@pranhu I disagree. The piano gives better control of the dynamics and build crescendos or decrescendos. Both techniques bring the music to life and allow the pianist to incorporate his/her interpretation as well.
@chibikyuk i disagree. If you pay attention to her dynamics, you hear how beautiful it is on piano, how she is behind everynote when she strikes the key.
if you guys like this, a composer by the name of Charles Avison took some of the Scarlatti sonatas and turned them into Concerti Grossi and they are fantastic. Type Charles Avison into youtube to hear some.
Perfection. Interesting technique with firm, curved fingers, and a certain definiteness. I like very much but I'd like to hear her try some emotionally involved Rahmaninov, Chopin or Schumann.
I think my favorite lies in between her and Pogorelich. A tad more dynamic variation and SLIGHT metrical bend, but more so than the latter and less than the former. But both are excellent and both are Scarlatti.
Well, for me it is the most harpsichord-like version of this piano Sonata, originally composed for harpsichord :). I am not convinced that piano was invented for such a puropse. I mean this interpretation does not fully take advantage of the "abilities" of piano, like in other piano interpretations of this work. However... I am not sure whether it is bad, or just the opposite. Perhaps it is great to resist the temptation and to preserve the original tune... Intriguing...
she has more rhythmic variation (speeding up/slowing down) than any other pianist i have heard interpret this piece (or scarlatti in general) ... takes some getting used to, but i do believe it's intentional on her part. gives the playing a more jumpy feeling which at first could come across as shakiness but i think it's her interpretation of this ..
the scarlatti sonatas are so anoying... wait... keep reading... They are anoying because there are SOOOOO many! You couldn't possibly know them all! They are some of my favorite songs though... Whats also anoying is they are listed in 3 different catolog thingys... so this is sonata 1 in the kirkpatrick catolog... but it isn't number one in the longo catolog... grr... frustrating. I love scarlatti... and this pianist has talent!!!
@beryllium2 Kirpatrick's catalog starts with the Essercizi (published in 1738) and proceeds chronologically. Longo lumped the compositions together according to Key.
i was wondering if it's intentional or not .. it's especially pronounced towards the end, this jumpy out-of-synch left hand, to the (mostly) steady right hand ... i have concluded that it is intentional and gives a little bounciness to the performance that wouldn't otherwise be there with accurate timing.
Jesus, her precision and neatness and stil so musical .Her trills are unbelievable . Graceful, MUSICAL !and a good sound so rare with pianists her age. Pogo does wonders in this -but what fool would compare him with anyone ?
oh, I'm sorry! forgiven her for doesn't be Pogorelich. You know, she would likes to be Pogorelich but she still become herself in the pogorelich clon. IDIOT
@kiitoob - he plays it faster - and precisely, but this version is MUCH more musical. I don't care for Ivo really. OTOH, I could listen to this recording ALL DAY.
I can't say this she's bad. But I just don't like her way of playing. It looks like she wants to give it some subtlety, but it just works negative her way. You should hear Ivo...
You have such an excellent feel for the piano. You look awkward some times, the way you hunch, and the way you kind of wave your hands around when they stop doing things for a second. But the more awkward you look, the better. So, yeah.
Are u serious jess??Ivo Pogorelich is a master...He plays SCarlatti sonatas just...."perfect"....Absolutely great techique and sound..For me Ivo And Krystian Zimerman are masters of this instrument..
I don't agree. I find Racha Arodaky's take far more inspiring.
Unfortunately it's not on YouTube but you can hear a sample of her CD on Amazon. Try it. Her version is obviously more inspired and daring(less tame) than Pogorelich's and Koblar's.
yes, pogorelich is more crispy. Actually i find that she's copying him a bit in the trills and accents use. Also she plays exactly the same sonatas he had recorded... hmmmm...

In my opinion she plays this sonata too slow. It sounds better when it's quicker.

I agree that Irena is suited to this music. Her playing is so clear and well punctuated, with wonderful shadings in the right places.

that is strange ..all his songs sound much better in harpsichord version. piano wasnt meant to play for his song..

I didn't say that she plays bad, but it's my point of vue after 7 years playing the piano, and 5 playing harpsichord... =)
She plays very well, but by the harpsichord... There something so particular and so beautiful that you don't have by the piano...
But yes, she plays very well of course =)
It's what I think ^^

One of the best examples of the "let's imitate the harpsichord" school. Supreme technique and flat dynamics (on purpose).
