I think Willia DeFoe could pull off a good Lon Chaney Movie, he is a versitile actor, and In my mind he kinda resembles Chaney, Lon Chaney is probably one of my greatest heroes of acting, I would love a movie of his life to come out
haha! I just had to write this down after hearing your narration on "man of a thousand faces". Indeed I could never understand why the make-up artists of the movie did not pay more attention to accurately recreate the real look that Chaney brought to his movies, but Cagney was the best choice at the time to play the part (considering how typecast he was after being in all those gangster movies). He was expressive and sensitive when it came to this interpretation of Chaney's life!
hahahaha! My goodness, you videos are so funny!!! My compliments for making these reviews!! I loved your opening song (you might have to work in the future to record a better sound quality of your voice, as a narrator, for there are moments when it's a bit difficult to understand what you are saying). But other than that, I love these videos and your humour! Oh, by the way, it would also be a good idea for you to incorporate the title and date of the movie vers that you are talking about ;-)
Once I get past his lack of physical resemblance to Lon Chaney, I really like Jimmy Cagney's portrayal. It's easy to tell that he had a tremendous amount of respect for Chaney's work and really wanted to do it justice, and I think he did. The film as a whole isn't fantastic, but it's certainly enlightening and enjoyable.
Yay spinoffs! The “voice lesson” at the beginning cracks me up. Wow, I never would have thought of a Burton/Depp Lon Chaney biopic, but that would make me so happy. Much happier than seeing their interpretation of POTO. I just can’t see Depp as Erik, but I can see him as Chaney. I would like to see them do Jekyll and Hyde the musical, but that’s a bit OT. And Mexican resting phantom… um, not sure what to say. *joins in the chorus of insane laughter*
Back in the day I read an interview in Filmfax magazine with Ron Chaney (great-grandson of Lon Chaney Sr) and he said that the producers of "Man of a Thousand Faces" needed someone to be the villain so Cleva was unfairly chosen. Ron knew Cleva when he was a child (she was 16 years old when she gave birth to Creighton/Lon Jr.) and said she was very hurt by how she was portrayed in the film, as a lot of aspects were fictionalized.
The ending is awesome, but I can't for the life of me understand why people are such sycophants for Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. They're talented sure, but in my opinion, they're really over-rated.
I am still quite wondering what the hell DePalma was on...seriously, I KNOW "Battle of the Planets" didn't hit our shores in the US until 4 years after that...though he looks like an evil version of one of those characters...
But I think my gripe is that it strayed so much from the original story, as it seems he was truly more concerned with making a satire of popular music than a modern version. (TBC, next part)
thanks for another review...I searched but I couldn't find, so I have to ask? Did you by any chance do the reviews of Labyrinth (1986)? I think it's very Phantom-like!
Man, Cleva's a jerk. If her child was deaf, it'd still be able to do normal things like parenting and holding a job. My own mother is deaf and I hadn't had a bad childhood because if it. Heck, I know a deaf family with their own construction company!
OK,I know this will come off as a total cliche',which is why I tried not to say it when this was first uploaded, but It has stuck with me since,& I have to say it! About the 1st Mrs.Lon Chaney,WTH? Seriously,I can't think of many things as amazingly wonderful as deaf mute in'laws!I know I can't be alone here. Please don't think that I'm making light of this condition,my in laws are a "case in point".
THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU 4 ALL the AWESOME reviews,I really enjoy them all!
A new Phantom film should be made with either Richard Roxburgh or Ralph Fiennes as the Phantom, Anne Hathaway as Christine and Patti LuPone as Carlotta.
Yeah, though I love Burton and Depp, I'm not sure they'd be the best choice for a Phantom flick. I doubt it would have much resemblance to the book by the time Burton played with it. He might do better with Kay's book since it has freakshows and foreign lands which he could have great fun with...and it would focus on a male misfit, his specialty.
Anyways, I agree, a Burton bio of Chaney, could be interesting.
Hey Pr, do you plan on reviewing Dario Argento's Opera (I think it's called Terror at the Opera in some countries)? I just saw it and was shocked at how good it was!
I'm not kidding, after Chaney it's one of, if not the single best movie to be inspired by Leroux's novel! It's so good that I totally forgive Argento for his shitty attempt at a direct adaptation.
Ah Darkman! Awesome movie! You know, I think Sam Raimi would be the perfect man to direct a POTO movie inspired by the original novel. He knows exactly how to effectively combine horror, humor and melodrama.
