Atreides had allied with the Fremen by the time they got defeated. Worms aid the Fremen when they call, so really the worm was just picking up (down) a valuable crest the Atreides lost in the chaos of routing, for safe-keeping.

Not that I've ever known of anything to come out of a worm's mouth, only come in... guess the crest would have to come out the other way. Then again, if they eat tanks, means they can digest them, and if they digest tanks...
