Both Ritcher and Helten r ranked in the top 8, for the 100 metre sprinters in the world in 1975, as is Andrea Lynch of Britian and Irena Szewinsaka. I have the handbook for the Montreal games which show the ranking (1975) for all events to be run at the games.
I'm pretty sure it was Heidi Rosendahl but I can't be sure. She competed against Mary Peters in the heptathlon and lost but got her gold in the relay. Quite an achievement given how dominant Stecher was at these games.
Annegreth Richter was one of the few West Germans that did well against the East. I remember hearing about a west german heptathlon girl that ran the final leg in the womens 4:100 relay against Renate Stecher. Everybody believed Stecher to win but the west german won. I think it was in an olympic final. Anyone remembers? - She had glasses and was rather short as I recall. Thnx for uploading these amazing clips 5399.
Was Richter's gold in Montreal considered a surprise? Her improvement (no judgement) from '72 was quite stark considering she was the same age as Stecher. Her technique here looks very 1950ish.
She never had much of a profile in that era and I'd be interested to know how she was rated in that era of the 70s. Did she do much after Montreal?

Both Richter and Helten improved out of sight for the 76 olympics, Helten set the WR in june 76 11.04, Which Richter beat in the Montreal semis 11.01.The final was a lottery as there were four false starts before they got away, The first start which was clean had Raelene Boyle well in the lead at 40m, but apparently the fault was caused by a electricity fault at the exact time the starter shot the gun.
That's such a shame. She definitely deserved better. I'd love to see the footage of the final. It's about the only one I haven't seen and was a great field with the likes of Ashford (at the start of her career) and Boyle in it.
Ritcher's world ranking in the 100 meters are as follows 7th in 72, 5th in 73, 5th in 74, 4th in 75, 1 in 76, 3 rd in 77, 2nd in 78, 5th in 79 - ;so she hardly improved out of sight for the 76 games !
Boyle was the biggest drug cheat that ever lived, her drug of choice was heroin.

Had Richter, Helten and Rosendahl benn East germans I am sure that they would have been accused of doping.
If Stecher was doped up and running 11.0, then there is also the possibility that Richter and Helten were doped up running 11.0

the unusual combination of power and elegance made renate stecher a true great
