Trust me, you wouldn't wan't to miss this brilliantly acted, brilliantly paced, brilliantly shot, brilliantly written, brilliantly directed (etc.) BRILLIANT FILM. I was hesitant to watch this after viewing the trailer but I am so glad I did! Hands down, the BEST detective&thriller movie! :D

South Korean films are by far some of the best in the world...it is hard to find films that have not only great story but also greatly shot stories, this is just one amongst a bunch of films that are amazing.

Gosh this is such a gorgeously crafted film. And i really have to say the ending scene is once again, just beautiful. The cinematography - the music, the lines, just the whole aura of that end just made me feel like I was one with the characters there.

I love this movie and fasnating w/ actual murder. Per detective Nam Sang Kuk (actual officer) said that actual killer might be 67yrs oldman who died at his house in 1993. He said that they found three gray hair at the crime scene. Unfortunately, they did not have such technology to compare those hairs to his DNA. Anyway, this is one good movie and enjoyed it very much!

About Memories of Murder, I still consider it the best suspense/thriller of the decade even after seeing The Chaser. The Chaser is an awesome movie but I think it takes a lot (voluntarely or involunterly) from MM. The chase scenes, the way the victims are "taken cared of"...but yes...it's definetly mandatory for the ones who enjoyed this one along with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.

Be aware that the Palm Picture DVD version doesn't provide really good subtitles. I suggest that you find another version.

If you love this movie, make sure you also check out "The Chaser". It's really good.

this film was brilliant. I just watched it. Honestly, this is film at its highest. The juxtaposition of technology with folk wisdom in changing times while detectives desperately try to catch a criminal. When the detective says "this document is a lie"... waaah... i could identify with that character so much; I bet everyone was thinking 'where is our truth?" And the last scene is absolutely beautiful (people who saw this movie will agree..).

one man (age 39~41) has recently been arrested in korea for killing (sexual abuse possible) and cutting bodies of two young girls (age 9, 11) in An-Yang, a city very close to Hwa-Sung where that serial murder took place. Now he has been found to be related to several rape-related charges, and the possibility of other murders cannot be ruledout since the police found trace of another man's blood in his bathroom just this morning. Funny..or rather cruel thing is that,

in 1988, at the age of 19, he was actually arrested for charge of rape and killing of another teenage girl (in Su-Won, again, another city proximal to Hwa-Sung). but he was released because the accomplice suddenly died during the course of investigation, and the blame was on the detectives, accused of using violence to wring the confession out of them (just an accusation; it is believed the accomplice died a day after falling on the head)

The detective had to go to jail for that, but in the jail, his cellmate told him that the accused confessed his crime of killing the teenage girl. Funny thing is that, this man's profile totally matches the profile of Hwa-Sung serial murderer, such as the style of murder (raping, killing, damaging bodies), blood type, montage, knowledge about the map of railway in the region (where most of the Hwa-Sung murders took place), location of residence, etc...

This man will definitely be charged for the deaths of two young girls, but the suspision grows that he might also be connected to the Hwa-Sung case. but even if he is found to be related to Hwa-Sung serial murder case, it is too bad that he cannot be charged for that, since the statute of limitations is now over... the little girl said 'it was just oridinary person'and the final scene of the movie indicates that the murderer was just ordinary joe...the police were looking for someone special..with distinctive features..but the murderer was just a normal person.The SCARY THING is...the killer is still out there and could and would have watched this movie...thinking to himself that 'oh yeah...i killed those people..i commited those murder...and 'reliving' his moments...hence Memories of murder" so freaky!

Lousy trailer, top notch movie. Its amazing just how funny the first half of it is considering how haunting the later parts are. I think the Zodiac comparison is apt, as both work superbly well as police thrillers but also have underlying messages (Zodiac can be viewed as a commentary on the information age, while MoM is a brutal critique of the borderline fascist government of the 80's).
