Watching this I keep trying to imagine working with my sister non-stop and touring around the world with her (we're just like the Carpenters, in the sense that we're the only children and she's four years younger than me). Honestly, we wouldn't last a day! I am amazed at how they made it work for so long and how they still managed to have a close relationship. Obviously there was dysfunction, but it's still really impressive.
I told Randy Schmidt lets go on National TV & I will tell you everything you left out of Little Girl Blue- People are really beginning to understand that this gentlemen is making money off of Karen's misfortune. Randy puts on his little suits, goes out signs books, hasen't donated anything towards eating disorders, he has even talked Karen's friends into talking to him, it's on video- However did anyone notice the peolpe who count the most remained LOYAL! Point made!
even though karen had the sickness, richard was looking pretty thin himself. I know a lot of it had to do with him being under stress and maybe the drugs. but he looks just as bad as she did. This is just my opinion, try not to bash me for it okay?
@HoshiChun The more we learn about eating disorders, the more it looks like they're caused by a complex set of genetic responses to starvation, psychology and environmental triggers. Richard and Karen may have shared similar metabolisms and therefore experienced similar responses to stress (loss of appetite, OCD, feelings of elation from starvation, lack of hunger pangs, etc). Genetically susceptible individuals can develop disordered eating patterns after just a few week of calorie restriction
she was just fabulous. she could sing the phonebook and make it sound great. why didnt she know what she had? why couldnt she just be happy and still be here today? what a wonderful and sad legacy all at the same time.
They never stopped to smell the roses, perhaps it did take its toll on Karen's and Richard's health. The quest to remain at or near the top of the music charts not only affected them physically, but mentally as well.
@roscoegino She wasn't adopted, she was their first cousin. Karen had a really hard time dealing with the fact Richard was dating their cousin. When Richard and Mary started a family they had to have blood tests to make sure there would be no genetic problems.
@roscoegino Yes. He didn't marry her until after Karen died, but they were in a relationship before that, and Karen was "livid" (to be fair, though, she hated all his girlfriends.) Richard finally exclaimed to Karen that they had tests done and could have normal, healthy children. Fortunately, the kids turned out fine, and in the end, that's all that matters.
Regarding Phil Ramone's statement about Karen being bothered by reviews she read which mentioned her weight, that she said "But it never leaves me," it would appear she had become obsessed with it.
Although I have the impression that Karen and Richard loved performing, it's true what Richard says about their success being derived from making albums. Unfortunately, they toured so much that there was hardly time to make the albums. It's sad to think of what we missed.

Wow, this is so informative. I didn't know that "Goodbye To Love" was inspired by a Bing Crosby movie.

Was Joan Pennisi the cousin Joan that Agnes adopted??
eclecticfire73 3 years ago
I know that Richard's wife was a cousin that was adopted. Not sure about Joan.

She isn't adopted. That is a misconception.

@antefe ouch.

@roscoegino Joan, the cousin in this documentary, was raised by Agnes and Harold Carpenter. Mary is the cousin that Richard married.

@arfies he married his blood cousin???
