@BobbyEshleman Learning Chinese eh? I can tell you from personal experience - what you gonna learn at home wont be of much use. You wont understand a word people are saying. Youll be like "What? huh?" all the time. You gonna learn more in 2 months being in China than in 2 years studying elsewhere. I would highly advise you watch some Chinese/Taiwanese TV shows or some of the few decent movies to get a feel of how people actually speak.

There is practically no intonation there, but hardly anyone would have trouble understanding it. Its far more comprehensible than how regular peeps talk most of the time.

Lets just say: learning material speech isnt how people actually talk. Its the same with every language.

@Buuub08 Thanks for the advice Buuub, I'll try to go to China or Taiwan as soon as I can. I want to move their after a finish school. I've actually been enjoying some mainland China TV shows/movies, subtitled of course. Do you know of Laoshu, gaoyoude1, lingosteve, and poliglotta80's youtube channels? These are all polyglots who've studied or speak Chinese, among many many other languages. If you are interested in languages their channels might interest you.

@BobbyEshleman just like buuub said, "text book" english and spoken english are two totally different things, but we understand ourselves just fine... chinese is the same way. if you listen closely, there are most definetely still tones. you probably haven't been studying too long... just a guess, not trying to be rude, or you would've noticed them.

@dkhall1129 You're not being rude at all, also you are right, I've only been studying for about a month. I will be able to watch movies and read newspapers before I move to China. The way that serious language learners should study is illustrated by the actions of the polyglots I referred to in my last comment, check out their videos if you are curious about the way I am going about learning. Conversational learning is way more effective than textbook/classroom learning.

@BobbyEshleman. I was learning Cantonese for 11 weeks when i moved to Hong Kong, then in just two years I learned to speak almost like a native, it was awesome, reading and writing were still difficult, but I didn't have very many problems conversationally.
