What is the point of these labels? The ESRB ratings system already puts labels on games to do the exact same job these new labels are going to do. How does this change anything? Sounds like a waist of time and tax dollars to me.
Here is an idea. How about we save our tax dollars on this useless piece of legislation and put it agents something that matters. Something like education, more cops (meany seem to be getting laid off with the bad economy), or paying off the national debt for starters.
Of course, the other side of it is if I see a game that has a label warning me of violence, nudity, and/or sexual situations, that would make me at least 75% more likely to buy the game.

This stuff is such BS. Signs, Signs, everywhere a sign. Warning labels have never stopped anyone from doing anything they want to do. And only a person with serious mental problems would be encouraged to violence by a video game. I think in healthy individuals it actually decreases violence in real life. And the deranged will be violent regardless. I am a gamer, a label won't stop me. I am only likely to commit violence when I can't game and can't unwind and vent my frustrations on monsters on screen. Hurting no one.

@Blackemperess and technically speaking, they already do have warning labels on them. You know, those funny symbols on the bottom left/right hand corner that tell you if drugs, sex, or violence is involved in the games content along with what is called an age rating.
I have played video games ever since I was four years old and I've never been in a fight, I've never harmed someone, I've never even insulted another human being. Video games do not make someone violent based on my experiences. However, I've also drank alcohol and never been out of drunken control. However there are people who abuse alcohol. Why on earth should we lose our rights to own a gun just because some nutjob has an itchy trigger finger? I mean, the gun didn't fire on it's own after all.

