Needs a sequel.. What about The Simpsons? The emergence of animation as an adult medium for exploring satire? South Park, Family Guy.. And the amazing animation of the 90's: Dr Katz, The Maxx, Duckman? I thoroughly enjoyed this history of animation but it only feels like half the story...
I don’t think it’s very fair to say that true animation ends in the 1970 as many are saying. Animation has always had its ups and downs with some decades being more successful then others. Animation is still living and breathing, responding to culture and movements in every part of the world. Just look at animation from the 1990’s and today and you’ll see that there are plenty of gems that even take influence from the classics. To say that animation is dead is a sign of ignorance.
What about Don Bluth? He with some success tried to save the golden age of animation in the late 70's 80's and 90's with his films The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, The land Before Time and others, which where all done in the classic animation tradition!
yes i guess in some way 2d animation won't be as popular as back in those days, but i think its just how 3d animation and cgi has has just been mass marketed because they're going to be feature length films, as they spend lots of money to advertise. but i believe that there will always be a need for 2d animation
That's a sad end.. I sincerely hope 2D will return one day
Personally, I try to contribute as much as I can to 2D animation and I'm beginning a 3 year study program of 2D animation a school this autumn...
I hope my children would have the opportunity to enjoy well done cartoons, as I enjoyed them when I was young... the cartoons these days are really ugly and our world is becoming too
its sad that 2D never will get populare again.. it will always have a place in my heart and im gonna evolve from drawing to animating, keep it ging for the rest of my life, home or at work, i will pass it on so that ppl in the future can see how magical they are.
what about russian animation? japanese animation? what about digital animation?? It's more of history of american animated cartoons ...not history of animation...
@roxonogueira 2D animation in japanese will never end :) but what they are doing now is mixing 2D and 3D animation in alot of japanese anime, but only use 3D animation for effects.
Westerners view animation as primarily made for kids but adult audiences in East Asian countries find animation very appealing. I wonder why is it so. I'm 24 years old and still enjoy cartoons!
The possibilities of rendering worlds in animation are infinite, whereas live action is very limited by the physical world in which it is filmed.
yeah, cartoons have declined a lot, but cartoon network still made some great shows like Dexters laboratory and Courage the cowardly dog, their both more non-sensical like the older ones and I really love them.
one thing i must note is that this is the history of animation in the United States, other countries had their own animation, there's Nu Pogodi in Russia which is actually a very good cartoon and the behemoth that is ANIME from Japan.
I wonder why all those great 2D-animations have dissapeared.
The best 2D animations of today come from people who work very hard, not for profit, but just for the beauty of the animation itself or something (like Adam Phillips, greatest flash animator in the world :p) and eventually work freelance.
It looks like all the attention has gone to 3D, allthough 3D is nice, I think that's a pitty.
I hope there will always remain great 2D animations like this, at least for the time I'm still here :p.
isnt animation more popular than ever-?grand theft audio, saints row two, mass effect, thats all animation, but more complex, and you can move and control it...
you are too monatone. other then I love this series it's hard to find any good compilation of animation in america let alone animation outside of the us.
In conclusion: some cartoons are great for the smoothness and the good animation, and it's a joy for eyes and soul; some others focus more on the subject, they make you think about society or whatever and I loke them; some others are made just to make you laugh, and if they succeed I like them. The animations I can't stand, are those who try to copy other's style (usually Disney), resulting in conveying nothing to me.
To watch great animation one has to turn his attention toward festival and independent productions, it would be inimmaginable today a fine series like Tom & Jerry for TV. Anyway, although I LOVE classic animation, I also like some stylized animation; a lot of modern cartoon resembles UPA productions. Some early Bozzetto's Signor Rossi shorts are really simple and not fluid animation, but they have personality and have a story that make you think.
It's a sad conclusion... Animation evolves, now it's 3D era, but it's still animation. 2D is still alive; it's less considered for feature lenght films than 3D, but I hope it's just a period of time and then 2D will be more considered again. Other kind of animation are bringing great results (Aardman production, with stop motion). About 2D shorts, there are no more such fluid animations like in the 40s (the last I can remember are Animaniacs).
Sadly, I doubt 2d animation will ever gain the popularity it once had. I think before too long, 2D live action films will be a thing of the past. Connoisseurs will always exist. I'm almost done with a chalk animated short, if you wanna check out a couple clips from it click on my screen name, there's two videos. I'm gonna combine live action and chalk, I'll be done with the whole film in 2 weeks
@flagday84 2D animation will never go away. It's already on its way back. Give it some time and you'll see. 2D animation will always be superior to 3D animation.
@flagday84 I disagree. I think there's a perfect chance of 2D regaining it's glory. You'll know as well as I that any animation medium can be popular and catch the public's attention as long as it's done well enough. What people don't want to see at the end of the day is a bad movie.
Sorry, i do realize you wrote that comment 3 years ago lol
The reason Animaniacs was so fluidly animated, was because of the majority of the episodes were animated by TMS (Tokyo Movie Shinsha). Today, we have to rely on outside sources to do our work for us. I'm not too sure if we even have good animators in this country, compared to others on the outside, but it's a safe bet to say no, we really don't. We are even losing our good sense of style, and quickly. We couldn't come up with a good appealing idea, even if we tried.
And like it's said before, history repeats itself. So we might have a special nack for animation in the future, like we did in the early 20's and 40's. I personally like the 90's as it was a resurgence that we didn't have in the early 80's, 70's, and 60's. I think animation was finally back when we had cartoons like Tiny Toons, and Duck Tales on Networks. Which were fantastic cartoons by the way.
@leoagate it is sad to think that animation has stopped evolving, and that the best we know was invented almost 70 years ago. Imagine what we could have achieved in all those years in hand drawn animation.

As American animation quality declined, Japanese animation was moving the artform forward with increasingly innovative and cinematic tv animation.
While we were churning out shlock like Jabberjaw, they were creating hugely influencial masterpieces such as Space Battleship Yamato.
