my truck would have done this in 4low with open diffs and no CDL its so easy and i can see its easy ny just looking at how far the front bumper is off the ground
Both Liberty in Patriot did well through these obstacles. Liberty did better, but it was aided because it got to see the Patriot tackle the terrain first.
A lot of how well a vehicle does in off-roading depends on what line (path) the driver takes and how he points his tires. You'll see the Patriot first tries to take a line that doesn't work, then backs up and successfully uses a different path by pointing the tires directly in line with the contour of the trail. The Liberty does the same.
I just read on Yahoo News that this is one of the most intelligent vehicles to purchase due to it's low price, low insurance cost, low maintenance and it can run up against the Liberty with no problem. I also saw a raised Patriot go through a mud bog like it was no big deal. No, I'm not a salesman, I'm just looking for a new car....Oh yeah, the gas milage looked good too.
That Patriot has the FDII drivetrain, throw that into 4WD mode and low gears and the brake differential would make the Jeep go through that obstacle with no problem. Two wheels up in the air the Patriot still gets traction. I say the driver didn't know how to drive his Patriot. I own a lifted Wrangler and a Patriot FDII and the Patriot does surprise me sometimes, it goes places you wouldn't think possible. It's all on knowing how to drive your car.
Before you post comments about me not knowing how to drive my vehicle, read all the posts... I made a post about this earlier. The vehicle was in 4-Lock, and likely Low too - I can't remember now, this was a year ago. I'm very well versed in the Patriot capabilities and how to drive the vehicle, thanks. If you know so much about off-roading, you'll know that pictures and videos don't tend to accurately represent obstacles.
I apologize, I didn't read all the comments, I menat no offense. It just doesn't look like 4WD lock and low gears. It ould be the stock tires, which, in my opinion, is the weak point of the FDII package. Put some AT tires or something like a Wrangler Duratrac and the Patriot will be a whole lot more capable.
lol If you were using low-lock it wouldn't have lost power like that. That was high-lock. Also the lack of locking differentials causes the one-wheel-peel thing.
you can still get v6 and v8 motors with Jeeps. The Patriot and compass are 4 cyl models Jeep came out with to pick up sales in the lucrative "cute-ute" market.
@azmendozafamily what is your deffinition of a car engine? so what it has a 2.4 line 4...its get the power to the wheels so whats the big deal. is there a difference between a car engine or a truck engine as long as they both are gas...
the JK rubicons run a 3.8 v6 engine that dodge used in mini vans and they are by far the most capible vehicle off road stock.
@iENJOIskating209 my bad, when i said that i ment that rubicon wranglers are the best vehichle you can buy new and take off road, when compared to other new SUV/Trucks.
@iENJOIskating209 just because land rover has more clearance and power doesnt make it a better off roader...ive seen some a 4 cyl jeep go through some sick stuff before. but im not even sure if LRs come with front and rear locking diffs, they dont come with offroad tires "street slicks", they dont have very good aproach angle, and who takes a 40k+ vehichle offroad when you can get a great jeep for half that.
@kddcc yes land rovers come with CDL and front and rear lockers then dont need to come with off road tires because they still do good off road with their ABS and TC systems.their approach and departure angles are the same or only 1 degree off of a jeep.jeeps are not so cheap either and it depends if you get them used or new and its an investment
This was a while ago, and I was under camera pressure, but I'm pretty sure I went into the moguls in regular 4-Lock. Once it wouldn't go, I put it in Low 4-Lock. Could have gone in without 4-Lock and once stopped, put it in 4-Lock (not Low). Unsure. If I'm out that way again this summer, I will re-shoot the experiment.
After watching this video a few times there HAS to be something wrong with the brake lock differential not working. I've had no problem with patriot with wheels up in the air, although it might not have been in 4WD lock mode, because that changes the agressiveness of the BLD programming
No. He has 4WD. But it looks like his BCTS isn't kicking in like it should. I would ask the dealer to do a STARSCAN. The brakes should have kicked in a little to redistribute power to the wheel with better traction.
i would have my patrol in 2wd through that.... lol

@Luigirepublic
Sometimes having tires more appropriate for the terrain helps too ;-)

@sanmusa I would have to agree. I don't think the driver knew how to drive the Jeep Patriot.

The engine is good enough. spinning wheels are maybe from false tyres.
In germany Jeep an offroad magazine did driving training with wrangler at s tyres its much better offroad perform.

not hating on the new jeeps, but they need to get better engines, these sound like cars. They need to bring back the 4.0 I6... that was a beast.

Do remember that even though the Patriot can be "Trail Rated", it is still driven by a CAR engine.

I have a feeling I would've done better in my FDI 5spd. I've done worse with it, and never have the CVT problem.
