It's because spearow is a flying type to and fighting is weak against flying so even through spearow is normal flying is used to counter fighting moves
It should be regular effective cause it's not very effective against flying but super effective against normal so it should just cancel out or something, but it's 1st Gen so what can I say?
Actually, Green version was just Japan's Blue version. You see, when the original games were released in Japan, they were released as Red & Green. Japan's Blue version was an update of those games with better graphics/script. When Red & Blue came to America, the graphics/script used Japan's Blue version, but the Blue version in America was based off of Green version in Japan (for purposes of Pokemon locations). I don't know why they decided on Blue instead of Green in the US.
Same as Generation I, but the user cannot avoid Gust, Thunder, Twister, or Whirlwind during the semi-invulnerable turn, and will receive double damage from Gust and Twister, unless the flying Pokémon would not receive damage from the moves.
The user may also be hit in the air if it was previously targeted by Lock-On or Mind Reader, and then struck the following turn. Swift, Bide and Transform no longer hit on their own during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly.
in the first gen, the super effective or not very effective message appeared when an attack was SE/NVE on ONE of the opponents types. however, the correct damage was still applied
The dual-type mechanic in the game is really weird. If a move's type is both super effective and not very effective, it is either of those, not neutral. For example, ground type is always super effective on grass/poison, fighting is always not very effective on normal/flying, electric always is super effective on flying/electric, etc.
In R/B/Y only one of the pokemon's type affects weakness and resistance when the two confict. So Spearow's flying type was the only applied in that situation.
the reason for it being not very very effective is because is really random, it suppose to be neutral like every generation after RBY, for example if you hit a zapdos with an electric attack it will say is super effective, when it should be neutral, is just random, some pkmn that should be neutral to certain moves are either super effective or not very effective, try a poison attack on a poison/ grass pkmn.
I was thinking about it, but I didn't want this playthrough to simply be a remake of my Fire Red one. I'm planning to only use one Pokemon I did in that playthrough in this one (which should be fairly obvious).
In Gen 1, types did not "balance out" type effectiveness. For example, a fighting type attack is not very effective against normal/flying types, while a ground type attack is super effective against grass/poison types. I have no idea how the game decides whether a move that would be neutral because of dual types becomes half effective or super effective, but there you go.
Hey guys! I need some feedback on my videos! Think you can help me out? Also, feel free to leave questions/comments. I answer all of them :) thanks guys :)
@pokemanic17 have you seen the video at 10:40? he clearly proves that its a dual type. i believe the normal type on normal flying pokemon were just ignored for some odd reason until pokemon stadium came out.
@BigAgentJ there is no mono-flying type in pkmn, except for the new gen that one of the "legendary or legendary tier pkmn is a flying type only... the thing is that flying is more of an ability in my view then a type..because u cannot just have a flying type because the other type will tell you how the pkmn will look... atleast in my view.
@SpielkissforMe He's the first and only so far, so I restate my comment only applies to Pokemon of the first 4 generations or all none Legendary Pokemon in general except Kecleon whose ability allows it to be a mono flying type (other wise it's a normal type).
I think it wasn't effective because normal flying is the only type in this game that can be not very and super at the same time, so we never noticed this, and not very effective would overpower super effective
Nacho, my uncle died 5 months ago, and one of the things he said to me before his death, that we should never leave what we started out doing, only to ditch it in the sand. He was referring to my school (I dropped out you see)
And even though it is quite blunt, I think it applies for you walkthrough channel as well. Please finish your HG/SS game, I think you will have the full support of all you subscribers. If you want to go out, at least do it on a high.
@superskill123 Close, but no cigar. First of all, Spearow is Normal/Flying type in each generation, making Normal its primary type. Second, in cases where the game erroneously sends a "super effective" or "not very effective" message, the game mechanics will choose the coordinating message for which ever type has the highest ordering entry in its calculations. This means that the message that is sent is not based on whether the type is the pokemon's primary or secondary type, but rather...
@DRE9592 ...whichever of the two types it had to think about last. In this case, the Flying type had a higher entry order number than the Normal type, so the game sent the message that it would've sent if Spearow were just pure Flying type and a Fighting type move was used against it ("Not very effective"). But, don't worry, the game calculates the proper amount of damage (in this case neutral or 1X), it just sends the wrong message.
