  • and you pulled off 4:30 amazingly well too!

  • the riff at like 2:00 is the BEST

  • stam1na ! youre from finland, huh ? :D

  • @UrUmTsI pitää paikkansa!

  • @Ronixis Hienoa :)

  • this is amazing man jus wow <3

  • @lambishh thanks man!

  • It seems you look like thin and toll. You're hard to steady the guitar without belt. Right? Nice cover and sorry for my E.

  • dude. whats this tuning? standard? drop D ?

  • @trusodapop standard E, if I remember correctly

  • @Ronixis i had a feeling. opeth man. best band ever man. thank you very much sir

  • @trusodapop I figured the song out by ear. Backing track is just the original song, I added the click in there with Cubase.

  • great bro!!!

  • Goddamn, that is impressive.

  • Don't slide the tritones on the first riff. It's actually a power chord with an octave, and you slide the top note of the octave up to a minor second...or in tabspeak, it's 7-9-9 to 7-9-10 rather than 7-8-9 to 8-9-10. And on the second riff you're playing a mix of both guitar parts rather than either one. All in all, though, good work! Keep it up.

  • what amp are you using?

  • @Doddus Marshall Master Lead Combo with Boss SD-1 and Ibanez SM-7 in this video. I have totally different gear at the rehearsal place.

  • Last 2 minutes are fucking epic.

  • It would've been a little better if you played the other guitars parts, especially the riff at 1:11. The other guitar part is so much better and more fun to play. Awesome video though

  • @skateordie431 why not post a vid of you doing it =A

  • @filipskorec I probably will actually, I've been meaning to. My input jack on my guitar is broken right now (and my amp is shiiiiiiite), I think i'll do it when I get it fixed. Along with Empires Erased by Born of Osiris!

  • You NAILED that song. Great job. \m/

  • Good cover! Check out my cover:D

  • at the start of every winter i play this song, good job man

  • damn, that was great. good musicality...the tremolo's, etc were right on.

  • That was awesome. Where did you get tabs for it?

  • @bmitzvahcrasher2 I figured it out mostly by ear, but there's some tabs in 911tabs-site

  • Nice JPM.

  • Well fucking done mate!!

  • You're nuts. The only thing missing is a straight-jacket.

  • Horns up to you man!

  • I just subscribed to your channel, haha. Great work.

  • The first solo just melts me

    /Subscribed

  • Two words for you: Holy shit. Well done and nicely performed man! Keep it up!

  • Thanks :)

  • i wasn't expecting much. But this was a pretty epic cover.

  • Well thank you, MetallKaos

  • Nice, pretty hard to play!

Is this Opeth's most difficult to play song? I haven't listened to their older stuff yet.

  • I doubt that this is the hardest

  • Most opeth songs aren't really that hard to learn imo. Maybe this is because the riffs are so catchy that when you get round to learning them, you already know them though lol.

This one isn't that hard. I'd imagine that heir apparent is pretty tricky at the end of the solo but can't really think of much else.

  • Well, I guess you're right. I've listened these songs so much that I know them by heart before I even try to find out where to put my fingers on the fretboard. But you know, all kind of music is difficult in it's own way. Especially, if you want to perform the piece perfectly with the necessary style and feel.

In my opinion, the "difficulty level" of music is mostly determined by how close it is to your comfort zone.

  • Leper Affinity is one of their easier songs, but the difficulty off the riffs isn't what makes learning these songs tough. It's the structure, and having to learn 50 riffs hahaha

  • I agree, Opeth songs are pretty easy to play. However, I couldn't write a song as good as they can no matter how hard I tried, which is why they are so awesome.

  • Yup. Mikael is the man!

  • @Intotheorchard The Drums are very hard I think. Just technical

  • @JordoHC Yeah, Lopez is a god

  • @jamma246 - Opeth are a very technical band; not as easy as you make them sound. lol

  • @murleyspatch Agreed.

  • @jamma246 true, but I like playing their songs, because there's always at least one riff that I have to practice and perfect before I play through. The songs are just so damn fun

  • @skateordie431 Yep, that's how I feel exactly. I think that I've learned like nearly 7 opeth songs, which is probably about 25% of all the songs I can actually play!

I might learn the whole of watershed. I already can play heir apparent, hessian peel and hex omega and am learning the lotus eater. After that, there's only coil (pretty easy), burden and porcelain heart. I can't imagine any other album that I could learn so much of and still be having fun doing it, it'd be more of a chore.

  • @jamma246 I'm actually doing the whole of Blackwater Park right now...I've perfected Leper Affinity and Blackwater Park, doing Bleak (easy) and The Funeral Portrait now. I have to listen to Watershed more, it hasn't hit my like the other ones do, it'll probably grow on me a lot though.

  • @skateordie431 I'm exactly the same. I got into Opeth just after they'd released Damnation and Deliverance and when Ghost Reveries came out it blew me away. Watershed completely let me down. I've really tried to like it. More than anything else I've ever listened to but there isn't one song I'd rate 5/5 on the album. Blackwater park is all 5/5 as is Ghost Reveries.

