When crops failed, or hunting was bad, they took a girl from the village and tied her to the top of the highest tree in the forest and left her bound there to slowly starve as a sacrifice to the pagan gods, they replaced the actual blood sacrifice with a straw effigy in later years, this became the tradition of the angel on top the Christmas tree.
Thats insane the point of crhistmas is an was based on the birth of christ hince why you put an angel or even a start (angel) meaning the angels that came to his birth and the (star)to represnt the star birth of jesus.