oh dear. now osama's gone, seems the us government has too much time on their hands. these warnings seem relatively pointless to me. seriously, i think people just need to use some common sense more often.
@20122017 The games doesn't make the kid go nuts, but bad parenting does.
We don't need a warning sign to see if a game contains graphical scenes or not.
If you can't tell your kid the difference between a game and reality, don't blame your kid for going bananas.
I think it's important for kids to see adult stuff and play adult games if they want to. How else are they gonna learn how and why they shouldn't watch or play that stuff.
You can probably tell how much against Soccer moms and FCC I am,
WHAT THE F*** ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT??? MY VIDEO GAMES DON'T MAKE ME ANGRY... oh.. wait.... anyways... aggression is a bad thing? I though murder was? At least video games don't make you murder people. NOT playing might though. These people have probably never played a game before, or think everythign shoudl be "pong".
What about a big lable on all churches and mosques saying: "Warning! Religion may cause you to rape children or fly planes into buildings." If they find a Counter-Strike game cd in a shooter's home, they try to link it to his behaviour. But if they find a bible in one's home, they don't. It is clear that the moral fags are simply making up stuff about things they don't have a clue about. If video games would cause aggressive behaviour, we'd have shooters every singly day.
i really don't give a shit if they put a warning on video games, its not gonna stop me from purchasing it. it could be worse in some country's they completely ban violent video games.
I heard they were going to start showing graphic pictures of rotting lungs and stuff on cigarettes along with those warnings, does that mean games will include pictures of rotting brains? lol
I don't think that it's violent media that is linked to aggressive behavior, it's linked to a lack of will to keep one's self control. I am a giant and if I were to go berserk I realize that my actions would cause someone/many people serious bodily harm and I don't want that on my conscience. Therefore the only violent acts I preform are in a controlled virtual environment or on the list field.
i once read a great quote going to a video game convention.
'video games are bad for you... yea... that's what they said about rock 'n' roll'
whenever something 'bad' happends that involves a person doing something violent. as soon as officials and media find out that that person may have played cod for example, the blame is instantly placed upon 'violent games'.
im sick of it, and im sure other gamers would be to. surely bad childhoods and parents would affect violent behaviour more. my 2c :)
The argument can also be made that violent video games teach you how to distinguish between situations where violent behavior is ok, i.e. violent behavior is ok when playing video games, and when violence is not ok, i.e. violent behavior is not ok when not playing video games.
Just like music sales are usually increased by adding warning labels, the same will happen with games that contain them. If the real reason is to lower violence, and if it is true that violent games increase violent behavior, than this method will increase violence through the increase of sales.
As a side note, I do not believe that the studies actually prove causation where playing violent video games increases violent behavior. If there is correlation, correlation does not equal causation.
Video games doesn't cause enough violent behavior just some. Something else did it if they're going to be so violent it causes serious damage.
When you were talking about surgeon generals labels I thought you were going to say "Label MMOs with may cause serious addiction" because lets face it, MMOs should have a warning label on them :P look at how many people are addicted to the mmo that shall not be named.
I don't think there actually are peer-reviewed studies showing a causation link between video games and violent behavior. The onus is on people who think there is, so this politician is without standing. As Dr. Carl Sagan so eloquently said, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."
