok, for me (!) as i see it most pre VOY trek-fans even don't consider "enterprise" canon and most surely won't consider this to be canon either
@leewolfgang LOL, if it really bugs you that much, make your own damn version of the movie instead of whining about how it wasn't up to your standards. Have you forgotten that you're a NOBODY in all of this???
It's part of the score, which rocked amazingly. Michael Giacchino, who did the perfect "60's James Bondian spy flick music for "The Incredibles" did the music.
Ya know, I didnt get that Star Trek feeling with this preview. For one, the use carbon emitting automobiles in Kirk's time is ludicrous. Remember the ideals of ST IV?
If you can suspend your sense of reality enough to enjoy Star Treks "technology", then maybe the possibility of the "rare priceless antique car" running on some zero emission fuel of the future is not too great a stretch...
this is a great movie and my dad agrees considering the plot denies nerds like me from the satisfaction of nagging the producers on the many plot hole errors due to the fact that it is an alternate universe :)

I heard that cop at the beginning was played by Tom cruise?
goofywilly 2 years ago
The story was that Tom Cruise was to play Christopher Pike, not a cop.

"I want a 6-foot trench dug around the base. Fill it with gasoline!
Get women and children to the shelters.
Contact the Japanese ambassador.
Rorshack, get me a complete file on everyone who's seen The Sound Of Music more than four times."
On second thought, kill those orders.
Down scope."

"Im not a fan of star trek but this looks badass"
this describes best the problem i have with this "trek" incarnation ... it simply uses the name star trek and its most famous characters to web new fans into the franchise while willfully ignoring the fans that made it live for so long ...
not such a smart move ... but ok, for me (!) as i see it most pre VOY trek-fans even don't consider "enterprise" canon and most surely won't consider this to be canon either

I'm saying the last movie she acted in could have been much better.
This wasn't film, it was shit.

What about the fact that there's absolutely no story?
leewolfgang 2 years ago
- You may be right on that
- There is a Story thou and its a great Plot
- The problem is its a little short
CollegeLoheart 2 years ago
@ leewolfgang
I agree with you. Star Trek has been copying Star Wars for the last 11 years.
I want to see Star Trek moving forward, not back to the past (again), and showing how the crew of the Enterprise did (not) get together.
To me, this is just a bunch of razzle-dazzle for a younger generation which thrives on all flash and no substance.
blueskunk12 2 years ago
@leewolfgang LOL, if it really bugs you that much, make your own damn version of the movie instead of whining about how it wasn't up to your standards. Have you forgotten that you're a NOBODY in all of this???

What is the name of this piece of music? Is it written solely for this movie? I think I've heard it elsewhere and would really like to know.
MyogaSama 3 years ago
It's part of the score, which rocked amazingly. Michael Giacchino, who did the perfect "60's James Bondian spy flick music for "The Incredibles" did the music.

Alright, Harold and Sylar will be on it. This is probably the first time Star Trek looks good. Before that, it usually looked dumb and boring.
tecpaocelotl 3 years ago
Ya know, I didnt get that Star Trek feeling with this preview. For one, the use carbon emitting automobiles in Kirk's time is ludicrous. Remember the ideals of ST IV?
Landrew120880 3 years ago
I didn't see any carbon being emitted...
If you can suspend your sense of reality enough to enjoy Star Treks "technology", then maybe the possibility of the "rare priceless antique car" running on some zero emission fuel of the future is not too great a stretch...
junior09252007 3 years ago
You're right. Im just whining 'cause my original Star Trek crew is gone. Guess im gettin old! Thanx, Landrew120880.
