John Amos(the father). He was killed off because he pissed off some people who worked on the show(he was fired because of it). He and Esther Rolle(the wife) did not like the fact that the writers had made the JJ character the focus because they wanted to do meaningful stuff with the show and the writers in their opinions spent too much time coming up with silliness for JJ, a character that Amos and Rolle didn't think should have been the focus. Amos publicly criticized the show and was fired.

Esther Rolle left because she felt JJ was a bad example for kids. She felt that they were getting the impression that all that had to do was stand on the corner, clap their hands and shout DYN-O-MITE and be rich. She came back for the final season. Fortunatly, he showed some maturity the final 2 seasons. Especially when Michael was unruly and got arrested. He grounded Michael but later expressed regret at not being a better example as a big brother. That was from the episode, Junior the Senior.