Has been linked. That's right, it has been linked, it is not linked that way naturally. Violent games would not make you violent, but if you are violent, you'll tend to play violent games, that's why they allways find, that a murdering kid played violent video games. So the link is there, but the other way around. Normal poeple, not sociopats or utterly stupid, know the difference between killing in real life and killing a few pixels in VR.
Yes, they should simply because of the people living in the United States.
Likely scenario: A kid smacks up a guy or girl, parents sue the videogame company for billions of dollars, they get one ''scientist'' supporting that claim as witness, videogame company goes bankrupt.
Solution; label everything.
Soon hammers will have a label saying: WARNING; SMACKING ON YOUR HEAD WILL CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES. Now, i'm just being sarcastic.. or am I?
TRUE... depends how far your going to take it, it's highly unlikely i'm going to go Dragon Age style in my local supermarket, hacking down darkspawn, who are in fact innocent pensioners in the que ahead of me, with fucking twin daggers , just to loot the cahier till... *ohh* ....6 gold...
People... not the games, before games around people still did some sick shit to others... never gonna stop, better upbringing is the answer.
There they go again trying to mess with our games! I believe that a persons behavior is entirely his or her own choice and games do not affect that. The danger with video games is not that they may make you act violent towards others but that one may become addicted to them, thus causes yourself harm. So just "game" responsibly. Give yourself other activities to do like music, books, sports or whatever. Thus you can enjoy the enriching experience of gaming without the negative side effects.
WW1, WW2, Gangus Khan, Hitler, Atila the Hun, George Bush, OJ Simpson. :p
If you take away games, peoples recreational habits, stress relief, and outlets for emotional duress, then of course you are going to get more crime and people doing violent things in RL because they have nowhere else to turn too.
Maybe it's a conspiracy to get the crime rate up and thus supply more jobs to save the government from shut down.
I blame the Illuminati. They want to silence teh pixels!
Well, If the player starts freaking out about the warning they will obviously think that the player is aggressive? So why even care? just put it on the back not the front ruining the box and I'm cool with it! :-)
I realise this is old but I must point out the misinformation.
There are credible studies accepted by experts in the field proving Video Games don't cause Violence. Whereas there are none to the contrary.
The effect on minors is more ambiguous, however that's what the age rating is for.
Now for the possibility of the bill being passed, the politicians will vote the way they think their voter base would due to the fact they want to win the next election. Which will may indeed be for the bill.
@Daemeous Addendum: You would need to put this warning on all other Media which include violence including but not limited to:
Movies
TV Shows
Books
News
Music
Images
Audiobooks
The point about video games being interactive has even been argued down to the point where no one can dispute that pushing a button to shoot/melee attack someone can be mistaken for shooting a gun or actually hitting someone.
I'm going to take my PS3 Controller and push R1 to Shoot you and Triangle to steal your car.
Chances are, if you're picking up a game controller, you know the risks. It's the same principle as fast food, we know the risks and it's our choice. No, this bill should not be passed.
i think that they should spend all the money people have to pay them in a better way instead of adding stupid labels to games which already have an age restriction on anyway
Some games such as the ones that you can shoot cops may or may not invite extreme behavior... on the other hand Government should get out of the way and stop all the BS! Like the warning on snow blowers that tell you not to blow snow off of your roof with this devise. Hey if Danny dumb ass wants to take his snow blower on the roof and take a chance of cracking his mellon open, it is his right as an American to be a dumb ass and the maker of said devise is not to blame.

