Judging from the clothes and stuff, this is the mid to late 70's...attitudes and standards were different. She did great playing in front of Ray...yikes! Can't think of anything more intimidating.
@aesopslyre I would say any feel she might have had, as well as not choice skill, before her date with Ray, died as soon as she got on that stage. That couldn't have been easy.
I like that she's getting lost in 1st position in a blues, and as part of his instruction to her, he just starts ripping upper register blues licks in her face. Badass!!!
Girl did a nice job. Playing infront of the great Ray Brown being FILMED, well that needs some serious guts. Everybody is learning. Good job and nice video.
@ttelemaster1 I already have a hard time playing with a groove in front of my upright bass teacher... can you imagine how hard it is in front of Ray Brown!
@ttelemaster1 uh, i think he is trying to encourage her as any great musician and instructor would. this young student has great command of the instrument and understanding of the scales. hats off to her!
@ttelemaster1 I don't think he was questioning her swing, as much as he was trying to make her think about what she was playing instead of faking her way through the progression with chromatic walks. Like when he said that the piano player would know if she's faking it or not. He wasn't belittling her. This, is what we call teaching my friend.
I don't know why this got thumbs down. Plucking low was always how I was taught to get that good thumpy sound. I think it's the best way to do it, and obviously ray likes it to.
What's good for ray is more than good enough for me.
Erika Lyons first caught the attention of the public in 1978 when she was selected for the BBC Master class with American bassist Ray Brown.
This was followed by two years in New York where she studied with Buster Williams, Rufus Reid and Hal Galper. She played in major US clubs including the Blue Note and the Jazz Forum where she worked with top names such as Walter Bishop, Steve Grossman and Betty Barney.

It takes a lot of courage to play for someone like Ray Brown. Kudos to this young lady. So much respect.

Fascinating! Just to see him communicate the simplest idea to a student, who is obviously very nervous in his presence, is wonderful.
