@LiveTheLimit they are a state operated agency and therefore have jurisdiction throughout the state and wherever the state has roads and property. its just like any other state police agency. It is uncommon however to find them off of the highways because if another agency has units stationed in that area they dont really NEED to be there.
@LiveTheLimit california highway patrol have jurisdiction over the whole state....not just the highways. They are even sometimes asked to patrol unincorporated areas of california that may not always have local police departments....so...yeah they can definitely be there.....
one day i watched LAPD put people in their squad car . they turned their backs and a girl jumped out the back window. the cops caught her and jacked her up good. Then about 5 minutes later the cops saw me and pulled up to me and started questioning me what i saw. I thought i was in trouble!! They just said any time force is used they have to do a follow up report. it was cool
hahaha...yeah I agree with you clof2001. Mr. Cameraman is a tough guy talking crap until the officer looks at him and tells him to turn his camera off... Smokey Bear.
@theshaza24 If getting filmed from across the street bugs a cop that much, either they don't have the temperment for a law enforcement job, or they have something to hide. That's the problem with a,lot of cops is the holier than thou attitude, and if you think a citizen excercising free speech or free assembly is being a nosy asshole, maybe u should take another civics class.
@neckarsulme Let me ask you this, how would you like to go to work EVERY day and know that if you even look at someone funny it's going to end up on YouTube and people who have not the slightest idea about law enforcement operations will try and tell you how to do your job?
It's nice to be able to do your job without constantly being scrutinized for things people are ignorant about. You clearly have never been around law enforcement before.
@theshaza24 There's enough cops fucking up on the job to justify people filming them doing stupid shit, the reason it's so prevalent now is that more media is available to catch people on both sides of the law doing things they ain't suppose to be doing. Cops are human and not infallible and make mistakes, so if someone films them on the street that's just a part of life. If u r in L.E. u need to have a thicker skin, and cops are not God.
@neckarsulme He wasn't telling him to stop filming. He was conducting a field investigation of a witness. If this guy had recorded the stop or the end of the pursuit, that's some good evidence in court, too. Please try again.
@neckarsulme At what point does the officer ask him to stop filming? He shuts the camera off on his own. The Officer just told him to "Come here" and asked his name.
@francismori7 Try again....The cop is a public official and the person filming is on public land. Using your logic, everyone entering a sports arena would have to sign a waiver to be filmed for the game to be televised. How about all the security cameras located on every corner....You get filmed without your consent every day, if you don't belive that look up at the street corner and see the cameras everywhere.
Why is it that emergency workers are the only employees that people bother to stop and record doing their job? I don't think I've ever heard of anybody taping the drive through worker flipping burgers, or an electrician twisting some wire ties together randomly.
@junkymagi It is not the average-joe's job to "Watch" them. That borders on harassment and interfering with their investigation. Sure, they do point guns at people, but it's what WE PAY them to do. We accept it and therefore, the possibility that it can be abused. They signed up, and are paid, to perform police duties, not to be "watched" and filmed. We do hold them to higher expectations, but they have rights and feelings like us and we wouldnt like people watching and filming us.
1. I do NOT accept the possibility of them abusing their powers.
2. Someone needs to be watching them so the power mad ones are controlled,
3. we, the people, may hold them to higher expectations and the court gives their word more importance than other people's word but when they do abuse their power, what happens? They get a slap on the wrist for things that would get a regular person thrown in jail, and if there's no video, they get away with it without punishment
Yes, by paying your taxes, you do accept it. While you may not accept it as moral, you accept it as a possibility. There is more of a chance that a citizen with a CCW will unjustifiably use their weapon, but do people film them? Do people film soldiers? 99% of the time, the police were justified in using force and that "slap on the wrist" is overkill.
@junkymagi I've been there. When someone gets hurt by police, its justified 99% of the time. That 1% isnt gonna change by harassing them, its gonna increase. You say you dont accept them abusing their powers. Police officers DONT accept you filming them. They didn't sign up for it, it isnt part of their job and every once in 5,000 times that a person films the police that he actually catches officers "abusing their power", they AREN'T. You wanna dispute that? You cant until you've been there.
@crownvicdude How many arrests a day are there? Hundreds? Thousands? Even if only one hundred a day were arrested, that's one person every single day being abused by those in power.
Public filming is legal and the cops swore to uphold the law so, yes, they did sign up for it.
You really think only 0.02% of the time someone filming catches a cop being abusive, but not really being abusive? *Looks over at the hundreds of videos of cops kicking and punching "suspects". Yeah, right...
@junkymagi Swearing to obey the law and becoming an unwilling star on a YT video are 2 different things. In the LE world, consequences of breaking the law are handled by IAB. People like you with cameras are in no position to judge what is and isnt police brutality. You dont even know what constitutes police force, nor does the video show you the entire situation. Less than 5% of vids labeled police brutality are. You are more likely to hurt someone than a cop, so film yourself.
hey wont become youtube stars? How about this tape? No brutality here or in 95% of vids police related on YT. And no, saying cops would stop getting caught is wrong. Most are caught by cameras that have been installed at facilities, anyway. The only thing filming them does is put the innocent ones in jail because the person taping has taken the whole thing out of context.
@crownvicdude Until they create a law that doesn't trample on the citizens rights and forbids the recording of officers in the field, people will continue to film them and continue to catch the bad cops being brutal.
They don't like it? Tough, as long as we don't break any laws, they have no say in the matter.
@junkymagi In the time it takes one to obtain footage of supposed police brutality, they could gather hundreds of tapes of definite civilian brutality. Also, while it isnt illegal to film a cop, it is if he tells you not to. Why? Because it is illegal to publish such film without the consent of parties being filmed. Thus, if the officer tells you to stop filming because he believes he might become an involuntary star on YT, you must comply.
@crownvicdude It is legal to film without permission in a public area,
No expectation of privacy if you are out in public.
What do you think photogs do when filming famous people? They don't get permission from the people being filmed and they sell that film to the highest bidder.
If it was illegal to film after being told to stop, there would be thousands of lawsuits in court over paparazzi films.
Oh, and you really think there aren't any people filming civilians when they do bad things?
@junkymagi Wrong. Actors/actresses DO have the right to sue, if they find out that the exact material photographers took were placed on the internet or in the way of the public eye. That is, given the material was RECORDED. Recording someone, such as the person here is doing, infringes upon multiple wiretapping/eavesdropping laws and can be a federal offense. People here in Illinois and 12 other states have been arrested for recording a police officer.
@junkymagi Have you ever thought stars WANT to be filmed? As I said, they could sue, but in very rare instances. This is because if something is being recorded, prior to you being on the scene, which is clearly the case at many celeb events, you are, by law, a willing participant in the recording.
uhhh oh someone was breaking the law on the freeway and got pulled over... its okay buddy you got a ticket and now bad mouthing the entire department...

@crownvicdude 5% of vids are labeled police brutality.
So, if we stopped filming, those 5% would stop getting caught because there's no proof they were being brutal.
If the cops do their job and keep their cool like their supposed to, they won't become youtube stars.
The ones that do become brutal on camera deserve to become youtube and eventually court room stars.
