What is amazing about her is not just the voice but the intent. Most opera singers today are just a caricature of a character. There is no intent behind the music. She feels the lyrics, the words, the intent, the character. It is fascinating.

Always such a ravishing performer. I think certain bits towards the end of this aria left a little something to be desired vocally, but still, the manifold textures of her voice are evident even within the short span of 6.5 minutes. And her facial expressions, the way she emotes and her stage presence alone make this worth watching again and again (quite apart from her vocals I mean). Truly a sui generis performer, who "owned" every moment onstage, and could make even a mistake look graceful.

Man what a voice. That's rather impressive what she did, considering what is still changing and being tested in voice development. Her teacher must have been fantastic. He probably wrote in some of those crazy cadenzas and ornamentations too, because some of those are not in the original music.
Maria Callas had two teachers. Maria Trivella (first one) and the brilliant Elvira de Hidalgo (Who also trained Leyla Gencer, I believe) who taught her everything about Bel Canto. De Hidalgo often spoke of Callas and Callas always spoke of de Hidalgo with warmth and gratitude. This was a great evening for her, even though I did not like the Act II of Tosca that followed. Compared to the 1964 version...it's just a sketch full of promise.

This performance is completely about showing off dexterity, not musicality or technique. Most of those notes are not in the music and she's changes tempo every two bars, you can hear the orchestra having to shift constantly to keep up or slow down.
She's amazing, isn't she? Her musical intelligence, her artistry, the beauty of her phrasing....her musicality... Unmatched to this day. There are prettier timbres (Nothing special, what you do with it matters more)....but there is no greater artist in her fach. Exquisite lady and artist.

Callas was not simply a singer who could act, or an actress who could sing - but a singer with a VOICE quite unlike any you have heard or will hear - totally unique and utterly her - and, not forgetting her own never to be compared charm, style and artistic supremacy. There were great singers in the last century - but Callas is beyond comparison. I would not put her with the other legends like Caruso et al - she belongs with Mozart and Verdi for her services to opera and indeed art.

Callas was not simply a singer who could act, or an actress who could sing - but a singer with a VOICE quite unlike any you have heard or will hear - totally unique and utterly her - and, not forgetting her own never to be compared charm, style and artistic supremacy. There were great singers in the last century - but Callas is beyond comparison. I would not put her with the other legends like Caruso et al - she belongs with Mozart and Verdi for her services to opera and indeed art.
