PS3 Red Light and Three beeps

I originally had the Yellow light of death, opened up my PS3 and reflowed the solder. While I had it taken apart I thoroughly dusted it out, I replaced the thermal pads, cleaned all the old thermal paste where it was applied and applied new thermal paste, it was basically like brand new aside from the solder reflowing. Worked for about 6 months with very minimal use (bought a slim so was mainly using that) and now it's doing this. They don't make them to last like they used to that's for sure.

Now it does the 3 beeps/flashing red LED thing. Just got off the phone with Sony, they will exchange my original 60GB Fat for a 120GB Slim for $99.

Im from Ireland. Just letting everybody know that my Playstation 3 went like this 1 year ago. Just had to get it fixed so pissed off not having one. A shop called Tech Pros fixed mine for 60 euro. Hope this helps anybody else in a similar situation.

@uma1rkhan if your ps3 still works then thats entirely ok. the whole 3 beep idea is the ps3's way of saying i need to restart myself. I guess in the earlier models ( 60gb ) that was the main reason the broke down, that the forced restart fucked itself up. Just a theory but your fine

then clean off old paste apply new and reasemble. about 1 hours work and £2 for paste

you will need to take apart your ps3 and re-float the board by heating it especialy the cpu and the gpu use a heat gun around 500 degrees warm the board for a few minutes all over dont stay in one place too long then hold the gun over the cpu and gpu for about 5 mins this will melt the solder holding them. this will mend any dry or split solder. do not touch or move board when it is hot

let it cool down for 15 mins

the yellow light problem is a overheating problem. could be one of a few things. heatsink paste is not doing its job dry solder or split solder. both of these can be fixed for just some time and patience and new heatsink paste.

have ps3 on standby tv turned on press and hold the power button on ps3 untill u hear 1 beep followed by 2 beeps together. this brings up a menue on ur screen on there it gives u the option to restore settings back to factory and also file restore hope this helps.

@wurble yeah thats the same as ylod I think you need to send it off to sony if your still covered by the maufactures warrenty. if not then either go and get a new ps3 if you can either that or try and get the one you have repaired, that is if you want to keep playing a playstation console if not then buy something else.

I've found out what it is. three beeps and flashing red light every time when turning on the ps3 is highly likely to be a hard drive corruption, which makes a lot of sense as I got this problem after a short power cut. I guess the ps3 was saving to the hdd as it happened. my ps3 is well out of warranty, and I did a self repair of YLOD about 4 months ago. I knew it was going to fail at some point, just thought it'd be another YLOD, rather than hard drive corruption.

mine did the same thing, i took out the hdd and formatted it wit a pc, put it back in ps3 and reformatted it then it worked, but for only a few hours, so i sent it in, with the replacement plan from k-mart. they replace the hdd and it works fine, an they also sent it back broke and in peaces, after a few mouths of fighting with them on the phone they put me a used case on it, that didnt look good but worked.

I only get the 3 beeps when I shut off the system after a game freezes (which only seems to happen with TES Oblivion which is known as an excellent game, with excellent glitches).

If your PS3 was truly dead you would be getting a "yellow light of death."

There are many reasons for this issue you can try one of the solutions

1- Disconnect the ps3 from the power for around 5 min then switch it on.

2- Reset the ps3 by holding the power button for about 10 sec it will give two beeps then switch it on.

3- Reset the controller by pressing the small button in the back of the controller with small needle while the ps3 is off.

4- Change the power cord or check the power connections.

Try replacing your harddrive in the system and see if that helps. I did it to mine and now have a 200gb and it works fine when I power up. If that didn't help then you have a power board pcb that needs soldering.