  • @LukeQuietus Dude you gotta listen to it more. Since then I've gotten into it so much. The album's amazing, my favorite tracks being Heir Apparent and Hessian Peel. Even the unusual ballad (Burden) is good. Mikael's clean singing got a lot better, and at certain parts he gets extremely brutal with his growling, namely on the fast blast-beat part on Heir Apparent, and one of the two-chord organ-guitar progressions on The Lotus Eater. And the solo's are better than ever imo. I cant stop listening!

  • can you please send me the tabs or tell me where you got em? i've had this song stuck in my head for the past few days

  • I figured the song out mostly by ear, but you can find the tabs from the 911tabs -site

  • Tabs please :p

  • I'm sure you'll find some pretty accurate transcriptions with Google.

  • What's the tuning? Somebody told me that it was in standard tuning, but I don't know. I really can't tune down with my floyd rose

  • It's E standard :)

  • Okay, thanks d00d!!

  • dude nice cover, 5/5

  • thanks

  • Nice cover again! Could I make two requests?

1- Could you please send me tabs for the solo? You played it almost perfectly and it doesnt look so difficult, so I want to give it a try

2- Could you make a cover for Drapery Falls, from the Blackwater Park album?

  • 2- same album as The Leper Affinity :P just an add up here :P

  • Damn, I have not seen the solo covered that well yet! Way to go!

  • thanks :)

  • Great cover! i like the way you ended the vid by just walking out and turning the lights off. It actually added to the calm atmosphere once you'd finished haha

  • It's nice to please you. Thanks!

  • great cover dude

  • ty OsseaShredder

  • Amazing cover. What amp are you using here? I'd really love to know!

  • Thanks! I'll post my whole signal chain, since the amp has a little to nothing to do with the distortion sound:

Guitar -> Boss SD-1 (drive at zero, just to tighten up the signal) -> Ibanez SM-7 -> 10-band eq -> Marshall Master Lead Combo.

I'd rather play with different gear, since this is mostly stuff I've gotten a bargain or for free. The amp is a 70's made solid state version of JCM800. It takes a lot of tweaking to sound decent. Let me know if you want more details.

  • An SM-7? I have one as well, but it sounds real nasty by itself, even with my GE-7 eq. Yours sounds very different from mine!

Goes quite nicely with my amp's gain channel (gain at 0) as a boost though, you could try that out. I'm using a solid state Randall RX20 with celestion speakers.

How long have you been playing? It'd be awesome if you could cover Dirge for November, and Blackwater Park!

  • Yeah, the Smash Box is really undynamic, bad sounding distortion. I've cranked my pre-amp volume pretty high to warm things up. So the distortion is actually a blend of SD-1 (treble boost), Smash Box (gain fairly low) and pre-amp gain moderately cranked. The eq before amp helps to tame some of the higher fizz and boost the scooped high mids.

I've been playing maybe 7-8 years.

  • thanks!

  • I love Opeth and especially this song. Great job covering it, very skilled and clean playing!

  • thanks!

  • great tone dude, great tone. awesome cover it was flawless holmes. and it helps me figure this song out. appreciate it

  • I'm glad it helps!

  • awesome job! I'm learning this song as well, it's great fun.

  • I agree - happy playing!

  • let lose baby!!

  • love the exit :)

  • Okay thanks! I was hoping it wasn't too artsy :D

  • Awesome playing.. it's a really hard song because of the riffs change methods that opeth use but you made a great job for 3 days of working...Really really good!

  • thank you!

  • sweet playing dude, nailed it :P

  • Congratulations man!

  • Thanks!

  • Nice! Respect for managing the whole 10 minutes with no cock-ups. Shows how much using your little finger can benefit when performing solos.

  • Is this normal guitar tune?

  • Yeah, it's in standard-e.

  • floatingburrito approves of this cover

  • Wow!! Your cover is very good! I'm a fan.

  • You owned the solo

    nice job

  • thank you

  • im learning this at the moment...its a tough one but you fuckin owned it...nice playing pal

  • Hey thanks! I hope you'll nail it!

  • great cover man. i'm a drummer who also plays guitar. anyway, i'm just curious, what kind of guitar is that?

  • Thank you! It's an Ibanez JPM100P4 (John Petrucci signature).

  • do they still make those, or did they stop after he got endorsed by ernie ball music man?

  • Yeah, they discontinued manufacturing these, but I bet you can find these used easily.

  • Dude, am I the only one who plays the first riff strumming down only?

  • Maybe. At least according to live footage, Opeth plays it with alternate strumming. It sounds like that on the cd also.

  • Ah well shit. Great cover though. Definitely better than mine.

  • Thanks!

  • absolutely error free! awesome!

  • There's a few, but thanks! I really appreciate it!

  • Amazing work man. Played perfectly.

By the way, did you learn it by tab or by ear, because I would kill for the tabs.

  • Thank you! Mostly by ear, but there are a few decent tabs out there. Google them out.

