I think I'd most like to see a racing series with actual production vehicles... straight from the showroom, not prepared for racing at all. Unfortunately, I don't think there is one.

If manufacturers actually raced their production vehicles, they'd need to develop better safety systems for cars, more powerful engines and efficient engines, and of course there'd be work to keep down weight. And racing is quite hard on cars, so they'd have to work on reliability, too.

I get where you are coming from, but due to safety standards and the unbalanced performance nature of bone stock cars, this never works well. This is why race series always have weight limits and hp limits and not to mention safety standards.

@Colleptic Well, of course the drivers would be wearing crash suits and helmets, that's a given, but the point would be that these are the best cars the manufacturers built, so it would really be a showdown.

And it doesn't have to be fair, because it would be car vs car more than driver vs driver. Only regulation being it has to be showroom spec. And not a purpose-built race car. It would pretty much be the world's biggest comparison test.

@gogmorgoaway I do not really disagree with the idea, just the reality of it. Most companies are in it to win. If they know X-manufacture has the winning car, why would they enter? You would have the same winners all the time. I am not against the idea at all, but there is a reason races like this are always armature-level and grass-root events. Even the old Trans Am series' cars where quite modified to race....

Yeah, you really would almost need to make the manufacturers legally required to participate, you're right, although there would be a "see if we can beat them" factor to it.
