Vocaloid was created for those who want to write lyrics or create music. The characters themselves is to use them for (maybe?) a video that goes along with the music (see Love&Joy, Love Is War and World is Mine - Project DIVA). Miku Hatsune is the most known Vocaloid. From those characters you have the genderswapped and fan-made ones.

Actually the song is originally this title: さくら（独唱）. The lyrics in Kaito's version, titled かいと(独唱), are different, but pretty yet the same. Search the first title for a video of someone singing it, it's so pretty. :D

However, he and Meiko were both 'inspired by' real people's voices, and I'm pretty sure Fuuga Naoto was the inspiration to Kaito. :)

Yeah, that's the basic idea. xD Actually, the full list of Vocaloids is Kaito, Meiko, Miku, Len & Rin, Gakupo, Luka, and Gumi. Then you have UTAU, a free version of Vocaloid. That's where Teto comes from. (Well, actually, she was initially an April Fool's joke... but NOW she's an UTAUloid.)

Neru and Haku are characters that have risen from the Vocaloids. Neru's voice is used by adjusting the gender on MIku (or sometimes Rin's) voice and Haku is a failed Miku.
