How can this world contain so much goodness, as exemplified by this performance, and yet so much of the low life, all at the same time? Handel and those who play his music elevate us all, Praise God!
Flatass privileged straight white christian males choose other flatass privileged straight white christian males along with a handful of extremely talented Asians so the flatasses can say they have "persons of Color" in the orchestra (in a divide and conquer strategy). This is fake diversity. Black folk are vastly underrepresented in euro classical orchestras and need to play 100x better to be picked. It's typical ameriKKKan racism all over again.
Many pieces, notably Scarlatti's, lose something when played on the guitar, but they also gain something - the tonalities of the guitar and its inherent music chamber makes its own contribution through tonal properties that other instruments do not produce. That's not to say this is any better, but there's no reason to be judgmental about it - just recognize that this music has a place in the guitar repertory and enjoy that for what it offers.

This person of color should be playing a pipa instead of betraying his culture and wasting his time with dodo western music. The music of straight white christian males is moribund.
@tranurse, Yes of course one can find beauty in different cultures around the world. However, Communities of Color need to represent their own culture or it will be swallowed up, diluted (pat boone style), or even raped and lynched by the dominant culture.
@lewars1912, No. He should be representing his culture and keep it real before it is swallowed up by boring privileged straight white christian male culture. The christians have all the power. People of culure have no power. 'bama is a tool of christian white folk..
@Leowavekid, Yes, they are free to represent who they are, but by betraying their culure persons of Color let dominant boring privileged oppressive straight white christian male take over the culture and become "culture" by default.
@lewars1912, Yes but people should be free to criticize whomever they wish. Minoru should be playing a samisen, not a western instrument associated with imperialism, colonialism, and indeed cultural imperialism.
@lewars1912, People need to speak up. Yes, people can listen or ignore, but people still need to speak up. This piece sounds sounds like one of Muhammad's (SAAW) lengthy explosive farts in the face of Allah.
A very talented guitarist, without any doubt. However, I personally feel Handel's Sarabande loses most of its strength when transcribed for guitar. It's a piece that sounds threathening and gloomy, yet beautiful at the same time. I always think about a tornado or other destructive force of nature when hearing it.
The intimate and soft character of the guitar ruins that in my opinion. It sounds too nice, too friendly. As such, it loses much of its grandeur...
that's pretty obvious, u're comparing 1 classical guitar to an entire orchestra lol... tis the same as comparing a 4 cilinder 1000cc engine to a V8 with
6000cc, o' course the V8 will sound better and powerful. Maybe a classical guitar quartet would sound closer with some other instruments and percussion added to it.
@leftoverture1976 I'm not even comparing the guitar with the orchestral version, but with a piano version. The guitar has a beautiful sound, but it is simply too limited, especially in the more sharp, threatening area, to fully bring the Sarabande to life.

i do take baroque music seriously. check out Robert Donington- The Interpretation of Early Music, or Victor Rangel-Ribiero's A Practical Guide to the Performer. There are scholars out there who dedicate their lives to studying music. or go straight to the source, ang get the treatises of the baroque masters themselves- Geminiani, CPE Bach, Leopold Mozart, Thomas Mace, who describe dozens of ornamenting techniques and more. and it's juilliard, by the way.
@DjangoMeetsColtrane When transposing a piece from one instrument to another, there are going to be some things that are different. Sometimes octaves are switched. And sometimes whole voices are temporarily taken out because they can't all be played on the new instrument. Whether its keyboard to guitar or orchestra to piano, some things are going to change...so I think an improper mordent is of no consequence here.
well you could say the original compositions lacks the "OOMPH" of the barry lyndon version. Because that version was orchestrated to a large orchestra.
His bass strings sounds rather bright, they are probably new. My guess is that he has to change the strings just a few days before, and on a classical guitar the nylon strings need up to a week to stabilize (all strings are nylon, the bass ones just have a metal wire around the nylon core). His guitar was probably tuned at the beginning of the piece, and he was afraid of finishing out of tune. He's perfectionist anyway, I can't hear anything, and it was just a few seconds before the end.
johnquantran, He has the tempo variation for artistic taste, he sped up and slowed down at his own will for he is the musician playing the song and this is the way he hears it himself.
