  • geeze, she's a STUDENT, she's going to goof up.

  • say what you want trolls.... i could not get up and do what she did ....

  • @Rg1527 so true, I couldn't do it either. I would of been shaking.

  • She sounded pretty good on Cherokee , she just has a problem with slower grooves .

  • id beat

  • sympathy pains. hopefully she (or her kids or whatever) don't know about this video :-P

  • man he plays so good

  • She picks Cherokee of all tunes! Big respect to her, I wish I had her intonation, her skip beats are good man

  • Chick has no feel, terrible note choice

  • @aesopslyre I would say any feel she might have had, as well as not choice skill, before her date with Ray, died as soon as she got on that stage. That couldn't have been easy.

  • She's got little groove, but some nice licks.

  • I like that she's getting lost in 1st position in a blues, and as part of his instruction to her, he just starts ripping upper register blues licks in her face. Badass!!!

  • It takes a lot of courage to play for someone like Ray Brown. Kudos to this young lady. So much respect.

  • Girl did a nice job. Playing infront of the great Ray Brown being FILMED, well that needs some serious guts. Everybody is learning. Good job and nice video.

  • @Praclik22 for real. i would shit my pants. sure she sounds stiff. but shes obviously young and terrified.

  • poor girl was probably shitting in her pants... i bet she could swing 1000x better than that;;; it was ray FUCKIN' brown!!! lol

  • Hey people around , she didnt do the blues very well

i agree . but she was killin on cherokee.

  • I would poop my pants playing in front of ray brown. By the way, the jeune fille isn't that bad at all, I'm pretty sure she's scared terribly ^^

  • @Gabepaullikegirls Gotta keep in mind its gotta be harder to play in front of a legend like ray in this type of situation

  • what i would give to be in that girls spot right now, however, id probably be shitting myself as well

  • Ray Brown was the freakin' man. The best!!

  • 2:40!!!

  • so nice when he plays the tenths at 0:06

  • hah

I've watched these videos before 6 or 7 months and then the pupils seemed good to me, but now wow hah poor playing maaan :) I'm very pleased.

  • You can tell Ray wants to tell her she has no groove.

  • @ttelemaster1 I already have a hard time playing with a groove in front of my upright bass teacher... can you imagine how hard it is in front of Ray Brown!

No need to overdo it in His sight.

Besides, I think she just started.

  • @ttelemaster1 uh, i think he is trying to encourage her as any great musician and instructor would. this young student has great command of the instrument and understanding of the scales. hats off to her!

  • @ttelemaster1 No sympathy. Type of jazz people I dislike.

  • @ttelemaster1 I don't think he was questioning her swing, as much as he was trying to make her think about what she was playing instead of faking her way through the progression with chromatic walks. Like when he said that the piano player would know if she's faking it or not. He wasn't belittling her. This, is what we call teaching my friend.

  • @ttelemaster1 She really doesn't , but he's too classy to tell her , baby you aint got it .

  • I was hoping someone would pick teen town to play.

  • takes balls to be taught filmed like this

  • the girl plucks too high for my tastes ray plucks way lower

  • I don't know why this got thumbs down. Plucking low was always how I was taught to get that good thumpy sound. I think it's the best way to do it, and obviously ray likes it to.

What's good for ray is more than good enough for me.

  • Excellent teacher= excellent pupil !

  • she played ok but she would twitc her mouth witch was funny

  • She plays Cherokee really well (in Bb anyway). Really nice use of drops. Swinging well. Bet she can play it that well in all keys now too.

  • Looks like she did (is doing) okay.....

Erika Lyons first caught the attention of the public in 1978 when she was selected for the BBC Master class with American bassist Ray Brown.

This was followed by two years in New York where she studied with Buster Williams, Rufus Reid and Hal Galper. She played in major US clubs including the Blue Note and the Jazz Forum where she worked with top names such as Walter Bishop, Steve Grossman and Betty Barney.

  • That girl kicks ass.

She couldn't touch ray, but she was fucking bad ass.

  • Can anyone tell me the name of the pick-up that sir Brown used to amplify his bass in these videos?

    Many thanks!

  • Talk about an intimidating follow...

    Ray Brown is jazz.

  • i dig the gal!

  • I feel for the girl. Ray is so friggin' bad. I try so hard to sound like him.

  • Fascinating! Just to see him communicate the simplest idea to a student, who is obviously very nervous in his presence, is wonderful.

  • don't be an ass... i'd love to see you get worked over by Ray Brown in his day...

  • She plays professionally today so I guess you're wrong.

  • You have to start somewhere.

  • lol!

  • She doesn´t play wrong. She is obviously very nervous

  • I think I would die on the spot

  • Congratulations for the Gal, I'd be frozen to death if the Cat asked me to play for him!
