if you look at he first firefighter that comes out the window he is alreaty half way out the window before he ladder is even there

I guess you live in a perfect world. We live in reality and this stuff does happen. Good job guys. You went home in one piece. This technique is a last ditch one and they utilized it as it was intended, last ditch.

We were wondering in the UK whether that escape is taught or whether it was pure improvisation?

We train twice a year on self rescue

@winters30 It's called ladder bailout, they teach it.  If you have time, it's taught to hook your arm through the rungs and swing your body around and then either climb or slide down. But they didn't have time, obviously, so they improvised.
