i'm not sure, but i think this was the fight when Evander had the residue of muscle tissue in his urine after the fight because he was so exhausted he was burning muscle
@NINJUGGALOTUS True, I just read his bio, you're right. I got goosebumps when I read that part, just for the fact that he put everything he had into that fight, and then some!
What a career Holyfield ended up having after this fight! Everyone knew he was a great fighter but many doubted he'd do well at Heavyweight, especially with Mike Tyson waiting for him there!
Extraordinary...for competitiveness, intensity and a truly awe-inspiring number of big shots exchanged, this match outdoes even Ali-Frazier. I must have typed "Holyfield Qawi" into YouTube's search engine half a dozen times over the past 3 years, and each time I'd find nothing, shake my head and say: "Damn! When is a real boxing fan going to upload this classic battle?"
I'm overjoyed that my wait is finally over. I want to say a BIG thank you to smileyskunk for the upload...sir, I salute you.
@kippister well of course they only fought twice with evander knocking Qawi out i n the second fight. but the Bowe Holyfield triology was very comparable to ali/frazier
first time i hear of it. generally speaking, though, i dont think any modern fight is comparable to ali-frazier - particularly. even if they're both trilogies.
Qawi wasnt exactly young and fresh either.. but you have to remember throwing punches is not what scores points, throwing and landing does. Alot of the punches in the early and mid rounds hit Qawi on the gloves/arms, and defending also scores you points. Towards the end when Qawi got tired defending wasnt enough though, which is when Holyfield started to take over. The little feint at the end of round 15 was a classic, almost anyone but Holyfield and that could of been a Lamotta - Dauthuille :)
Holyfield won this on hand speed. His lightning quick combinations were the key factor. Qawi could never land as many punches at once and therefore he lost. Sad for him, but that's sweet science for you.
Back then it was called majority decision. Huh. Didn't know that. It was a terribly close fight, but Holyfield just edged it. He was more active in the middle and most of the late rounds. Yet Qawi won the last round clearly. Two of the greatest cruiserweights fighting, how could it not be a great fight??
Should of been fight of the year, Mcguigan - Cruz got it though. i thought Qawi edged it, was there a point deduction in the final round or what? i had it 144 - 142 if there wasnt. I had no idea that Qawi was nearly 34 and Holyfield was 23. amazing and i enjoyed this fight very much, glad to see it back up again. You wouldnt happen to have hes fight with Michael Spinks by any chance? :)
it was a split not a majority...

kippister 2 years ago
Why not?
garethac81 2 years ago
not at all comparable with the ali / frazier triology.
kippister 2 years ago
Once again, what is your basis for saying that?
garethac81 2 years ago
i think its widely recognized as among the most famous rivalry in boxing history if not the most famous. and i also think thats pretty nailed down.
kippister 2 years ago
Most famous, yes. Most exciting matches? That is another matter entirely.

i think you'll find they're somewhat related.
