Bette was indeed a wonderful Actress, but I would prefer Joan over her any day. Bette wasn't exactly my type of beautiful, people make a fuss about her big eyes..... they are eyes, everybody has them! But Joan had something that others didn't, she was beautiful, glamorous, dramatic, and sometimes scary, she had it all. Some people don't like her because of mommie dearest, but she should be known for hear on screen acting, not beating her kids with hangers!

Both women are gorgeous but looking at both women in their hey day I'd have to say that Joan is the prettier of the two. HOWEVER, when the two are next to each other I'd find myself staring at Bette. She has a presence about her that pulls you in and commands all the attention that Joan doesn't. All I do when i see Bette is try to figure out what's going on behind those eyes!!! Bette would have aged a lot better if it wasn't for the boose and cigarettes too.

This is an entertaining book, When I asked Mamie Van Doren about the authenticity of certain occasions, Miss Van Doren said " Bette and Joan were like all of us, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. I loved them both very much." period. No comment on the origional question. You have to decide for yourself what you want to beleive, or not.

Davis swore like a sailor, played cards with the technicians and didn't give a shit about glamour; and Davis commented that they made her look rather "handsome" in Now Voyager. Davis was a "broad." Joan was a lady, always proper and polite (and set fashion trends), but she too was a "broad" if you scratched her. lol. I love them both too.