we should compromise and end up with half a label. just another way to take freedom away and give more control to government. we should have a big label on every iphone. no texting while driving.
here is a nice little fact for you, the number of people who have died in the past decade due to prolonged video gameplaying world wide (if you get what i mean) is 13, the number of people who have died in the uk alone last year due to duvet suffocation, is 10, the number of people who die due to ciggaret relatede illnesses is in the millions. Dont get me wrong, there all tradgic deaths, but politicians should know how to prioritise.
Of course is it true but this labels are stupid idea. We can bidden use web broswer for kids because there they can find porn or puts labels on a bus "WARNING:There is a possibility of an accident."
HAH, No I was violent long before I even touched a video game thanks to bullies.getting in my way every day. Dumb behaviour puttin' labels on all games. It's like 25% VAT on electronic components.. Let's put labels on tissues and lube, lotion etc warning against hairy palms for Schpanking the monkey instead! ;D
Health warnings are just a form of state patronization of a market demographic which the government has no business intruding into anyway. It's up the the buyer to exercise their critical capacity when purchasing an item and the seller's duty to provide all information including risks as the deal is a two party affair, no place for the state in market. At the end of the day it's an annoying form of state regulation.
It doesn't matter whether the games cause aggressive behavior or not. Companies, groups and individuals that make games should be able to design the cover as they see fit, without the government telling them what they should or should not put there.
The notion that "video games may lead to excessive behavior", is a vague and non-sensical argument. Aggressive individuals people play aggressive games.
These laws simply makes Torrent games desirable. Instead ten labels with warning people want see fast loading games. The same hapened with movies. While you see don't steal another notices from FBI, you could already watch through intro.
This is why organizations like ESRB or PEGI exist, yo inform the buyer of the content of the videogame and if theres violence in it or sex or drugs or any of the fun stuff.
I COMPLETELY agree with the politicians, after I have played Mario game. I TOTALLY think that I can break the floor with the top of my heads, diving into my toilet without harms, and eating mushroom so I can have EXTRA live. And most importantly, and I think I can kick a turtle, slamming them into politicans and they will fall into hell like in Mario game.
Hell yeah, video games have deluded me so bad(sarcasm).....
Yeah I agree with her. There's no reason for us to see a giant label on our game's boxes. I totally disagree with that belief that games can modify people's behaivor. It has nothing to do with that.
as long as lil 12 year old kids dont fucking play with their annoying voices and whining that they suck! :D... theres a vote that'll go around bout ppl who are of age can play certain games... 17+ needs to happen :P... if ya agree... and that vote comes around... you gonna vote?...
@haggard316 nice ending with the "noob" part lol... anyways... point being... idc bout the parents... im just saying the lil kids shouldn't play game they gonna whine bout... if there would be a way for kids that shouldn't play game till a certain age id vote... but if the kid can act "mature" enough... it be fine... so anyone who has kids... plz... make sure they arent whinny brats and actually can be mature one 17+ games...
i have an innocent question. Most violent media originates from Asia (japan) so why is that by research on Japanese people says the suicide rates are up but not the homocide/ hate crime. since they come out with it first they may have more exposer to the "violence" in video games and media.
of course video games causes violence ;)... proof: i play a bucket load of violent games (gears of war, god of war) and i am a very violent person mwahahahaha... i once was so angry that i killed a fly with an empty water bottle instead of with my hands hehehehe =)
Hi Nixie! You looks just super ;) In my opinion, yes exesive video games "exposition" produces the sindroms which we never had seen before video games of this realism level existed, and before thumb me down, just stop and think a liitle and you will see it yourself! And I don't say that video games are the bad, absolutely not, as I'm being playing Call of Duty since it was created, Quakes, Counter-Strike etc., but the PC's dont have to become the only reality that the kids know!!nospaceleft
It's a problem Nixie and am glad you 'notice'. I can tell you from Australia that amongst those new methods of control, there is a 'Carbon Cult" that are not happy that the people in many countries cannot even afford to emit a molotov cocktail, they/? also want to 'Carbon Tax' what little they have left to emit.
Piers Corbyn the Astrophysicist is/was right about the earth climate following a solar cycle and so the world is cooling. Coldest summer i have ever experienced in Southern Australia.
In my mind there's already a rating scale. Aka M is for mature and E is for everyone. On account "science" cannot prove the negative effects of videogames without a doubt this new "warning" would be premature. With cigarettes we are certain they cause cancer and are bad for your health. Not so cut and dry with gaming! As for parents complaining about "videogame violence" they're looking for a new scapegoat. Before it was risque music videos and certain books which were targeted.
Maybe we need warning labels on the hood of cause warning use that to stand in front of while car is moving may cause harmful results..or perhaps we need labels on bath tubs that state if the device is used to bath a cat may result in scratches and bleeding with loud screeching and hissing noises...perhaps instead of wasting time trying to for warn and pre worry maybe ...just maybe we would use our common senses ** warning this statement may cause some disagreement** legal disclaimer here :-)
There is no point in doing it since everything is going full digital anyways. That congressman is prolly an old DA............like most congressmen/women.
I think if they're worried about this kind of stuff at all they should just give the reason for the ratings on the front of the case instead of the back.
Instead of passing some moronic legislation on video games the Capitol building crooks should be putting some restraint to the industrial-military complex and the banks. But I guess is too much to ask the dogs to bite the hand of the master...
that is so bs they would even think of doing something like that but i guess cant be too suprised this day and age.. if someone is to get violent or whatsoever off a video game or even movies?? isnt jujst a matter or self control for that person
I think violent behavior cause of games is an excuse i play violent games such as gears of war and im not violent.

