Did Duran typically touch gloves before each round with all his opponents?? Because I know he hated Leonard and Benitez.... I know Duran was at De Jesus's deathbed to hug him when he was dying of AIDS, just wanna know if that respect materialized b/c the dude was dying or if it was always there.
Guess I'm not as impressed as some in this column at Duran here. Yes, he certainly won (credit for that) and finished Dejesus off well at the end. Overall, though, it was more of a bounce-and-poke affair. I mean RD was the aggressor throughout, but I would've preferred a more aggressive aggressor! Some charges of unleashed fury, not just bounce-and-poke.
@TheGreatA Yeah this was a boxing masterclass by Duran. He truly was a master of all styles. He could brawl, he could box outside, box inside, swarm, counterpunch..... He was just brilliant.
@pnutbutrncrackers The fact that Duran could "bounce and poke" made him all the more dangerous, and this fight proved that Duran was the best fighter ever to box out of an aggressive stance, placing him more than a shade above Henry Armstrong in my view.
@pnutbutrncrackers that's a credit to his aggressive boxing ability! Duran is really unappreciated in the defense department. When in actuality he was brilliant defensive wise also; this fight is really a testament to how good DeJesus was; a very quick tricky fighter with quite a pop to his punches; particularly that left hook; Duran knows that.
@judaschongo I agree that DeJesus is definitely a quality boxer -- I see that here. And you're probably right that Duran's defensive skills are often overlooked.
I think a lot of boxing from the fan's point of view comes down to styles of fighting. Obviously many really like RD's style. A skilled, tough, tenacious opponent for sure. My own favorite was Thomas Hearns. Very different from Duran. The Hitman was a smooth, quick, skillful stalker with dynamite-like power. Super-exciting to me!
2) he was no longer managed by Ray Arcel who actually honed his boxing skills to what made him good
3) he fought that fight like an IDIOT and there was nothing of that Duran in that fight that made him the beast that he was at lightweight: he had no head movement, no lateral movement, he was fighting flat footed, he was arm punching....it's like he was begging to be fubared that night.
Yeah people act like Leonard was better cos he beat duran the the second time around - but the time they fought first, Duran's career shoulda been on the decline - he'd fought 12 years at lightweight!
Man Duran was a great craftsman of the sport, He could do it all, pressure, Box, Counterr punch, Angles! Check out the move 00:26 seconds too get off the ropes and counter. Great fighter.
I'd have too say the the best lightweights were Roberto "Manos de piedra" Duran, Aaron "the Hawk" Pryor, Henry Armstrong!! Sugar Ray Robinson never was a Lightweight, He fought some of his earlier fights when he was just starting out as that weight, But was a Welterweight! And he was something very special too watch, Pound for Pound, Those would have all been some of greatest match ups!
I unno if he couldve beat Robinson, they were almost the exact same kind of fighter, except Duran was more power oriented than Robinson, and both were great technical boxers. The main difference would be the size, robinson was 4 inches taller, and a vast height difference over duran would be devastating, look at the hearns fight. Duran should have never fought hearns
But Duran was well past his prime by the time he fought Hearns. Now the Duran who fought Leonard the first time IMO would have beaten Hearns on the cards and would have had a chance against Robinson.
Styles make fights. Hearns was always going to be too much size and stylewise for Roberto Duran. Doesn't detract from Duran's greatness...Roberto was at his best at lightweight, not welterweight.
@DannyA123 Duran was out of shape, old and not very motivated for Hearns. Maybe Roberto was intimidated...throw the Duran who showed up for the 1st Leonard fight in against Tommy at Welter and I'm not so sure Tommy is the winner. Duran fought one of the greatest welterweight fights vs Leonard 1. He would have beat any welter in history that night. Duran is an alltime great, no doubt.
@blite13, Hearns was ALWAYS going to be too much for Roberto. Too big of a size disparity and, besides, as you say welterweight wasn't really Duran's class. Roberto was in actuality a bloated lightweight by this time, albeit an extremely GOOD bloated lightweight. Don't have to sell me on Duran...he will always be one of my favorites.
It's been a real treat to be alive in the era of Duran. I have been a fight fan since I could speak. This guy was the king of his division at the time. All comers only respected him after the fight. His targets were always 12 inches beyond his intended ones;Tenacious.
Duran si fue un gran guerrero en el ring, el boxeo es un deporte para puros hombres, De la Hoya no tiene lugar en el boxeo, mejor hubiera sido que De la Hoya se hubiera puesto a practicar ballet.......
duran lo mejor..... amazing how he beat iran barkley at 160 pound, this is a real fighter never in his carrier said NO to anybody, not like this girls now that always talk about making money in shit...
Interesting to see what would have happened if either Leonard, Hearns or , Hagler fough Duran at HIS comfort zone in the 130's.
He fought all the youger and stronger fighters when they where in thei prime and he was well beyond his. STILL he beat many of them. An outstanding , skillfull fighter was Duran. I'm still amazed, but trying to figure out how in the world he was able to beat Iran Barkley !!
I agree 100 percent - a motivated Duran was a killer in the ring - and a decent human being outside ... I was reading just recently how Duran went and hugged Esteban Dejesus on DeJesus death bed ... Duran dominated Leonard in their first fight and I only wish Duran could have walked away after that Night and he would be remembered as the greatest fighter in any class of all time!!!
The Benitez fight was not even lightweight. Duran was already over his prime. We are talking lightweights, but now that were at the subject, when Benitez started losing, did he win another championship? No, but Duran did versus Iran Barkley, the man who owned Hearns.
Well u know he was drowning on drugs! Benitez a world champ at 17 yrs old!! Everything came to him way too fast! Go figure a kid a world boxing champion at 17! Duran did not n could not do!
@piritwintwoagain Too bad, Duran held the title for years, came up 2 weight classes and took care of Leonard who Benitez lost to. Not only that, Duran was 80 fights into his career at this point. If Benitez got lost in drugs....Duran had the same temptations and was a great fighter for DECADES, Benitez NEVER DID THAT.
@blite13 yeah too bad benitez beatup duran for 15 full rds! and even toyed with him in the last round! not bad for benitez who hardly trained and was always strungout on drugs! you know what duran never did ? he never beat benitez! lol!
I see what your saying here. The announcers cite punch, but it's the move Duran excecutes. He was as smart and as skillfull as they come....also at 0:27
Duran came out boxing in this fight. To me its his finest performance. Arcel and Brown had him stand back and box and be patient rather than walk into a lefthook counter like he did in the first two fights.
Duran tortured the body of DeJesus until Arcel told him to finish him.
Agreeing with everyone here--thanks for posting this magnificent fight. My only gripe, and it's beyond anyone's control, is the audio quality. i love the commentary, i just hate having to sit next to the speakers to listen along to the fight, this fight is fascinating on so many different levels!!
Impresionante Durán... le tomó un tiempo, pero aprendió que para ganarle a De Jesús no podía descuidarse tanto!

Duran lost to Hearns for several reasons:
1) middleweight was not his best weight at all.