@DRE9592 I had the same confusion a while ago when I was battling on Route 15. I was battling Bellsprouts and Venonats using Acid with my Tentacool. I was surprised when I read the messages that a Poison type move was "Not very effective" against a Bellsprout, but it was "Super effective" against a Venonat. As you know, Bellsprout is Grass/Poison type and Venonat is Bug/Poison type, and both Grass and Bug type get 2X damage when hit by a Poison type move (in gen 1), so the order of Primary...
@DRE9592 ...type vs. Secondary type didn't determine which message was sent out. I was confused because, in both cases, there should have been no message sense the the hit should have been neutral 1X (due to Poison type doing 1/2X damage against Poison), but instead, I was getting two DIFFERENT messages. I figured that if the game was going to send an erroneous message at all, it would at least send the same message in this situation.
@CoZmo996 lol It was originally just kind of a joke, to lol at how Reece Benlier used a Pikachu, but he doesn't really hate pikachu this much, it just makes for a funny LP. Or maybe he does I don't know
Haha.. It actually depends. Yellow version's Pikachu actually does hold a special place in my heart... (although admittedly, most of the time I played through Yellow, I'd just trade him to Red/Blue later in the game and evolve it to Raichu). My hatred for the yellow rat has more to do with how everyone else LOVES it, while I see it for what it is... a below-average (before they gave it the Light Ball) and not-really-cute pre-evolved Pokemon.
The reason why double kick isn't very effective against spearow is because in the first gen pokemon games, even attacks that are strong against one of the types of a pokemon but isn't strong against flying type means it will be not very effective. It's the same thing with grass attacks against gyarados
Fighting moves are always not very effective against pokes with the flying type, even if they were part normal, it's just a problem with the game. Also, bug type moves were supereffective against grass/poison types as well, even though they should be normal damage. I think bug was also supereffective against the ghost/poison types for some reason, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
TBH I cant stand the horrible graphics of Pokemon Yellow. I used to play Pokemon Blue/Yellow when I was around 12 and I loved them, but now it just seems bad.
But I enjoy your narration TKN, so thats the only reason I'm watching it, basically :)
Don't judge a game by its graphics! Some of the best games ever have poor graphics due to be older. Its the gameplay that makes the game, NOT the graphics!
@morpheas768 But pokemon Black's unnecessary continual battle motion leaves the pokemon with aweful blocky graphics-- almost as bad as gen 1 even though gen 1 is 16 years older than it!
@DRE9592 You mean that there is the common "staircase effect" because there is no anti-aliasing, like in many modern games. And of course AA is not supported by Nintendo DS's hardware. That means that basically most (if not all) 3D rendered games do have that graphics "issue", if you wanna call it that.
The developers could have added some filters to fix that, but we all know that these things do more harm than good on 3D games.
Pokemon Black/White's graphics are far more superior. True fact.
@morpheas768 But pokemon Black's unnecessary continual battle motion leaves the pokemon with aweful blocky graphics-- almost as bad as gen 1 even though gen 1 is 16 years older than it!
@TheKillerNacho i feel the same way nacho for example i have been suggested to play golden sun so many times in the past just because of its "superior graphics" but compared to really old games like pokemon and megaman, the gameplay was just simply inadequate
Why is Double Kick not very effective? The same reason that Ice Beam against Lance's Gyarados is super effective (judging by what I've heard anyways).
when a move is considered for super-effective in Yellow, the base that off of one of the pokemon's types, not both. and why didn't buy the uber Magikarp in the PokeCenter D:
The episode you were talking about was episode 4 - "Challenge of the Samurai." Ash was challenged by a Bug pokemon user with a samurai fashion thing going. Ash's metapod used Harden which shattered the spikes on the samurai's pinsir's pinsir-claws. The samurai's other pokemon was metapod. They sat there using harden like idiots for a few minutes before being interrupted by a swarm of beedrills.
Yeah I know too much about this episode... it's because it's the first episode I saw as a kid.
Alakazam isn't that broken in the first gen - it can't do much against other Psychic-Types as it has no other attack types (bar tradebacks). The REALLY broken Psychic-Type is most definitely Mewtwo - it's not only stronger than any other Pokemon, it's stronger than any team not containing Mewtwo or Mew on its own.
Mewtwo was always Uber, even in Gen 1. Alakazam was top-tier in Gen I due to its ability to special wall and sweep. It may not have had other attack moves than Psychic, but it could stall pretty much any Special attacker with Recover (and even some physical Pokes with Reflect) then wither/annoy things to those things it couldn't simply Psychic (Toxic, T-Wave, Seismic Toss).
Not even in Yellow is it that good. Late-game, it simply becuase frail, powerless, and overall useless. Not to mention it seems to have a slow-learning EXP to level ratio which means other pre-evolved Pokemon outgrow it.
Since the beginning of time, I never bought any store items but repel and solo'd every game with my starter. Seeing people use more than one is just weird. You freak. D:

