hey guys, i bought this cam about 2yrs ago.......just when it came out.......i got extra batteries for it....about 6 i think...anyhoo its got a usb line which can connect to a outside source for power.........not the pc though [it says not to do that].....it records extremly well.......i travel alot between the usa , eroupe and the west indies,....this is my choice of what a hi def cam should do.............i have since added it into my lineup of simule video recordings[wide area

This video sold me on to the Zi8. I like the external microphone input as I shoot guitar demo videos and mic'ing amplifiers with high quality microphones are essential. Amazon as of 9/27/10 has the Zi8 for $125. Just placed an order :)

i have the zi8 but i can not upload to youtube, goes and takes the entire software from kodal and downloads it and it take about 20 min to download a 4 minute video on facebook, anyone know why or what i can do?

Might or might not be helpful to those who are thinking about getting this camcorder, but if you go on my channel and watch any of my HD videos, they are filmed with the Zi8. It's all parkour so you can see what filming sports/moving subject looks like if thats what your interested in. I have also used a fish eye lens to get a wider angle, high recommend the lens too.

Thanks for the video. Any chance you know if when powered with DC, if the video/audio signal can be read realtime by a laptop (iMovie)? I used to be able to get a realtime signal from my MiniDV cam over FireWire.

The reason for the zoom on the Zi8 is that it doesn't actually have optical zoom. It's digital zoom, which can't really be done smoothly. It's cropping pixels and enlarging, however you swing it. It's got a lot of pixels to play with, but the way it works, it has to jump at each step. Great overview though.

@scotthemedic this is true, but there are definitely cameras with smoother digital zoom than the zi8. Zooming on the zi8 is simply unbearable.

@LordoftheReef Thx, can you set it to record continuously for like half an hour or more or does it automatically shut itself off if you don't manually interact with it for a length of time. I heard that it will shut itself off automatically if you don't touch the menu buttons at least once every 15 minutes or so (to preserve the battery - but i want to hook it up to a tripod and a/c). Regarding the Zoom. I just purchased mine yesterday from best buy and the zoom works smoothly, unlike the display models that i've tested. So I'm assuming Kodak had resolved the issue of the choppy zoom, unless I just got lucky with mine. hah! The red light still stays on when recording but just put a piece of black electrical tape over it. problem solved.

but the zi8 has no flash for taking pics,and high end is 12mg or so stills.the zi8 is geared to video only.the stills are like 5mg? sony has the lame webbie,but they'll come out with something to kick the zi8 soon.
