  • Nice bro!! But the first hi hat figure you play, should be played with one hand to have THAT feeling :)

  • Berklee practice room?

  • groove one is more jazz-ish, and groove two is a bluesy beat. these drum beats are more common with americanized reggae:music that really incorporates rock drumming over actual reggae drumming. not that these beats are bad, but they're not "truly" jamaican. look up one drop drum beats and steppers beats.

  • wow....WOW

  • thanks for this man, used it to help me get a bit more of an understanding of

drums for my music production :)

  • I have that same bass drum, same color too, Birch Tama Starlassic, spaskling silver right?

  • Hey dummy white boy, who told you that shit?...

Reggae is an African beat , with the accent on the 3... not 2 and 4.

Go back to playing with your Xbox and stop corrupting reggae .

  • @phoenix11994466 You are saying reggae is from african, not jamaica? That's the first time I ever heard that. Interesting, I know lucky Dube is from Africa, but I am pretty sure reggae came from rock steady in jamaica.

  • @gleventhal Jamaica is situated in in the the Caribbean sea between North and South America. 250 years ago British slave traders use Jamaica as a staging post for slaves taken from Western Africa. They brought their music with them, which survives to this day... Yes I am saying ALL reggae beats originated from tribal African drum beats, which has been passed down since the dawn of time.. In fact ALL music originated from Africa...It's a well known fact. Google 'the origin of music'

  • @phoenix11994466 You said reggae is an african beat though, not that it originated from african beats.. I think reggae's distinct sound was created in jamaica, though perhaps some of the rhythms were played in previous african music, I have heard a lot of african music and nothing sounded exactly like reggae.

  • @gleventhal Correct , reggae's distinct sound evolved out of Jamaica, but all of it's components originate from African tribal beats. It's simply the way those components are assembled, which results in what we all know as reggae. When analyzing those components, one finds a heavy accent on the 3, rather than the 2 and the 4 which makes up most of western rock music. Also reggae is sometimes missing the 1 completely (also known as the 1 drop), which gives reggae that bouncing feel

  • where the hell are you playing, in war torn bosnia?

  • What are the technical details about that hi hat beat at 1:50? Can someone direct me to a song with that beat?

  • Use the bass drum on the 3 with the snare or cross-stick than it's reggae other than that you pretty much got it

  • If you do the hi hat part with one hand then the groove will really flow, try it.

  • Decent groove but it's not reggae. Where's the one drop???

  • @dubbsmalone Not all reggae grooves are one drop :) I have to admit though, I use one drop for about 90% of reggae tunes..

  • @mathowlett Dropping the beat on the 1, or providing that silent space, gives reggae it's bounce feel. Because without that space, it sure as hell ain't reggae, right?

In traditional African drum beats, you'll hear lot's of triplets... In fact, 3 beats to the bar, is often overlaid with 4 beats to the bar... This effect puts confuses the left hemisphere of the brain, and lulls it to sleep, allowing the right hemisphere (subconscious) to come out to play, causing a trance like state of mind

  • GUYS ISNT THE RIM SHOT SUPOZ TO GO WITH THE KICK Same time, AND DONT WE PLAY THE HI HAT WITH ! HAND>>>>????

  • hey bro you were good in your own way..however the track originally played by sly dunbar is played using 16 notes triplets on the hi hat..on the bass drum hes playing one three A one

  • hey bro you were good in your own way..however the track originally played by sly dunbar is played using 16 notes triplets on the hi hat..on the bass drum hes playing one three A one

  • Sorry brother - that hi-hat pattern is played with one hand. At least by every Jamaican drummer I've played with..

Other than that you do have the rhythmic elements right tho ! .. don't listen to the haters. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Your playing it wrong. The hihat is played with one hand, triplets!

  • guarentee you dont even play drums bro

  • hey selfsacrificial, how come you don't have any videos posted of you playing reggae beats? I mean if you could do it so much better then you should be posting videos, right? Until then I just have to assume that this guy is better than you and you're just a hater.

  • well u are supposed to do it with one hand. i understand i use 2 hands sometimes too

mostly for dub o california reggae

  • With reggae, it is backwards (most the time) Play the bass drum on the 2 and the 4 and the rim on the 1 and 3.