@TheKillerNacho like Earthbound possibly one of the best games of ALL time of ALL time!!!
mariovssonic2 1 year ago
@TheKillerNacho I know but, I'm a nerdy gamer who appreciates good graphics quality on games, and I love playing titles like Crysis, Metro 2033, etc
I cant help it really, especially when I'm playing Pokemon Black currently :/
morpheas768 1 year ago
@morpheas768 But pokemon Black's unnecessary continual battle motion leaves the pokemon with aweful blocky graphics-- almost as bad as gen 1 even though gen 1 is 16 years older than it!
DRE9592 11 months ago
@DRE9592 You mean that there is the common "staircase effect" because there is no anti-aliasing, like in many modern games. And of course AA is not supported by Nintendo DS's hardware. That means that basically most (if not all) 3D rendered games do have that graphics "issue", if you wanna call it that.
The developers could have added some filters to fix that, but we all know that these things do more harm than good on 3D games.
Pokemon Black/White's graphics are far more superior. True fact.

@TheKillerNacho i feel the same way nacho for example i have been suggested to play golden sun so many times in the past just because of its "superior graphics" but compared to really old games like pokemon and megaman, the gameplay was just simply inadequate

@TheKillerNacho lol thats why my brothers hate Minecraft, you heard of it? I wish my gold version was broke, can't save.

@Fuzzlekinz ya if you do it in box he won't follow you anymore but won't like you anymore slowly

@Fuzzlekinz
Yeah, you could technically just put it in the Box (or trade it).

hit puberty at 10? lol.....I didn't hit puberty until I was 13
JoshMcRay 1 year ago 3
@JoshMcRay Some people start puberty younger than others. I started at around 11.
MrFluffyRedGyarados 1 year ago
@JoshMcRay
Some starter earlier. Ash is supposed to be like 15 by now and he's never reached it.

Why is Double Kick not very effective? The same reason that Ice Beam against Lance's Gyarados is super effective (judging by what I've heard anyways).
Matkin222 1 year ago
im not sure if it changes in gen 3 or 4 but in 1 and 2 even if it is normal and flying it is not very effective

Enjoying this playthrough!! BTW, are you excited about Pokemon Black & White??
ipodluigi505 1 year ago
It wasn't a neutral hit because in Gen 1 there is no two type neutrality. Hope you understand what I mean. Only one type counts in the math there.
tobitobide 1 year ago
when a move is considered for super-effective in Yellow, the base that off of one of the pokemon's types, not both. and why didn't buy the uber Magikarp in the PokeCenter D:
hginct 1 year ago
you shoulda bought the Magikarp!

I think Not Very effective has higher priority than Super Effective.
They don't cancel each other out.
I think.

LightningLord2 1 year ago
@LightningLord2

Why do you keep hating pika, true it's quite a bad pokemon but in pokemon yellow it's quite good
Xapheion101 1 year ago
@Xapheion101
Not even in Yellow is it that good. Late-game, it simply becuase frail, powerless, and overall useless. Not to mention it seems to have a slow-learning EXP to level ratio which means other pre-evolved Pokemon outgrow it.
TheKillerNacho 1 year ago
@TheKillerNacho I guess, but it's better in yellow then it is in red/bule

Since the beginning of time, I never bought any store items but repel and solo'd every game with my starter. Seeing people use more than one is just weird. You freak. D:

@Iced1992 how is it weird to use more than one pokemon? there's 6 slots and PC storage for a reason...

Haha, I hear you! My first time playing through Pokemon Red, I basically soloed the game with Charmander (well, most of the game it was Charizard).

@TheKillerNacho Fire starters all the way. :3 Disappointingly, they nearly always get fighting secondary. :(