  • Well done...the solo is amazing, I have to agree with opaek1 it is really the best solo part for the lepper affinity here on youtube!!! Propz man!! And very nice guitar you have there!! Keep on rocking

  • thanks!

  • I can see their are so many faggots on here that love to give negative criticism when faced with an obviouse talent. This is by far the best solo performance I have seen of The Leper Affinity (a personal favourite of myne) on youtube and I've seen most of em. Keep up the excelent work, you have most definately inspired me to check out the tab...and if any of you faggots want to post a superior performance feel free,I could do with a laugh. Opaek

  • Thanks for the praise!

Though Unholyconfessional was right about me playing the opening riff incorrectly. I think critisism is a good thing, as it pushes me towards being a better player and knowing these songs thoroughly.

  • Well done man, it mostly sounds spot on and definitely seems perfectly executed :)

Your vid has inspired me to try and learn this song on my own. Need some practise on some parts but I'm getting there slowly.

Also, I love Opeth too and that's a nice JPM P4 you have there. ;)

  • you're playing it wrong... :(

  • sorry for that :(

  • You did good, but the first chord is actually just a power chord on fret 7 string five and you slide your pinky to 10... I recently learned this song too, it's embarrassing to me as a guitarist to think someone sings this better than I'll ever sing and play it better than I'll ever play... And write is :S

  • yeah, and the post-solo breakdown is wrong too

  • Overall, you did very good, I'm subscribing. I suggest anyone else who likes progressive metal do so aswell, you can play really well.

  • thanks a lot!

  • Really cool song, you should try Dirge For November.

    Nice job

  • Yeah, Ronixis, cover Dirge for November!

    Great cover.

  • Yeah, maybe I should. It's one of my favourites on Blackwater Park.

  • bravo man, you didn't fuck up once.

  • great job and guitar;)5*

  • nice job man. also do you use an acoustic simulator pedal for that one part or do you just use the clean setting on your amp. and if you do use an acoustic pedal, which one do you use cause im looking for to get. thanks

  • Thanks! The acoustic parts were played through my amps clean channel, so I didn't use any simulator pedal. However, I used Boss SD-1 as a slight boost to warm things up.

In this video, I also flick my toggle switch to middle position, which splits up splits both pickups. That, I think, makes the clean stuff sound a bit more lively.

  • hey man nice playing and sick techniqe

im glad to see someone keeping there fingers curled on there right hand

  • Is that a Riverside poster I see on the wall? If so where can I get one!!! Great video!

  • WOW, STAM1NA!!!

that t-shirt looks great, that finnish band is awesome too!

n' yeah, your tuning is typically correct, amazing playin, cool RG370 *i guess*

    keep it up dude \m/

  • I LOVED IT,great,damn!

  • Holy shit, nice job. This song is so fucking hard to play. At least for me since I'm a noob. Can't wait till I'm as good as you!

  • Wonderful Playing man. You made it look easy.

  • I'm glad you liked it.

  • Stäm1nää! helvetin hyvin vedetty (Y)

  • kiits!

  • where you get the tab man? i dont have guitar pro anymore :(

  • I figured this one out mostly by ear. But you can find some decent tabs (especially thepowertab-version!) on 911-tabs.

  • Really good! I enjoyed it. Grats

  • thanks

  • nailed it! nice cover

  • Thank you!

  • amazing cover... how long have you been playing? and where did you get the tab?

  • Thanks!

I've been playing almost seven years now. The parts I didn't learn by ear, are learned from tabs in 911tabs. Check out the powertab and guitar pro versions.

Some parts are correct, some aren't. In fact there are some incorrectly played parts in this video, so listen closely to the actual song before trusting what's written on the tab.

  • good playing. you have really long fingers

  • thanks brandooon.

  • Your pinky finger is fuckin long...

  • perfect stuff man, great job! say that would be a balls to sing along with!!

  • Thanks! You got that right.

  • I love Opeth, Awesome cover!

  • Thanks, me too!

  • fuck yeah man..

where did you get the tabs at?

  • Excellent job bud, now you made me wanting an electric guitar. ;)

  • good job man...no fail AT ALL

  • thanks!

  • mitä soitit

  • Absolutely flawless. Well done.

  • You've got it down for sure...nice!

  • Very well done sir.

  • good cover

  • awesome! 5 stars man! |m| this is my fav song of opeth :D

  • Actually I wanted to make a "leper" cover, but now I´m thinking to change my mind!

    5 bugs

  • Actually i wanted to make a "leper" cover, but now I´m thinking to change my mind :)!

    5 bugs

  • nice ending, very fitting for a November's eve

  • wow , very very well done

    you play with such feel

what other music are you into ?

  • You are amazing ,the best cover of this song ..... very good

  • 1 word? Awesome!! this song rules!

  • a truly beautiful song. I can only play the solo and the bridge before it but I want to learn the whole thing.

  • you curve your right hand's fingers into your palm while playing, like me. but it causes noise while i do it, because my fingers touch the lower strings. so i have started to train my right hand wide opened.

but i see, you play that way too. i'm confused. :D

    meanwhile, really great video!
