Your voice breaks when the muscles in ur voice box expand - making ur voice deeper. It's more complicated than that - google it! You can tell it's gonna happen when ur voice sounds croaky, but doesn't hurt like a cold, I'm going through that stage.

Nah i don't think he had to do it for the show (Even if you're a guy it's pretty hard to make your voice squeak suddenly like that when you're talking). I think the script writers were taking advantage of the fact that his voice was breaking to make a funny show.
