  • Pretty cool that DARPA could get something like this built, but I'm wondering tho' if is more efficient or better in any way than a rotary wing solution. I've got no problem with the government spending money on basic R&D, but practical advantages over existing systems should be a result of the research. How much did we spend on this program?

  • Another breakthrough! Quite impressive!

  • WOW

  • pretty impressive

  • so that's how a colibri got in romania

  • @tylerdurden666able I bet that's true

  • Where can I buy one!

  • You should change the material into a soft semi-permeable fabric. The sound is a giveaway.

  • fly, NAVi, fly! the fate of the forest, nay, the WORLD, depends upon thee!

  • This is the most stupid military project I've seen in my life

  • ..search for "Mini RC Micro Toy Helicopter" in youTube

  • It's like a toy I can buy for my children. This is not "nano" at all, it is (at most) "mini". From an usability point of view.. in what this is different to a Mini Helicopter?

  • Real life Quidditch anyone???

  • dream it, built it, show it to the world so the chinese can steal it.

and then the chinese will put trojans in to the cpu and sell the cpu back to us using our money they got from buying our bonds.

  • What if you apply IR Technology and laser targeting systems - for Precision strikes. ?!

Im guessing that was the initial plan.

  • @Peaceinlifenowar cause there are so many humming birds in Afghanistan?

  • @rrss213 Did you get my point?

  • @Peaceinlifenowar nope, sarcasm is difficult to perceive via text

  • I love science.

  • A stalkers best friend...

  • yeah, that's cool. they're also playin with artificial muscle that expands/contracts in response to an acid/base, for full scale winged craft and fish-like submarines...

  • @stopYOURdumshyt link?

  • SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

  • good luck china, alot of trial and error

  • I don't understand why they didn't adapted a toy helicopter, it's stable, cheap, you can replace it easily... all you have to do it's research and develop better batteries. Military are currently using unmanned planes the size of a toy succesfully. This is too complex; if it's not autonomous, I don't see why a toy size helicopter shouldn't be a better choice.

  • @solnegrolunaroja Helicopters are obviously human-maid and instantly recognised as drones. Hummingbirds on the hand occurs naturally in the wild and are more suitable as spy drones.

  • @LiouTao I see. But I think flies or moths would be easier to imitate. There is a robofly in development by two or three laboratories right now from some time ago.

  • @solnegrolunaroja Those are actually harder to make. Hummingbirds are already very difficult to imitate for its small size as well as flight mechanics, moths and flies would become near impossible at the moment. You need to make the hummingbird before you can make the moth and the fly.

  • @LiouTao Well, on second thoughts that's true! :)

  • @LiouTao, I bet you I can recognize this loudly plastic piece of crap with my eyes closed

  • @SrYanocano001 It obviously still need more improvement and research, but the breakthrough here is the flapping mechanism is down.

Also, that's if you hear it, if you don't hear it or notice it, then you can't recognise it.

  • amazing

  • krass :D

  • darpa=skynet

  • con tutti i miliardi che hanno riescono a fare solo quasto?!?!?! ci riesco io con 20 euro in una settimana...bhà

  • If you believe this I've got some towers for you 9-11 revisited.Come on DARPA tell us how you internally guide people using artificial intelligence! How you make their spirits leap from their soul's building while you break them down and then project guidance upon them. Tears us down and then rebuild us in as weapons capable of holding violence. Who wants to buy these design plans?

  • Constantly fighting and reversing its own inertia of the wings? Battery life cant be too great, no?

  • Put a gun on it, and call it a day:)

  • You can't make people think it's a bird with THAT noise...

  • Next step: Make it so that it's not audible from a mile away.

  • When the criminals/terrorists shouts who's cutting the grass, you know you've been rumbled lol.

  • It is not nano.. A fly is nano. A fly with solar cells that is charging it battery (lands when no more battery), have a GPS to navigate from a programmed path (Aoutopilot) and have a on board camera to send picture. IS the way of the future! I saw one on the X-files show ones!

  • Maybe we'll be able to buy one with our new poverty-level wages after the military buys it.

  • Looks like a manhack

  • 6 añitos para diseñar esa basura tecnologica, que pena dan los cientificos actuales, donde quedaron aquellos grandes cientificos del III Reich....

  • I like the SpyAgent music.

  • In your face Jesus

  • Shotgun every humming bird that comes near your window, Inventor you are excellent in your work but why are you with the people that hate us being free?

  • ok, but did you have to put the soundtrack to TERMINATOR in it?

  • @captainpiccard This music is from Terminator? Which track is it? I was wondering where it came from.

  • @frongjumping no, but sounds like it... to the purposes of my joke, i inferred it was from terminator, but i dont believe it really is. sounds like library music, specially when you consider it's really a 20 second loop...

  • @captainpiccard LOL Never mind, then. It's still a pretty cool track, though, even if it does loop like that. I've been known to listen to stuff on loop for long periods of time, so I guess that wouldn't bother me much.

  • lol amazing !

  • Anything that comes from DARPA and looks like this will undoubtedly be used for purposes bereft of any morality.

  • Dream it, build it, show it to the world so the Chinese can steal it...

  • @blogbat even your safety pin is coming from china , you christmastree.

  • @vineetaquarius Christmas tree? LOL! I've been called worse. Actually, I avoid the poison leaded kind that are made like crap, just like that regime.

  • @blogbat dont let ur contry outsource than ,

  • @vineetaquarius Japanese products are still superior and I'd buy them any day. ;)

  • @blogbat ya they are good , but whole world is going towards china beacause there is cheap labou , i dont know why the people dont want to work.

  • @vineetaquarius They were, but they're getting burned. A bad regime bears bad fruit, and the CCP regime out of Beijing will suffer for it. Meanwhile, there are a good number of struggling developing nations out there that have been undercut by China's artificial currency values and its illegal and abusive slave labor. Karma's a biotch, my friend. ;)

  • @blogbat ccp regime ? karma's bioch ? , i know they are but why other nations dont give work to their own people.

  • @vineetaquarius Not sure I follow your question. Are you asking what other nations excessively outsource?

  • @blogbat yes ,even i have not heard about the words you have used , see my last answer.

  • @vineetaquarius I think your boat has hit a sandbar, Vine.

  • @blogbat Why the Chinese?

  • @blogbat It will take the chinese years to develop this technology again. It takes skillful integration of control system technology and algorithms to keep flapping wing systems stable.

  • @blogbat the chinese have better things to do then to copy old technology

  • How long can it fly for before needing a recharge?

  • My only problem with this machine is that wouldn't you be a little alert if you heard a hummingbird that made a very loud grinding noise?

  • why not just stick a camera on one of those toy helicopters? why waste so much energy swinging the wings back and forth?

  • @funkyskunk2 Stealth...

  • @funkyskunk2 its for spying on us! you would recognize a chopper but that will be at your window looking at you and you wont notice. Dam you Americans really hate freedom, yet you profess the opposite

  • @jimdennett but the first reaction upton seeing a humming bird is "omfg look a humming bird!"

  • @funkyskunk2 This thing has much better maneuverability than a toy copter or even a real copter lol

  • Why the hell did they pick THAT music?

  • As far as government programs go, for a finished, polished product like this in just 6 years this was a pretty good investment. If the price is right this has applications in police work and search and rescue too. Good work.

  • you swear there tring to invent something that already invented like 10 years ago

  • Very awesome. If anyone else is working on any cool UAV designs, I have a few sketches to donate to your cause. Might be intriguing, including a humming bird type design I once came up with. Find me online, shoot me an email.

  • Whats the current distance or sustained flight before the battery runs out?