Oh Yeah I think some of these games certainly make "some" kids violent. but I dont know if spanking the monkey makes your hands hairy ;)
20122017 10 months ago
@20122017 The games doesn't make the kid go nuts, but bad parenting does.
We don't need a warning sign to see if a game contains graphical scenes or not.
If you can't tell your kid the difference between a game and reality, don't blame your kid for going bananas.
I think it's important for kids to see adult stuff and play adult games if they want to. How else are they gonna learn how and why they shouldn't watch or play that stuff.
You can probably tell how much against Soccer moms and FCC I am,

What about a big lable on all churches and mosques saying: "Warning! Religion may cause you to rape children or fly planes into buildings." If they find a Counter-Strike game cd in a shooter's home, they try to link it to his behaviour. But if they find a bible in one's home, they don't. It is clear that the moral fags are simply making up stuff about things they don't have a clue about. If video games would cause aggressive behaviour, we'd have shooters every singly day.

tlwdssd 10 months ago
I don't think that it's violent media that is linked to aggressive behavior, it's linked to a lack of will to keep one's self control. I am a giant and if I were to go berserk I realize that my actions would cause someone/many people serious bodily harm and I don't want that on my conscience. Therefore the only violent acts I preform are in a controlled virtual environment or on the list field.
bryarmacgowan 10 months ago
i once read a great quote going to a video game convention.
'video games are bad for you... yea... that's what they said about rock 'n' roll'
whenever something 'bad' happends that involves a person doing something violent. as soon as officials and media find out that that person may have played cod for example, the blame is instantly placed upon 'violent games'.
im sick of it, and im sure other gamers would be to. surely bad childhoods and parents would affect violent behaviour more. my 2c :)
jedixo 10 months ago
Your hot.
TheWalrusHunter 10 months ago
The argument can also be made that violent video games teach you how to distinguish between situations where violent behavior is ok, i.e. violent behavior is ok when playing video games, and when violence is not ok, i.e. violent behavior is not ok when not playing video games.
EsHammer1001 10 months ago
Just like music sales are usually increased by adding warning labels, the same will happen with games that contain them. If the real reason is to lower violence, and if it is true that violent games increase violent behavior, than this method will increase violence through the increase of sales.
As a side note, I do not believe that the studies actually prove causation where playing violent video games increases violent behavior. If there is correlation, correlation does not equal causation.
EsHammer1001 10 months ago
Video games doesn't cause enough violent behavior just some. Something else did it if they're going to be so violent it causes serious damage.
When you were talking about surgeon generals labels I thought you were going to say "Label MMOs with may cause serious addiction" because lets face it, MMOs should have a warning label on them :P look at how many people are addicted to the mmo that shall not be named.
espositokj 10 months ago
Chlorofluorocarbons DO deplete the ozone layer.
I don't think there actually are peer-reviewed studies showing a causation link between video games and violent behavior. The onus is on people who think there is, so this politician is without standing. As Dr. Carl Sagan so eloquently said, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."
phucyoutoob 10 months ago
Has been linked. That's right, it has been linked, it is not linked that way naturally. Violent games would not make you violent, but if you are violent, you'll tend to play violent games, that's why they allways find, that a murdering kid played violent video games. So the link is there, but the other way around. Normal poeple, not sociopats or utterly stupid, know the difference between killing in real life and killing a few pixels in VR.

seriously, all politicians should also require to wear a banner in front of their chest saying: could be a lying dirty politician.
hungryhamsters 11 months ago
Yes, they should simply because of the people living in the United States.
Likely scenario: A kid smacks up a guy or girl, parents sue the videogame company for billions of dollars, they get one ''scientist'' supporting that claim as witness, videogame company goes bankrupt.
Solution; label everything.
Soon hammers will have a label saying: WARNING; SMACKING ON YOUR HEAD WILL CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES. Now, i'm just being sarcastic.. or am I?
pwiReflecteD 11 months ago
TRUE... depends how far your going to take it, it's highly unlikely i'm going to go Dragon Age style in my local supermarket, hacking down darkspawn, who are in fact innocent pensioners in the que ahead of me, with fucking twin daggers , just to loot the cahier till... *ohh* ....6 gold...
People... not the games, before games around people still did some sick shit to others... never gonna stop, better upbringing is the answer.
TigerEyeJewel 11 months ago
There they go again trying to mess with our games! I believe that a persons behavior is entirely his or her own choice and games do not affect that. The danger with video games is not that they may make you act violent towards others but that one may become addicted to them, thus causes yourself harm. So just "game" responsibly. Give yourself other activities to do like music, books, sports or whatever. Thus you can enjoy the enriching experience of gaming without the negative side effects.

They want to silence teh pixels!

conorsulli 11 months ago
I realise this is old but I must point out the misinformation.
There are credible studies accepted by experts in the field proving Video Games don't cause Violence. Whereas there are none to the contrary.
The effect on minors is more ambiguous, however that's what the age rating is for.
Now for the possibility of the bill being passed, the politicians will vote the way they think their voter base would due to the fact they want to win the next election. Which will may indeed be for the bill.
Daemeous 11 months ago
@Daemeous Addendum: You would need to put this warning on all other Media which include violence including but not limited to:
Movies
TV Shows
Books
News
Music
Images
Audiobooks
The point about video games being interactive has even been argued down to the point where no one can dispute that pushing a button to shoot/melee attack someone can be mistaken for shooting a gun or actually hitting someone.
I'm going to take my PS3 Controller and push R1 to Shoot you and Triangle to steal your car.
Daemeous 11 months ago 18
Chances are, if you're picking up a game controller, you know the risks. It's the same principle as fast food, we know the risks and it's our choice. No, this bill should not be passed.