"On Thursday, Lloyd Webber will gather folk at Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket (home of Phantom Of The Opera) to announce what this page told you several months ago: that Ramin Karimloo will play the Phantom - although for a while in Love Never Dies he's a mysterious figure known as Mr Y who runs the Phantasma funfair attraction on Coney Island where the action, set in 1907, takes place."
Funny... but when Lon Chaney's wife was talking about not wanting his baby it reminded me of the 1986 remake of The Fly when Geena Davis finds out she's carrying Brundlefly's baby.
I just read the synopsis for the Chaney biopic. All I could think was "Geez, woman, get a grip."
i'd like to see that lon chaney biopic, i bet that OTT scene with Mrs. Chaney was written to show how chaney gave such a great performance in POTO, how he could relate to the character.
Amen to the Lon Chaney movie with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton! I would love to see what they'd do with a movie on Lon's life. Burton would be a great director and Johnny would portray Lon amazingly, I think.
I saw an unscripted interview where they were both asked if they could work with any actor, living or dead, who would it be, and Lon Chaney's name was the first name Johnny and Burton both mentioned, so clearly they are both Chaney fans. :) Would LOVE to see what they'd do with that movie.
I have a download of the Wishbone episode. If you one day have a sudden urge to review it, I'd be happy to send it to you.
Anyway, thanks so much for that glimpse into Phantom spin-offs. I've been wanting to watch that Lon Chaney movie for sometime, but it looks a little bit too...melodramatic for me.
Do you think when they made The Man Of a Thousand faces they were trying to make it funny or serious cause I laughed pretty hard! & the wrestling the POTO was hilarious too.
This is really great! Its nice to see more spinoffs of "The Phantom of the Opera". I do have to disagree with you a bit on "The Fly" being a spin-off of that. It has some elements from it, but overall its completely different. I mean Erik for one, may have been born deformed, but he remained human whereas with Andre Delambre (or Seth Brundle, if you've seen the 1986 remake) was made into a mutant hybrid when his machine spliced his genes with a fly that accidentally got stuck inside the machine.
Oops. Didn't see this. Well I sent you Phibes for nothing then. I wish I had the equipment to load Phantom of the Ritz onto You Tube. I think they only ever made a VHS of it, because that's all I ever found. You might get a used copy on eBay. I bought one brand new from a seller on Amazon so you might find it there, but really it's a horrible film. It reminds me of a made for TV film, like the Disney Channel does. Hey like Phantom of the Megaplex! : )
The Nickelodeon show "Are You Afraid of the Dark" the episode called Tale of the Last Dance. It's about a mutant who haunts a high school, falls for a violin player and will stop at nothing to make her his love. There's even a Raoul-like character who is the boy friend of the Christine-like character that you really end up hating because he falls asleep at her recital! What an ass! Lol! It's on youtube if you want to watch it.
Because they are planning to make the ability to download videos someting you have to pay for in the future, hence they need to ban anything that lets you get it for free. Incidentally, Realplayer allows you to download clips now and that still works (for now...)
@PhantomReviews Hey, if you're looking to download clips from Youtube, just take the URL of the video and go to zamzar.com. It'll convert the clips and send them straight to your email. :) There's also MediaConverter, but it doesn't work nearly as well as Zamzar.

The Mystery of the Wax Museum is a pretty decent movie. I was wondering if you were going to include it. When I saw that unmasking scene I thought of Phantom. Great job!
La Sombra del Murcielago is hilarious. I only watched the first part, but El Murcielago, the crazy wrestler, makes his assistant and sparring partner, Geraldo, kidnap other wrestlers so he can relive his glory days. But then they die so he demands better ones. He also randomly wants him to bring him a singer named Marta because "she loves music like I do."
LOL funny as hell. Yeah I don't know if you got my message. but there is a family guy one, I think a simpsons one, a oblongs one, and a aqua teen hunger force one as well.,
What? You never seen "Phibes"? I'll have to note you a link or two! The first film was great; the second was...okay. And personally, I love the film "Man of a Thousand Faces" with Chaney. Yeah, Phantom of the Ritz was just horrible. You would of had a great time reviewing that one, Phantom Reviewer. For example the Phantom is this crusty burnt up obese guy, supposedly due to stairiods(sp), and he kidnaps the owner of the Ritz girlfriend or wife or whatever and she kicks him in the nuts and he says something like "Nice try, baby, but they were brunt off in a fire years ago." It was just painful to watch and I haven't since I bought it.
