I have a real Dobro, no the strings are not too high to play in a normalfashion. There is a difference in a roundneck and squareneck Dobro. Squareneck is strung high and played across the lap, a roundneck can be played with a slide or as a regular acoustic but it is no less a Dobro.
dont worry about how expensive the guitar is mate, the dobro i used cost me about £250, it doesnt make it any less bluesy, in fact playing something is more bluesy if anything :P
i've got some videos of delta blues slide licks that i've done on my profile if want to give some stuff a try :D
Give yourself some credit Bro! You are rockin' that rogue!!! If you feel like a cool sound try findin' the heaviest strings you can and play it in Open C....
Hey Mojo, first many thanks for sharing your talent and enthusiasm with us on YouTube! As a struggling slide player, I'd really like to see a bit more of your "three chord" treatment for some dobro licks!
Glad to have answered the question. Some musicians out there find it easy to play slide in standard tuning - the great, late Duane Allman comes to mind. Somehow, even I tried, I can't make it work :) So Open D it is for me!
I am not sure I understand your question... the physical frets are the same. If you are asking about where I fret the guitar and the notes that come from it, then the answer would be because I am not playing in "standard tuning" but in Open D tunning. (DADF#AD instead of EABGDE...) let me know if I failed to answer the question correctly! :)

Dobro is a brand, not a guitar style. At least originally...
