my xterra is a KA24DE powered 2000 XE-sport. (bigger tires, lower gears, closer ratios in 2-5 gears but a granny granny low 1st, roof rack, step rails and mud flaps, RF stereo, and bilsteins). ordinarily a 4 cylinder xe model wouldnt have the rails, or the big tires or the bilstiens or anything. they where horribly base model. lol my aunt has a newer xterra S, both cars are very refined and user friendly. but the older ones with the KA24DE and VG33E lacked power.
I'm trying to Decide between a 2008 Forrester XT, Jeep Liberty and Nissan Xterra. I don't go off road much but living here in New England I want to be able to drive safely through all kinds of weather conditions. I will keep it for 5-6 years and will put about 20K miles per year on it so I want something reliable and durable. Gas mileage is also important but I realize the Nissan and Jeep aren't very good as far as mileage goes. Any suggestions?
@Vanrocco66 I have a xterra, just to say that it depends what kind you get. The S, SE, or Off Road (which I prefer). It gets 18 MPG average and has plenty of power. My Xterra is in the 90,000 Mile range and there is no way anyone could tell.
I like the positive enthusiasm, but it's not an 08, there's no pushing trees with that bumper, and they don't have LSD's!! That being said, I love my Xterra!!
I have an '06. Good power and looks but the cheap parts used in this vehicle and the seemingly endless recalls (four in five years) have tarnished my love for this vehicle.
I have a 07 It has 3.73 gears. I got after my 94 toyota dx truck 4.56 gears got totalled. It gets bettr mileage (19 vs 15 ) but the gears are very noticeable off road. I would recommend supercharging it throwing taller gears into it for offroad / street performance (Maybe 3.93 up to 4.11's) a lift kit that will allow for 31x10.50 tires. I just recently went under the vehicle and was amazed at how small the Nissan transfer case was as well as everything else.. Plenty of power though in stock 4m.

where are the diesels ? wa da fuk man ... 4 liter gas powered V6 ? america sucks assssss :))))) a 3 liter diesel engine on this car would be the deal ...
@Gospodaree yea i know what it would be better for torque, but when it comes to weight, and highway power then the 4.0 V6 is a great engine. it has lots of power and then you can tune it our for more power and better MPG.
Hey fellas please don't troll or get over protective. I really love the xterra but alot of forums say they break down all the time during off road, how ever minor it is. Is this true? I am seriously considering buying an xterra for my first car so you can imagin i'll be doin some jumps off hills and curb stomping to steal the parking at the next isle.. Is this suv the best choice for me considering my type of abuse and small wallet? please msg me some solid facts or a list love xterra tho
@strapinhotpockets Go with the 2002, i bought mine at 98,000 Love going over medians, getting out of the neighborhood when snowing, mudding and i dont even have a 4X4. it has 130,000 now and no trouble yet with it ive taken it into inspections and change oil(synthetic) every 6k miles Love it. Gas mielage sucks though but everyone knows that i only get 16 MPG City
@nhlpwnz11 is there any differences as far as the engine goes in '04 and '08? i'm looking at a 2008 xterra, and have read nothing but great reviews about them. how's yours holding up?
Sounds like a fair review to me.. I'd buy this easily before I'd even consider some domestic brand crapola, especially Goverment Motors. uh em, I mean GM!...LOL. I've owned several Nissans before and NEVER a complaint..... at least hardly ever.
@zachdechuntin yep, you're right, it's better in every aspect, smaller motor, which is a mopar part, and will likely never see the huge amounts of mileage you can get on a nissan before the motor craps out, 18" wheels vs 16" wheels means you'll spend more on tires, michelin on the jeep vs BFG's on the X, and, all other things aside, the jeep is WELL over 10K more than what I just got the 2010 xterra offroad with tow package and dvd player for....yep, look at all that "betterness"
We just got a 2002 Nissan Xterra. It was a deer rack, brush gaurs, a trailer hitch. Hmm, wheres the 4 wheel drive? Lmao. We don't got 4 wheel drive oddly. It's a fucking huge car. I love the stadium seating in the back. Especially with how high the car is. It makes you like super high.
What's with the hate? Just because the program is reviewing a car that you didn't buy,or a brand that you didn't prefer. It's not necessarily true that this car is inferior compare to yours(or what you prefer)
Why do most wrecked Xterra's have top damage..??.....Why do so many wrecked Xterra's have un- exploded air bags??could it be the old center of gravity problem.......beware newbies.....don't cut no di-do's ,,you might land on your top....
@phartsdust you are a faggot i have an xterra and might i ask what you would like to put upp agaisnt it? im sorry that it out did hummer fj cruiser and liberty? man shut the fuck up and grow a set
my mom bought me the 2009 nissan xterra on january 18th 2009 and its ok i hardly use it lol i only drive to school sometimes with it and the color is black
My wife sold her beloved Dodge pickup for a brown '08 Xterra. She loves it, I love it. We also have a newer Subaru Outback wagon, which has served us poorly in snow country... can't take it on unplowed roads. This Xterra, though, is a mountain vehicle!! Am selling my Jeep Wrangler and getting an Xterra myself for its spaciousness and superior engine.
I have a yellow 2003 X, and i LOVE IT! lol. It goes every where i want it to go...then more. I rarely even have to use 4wd, even in the mud and snow... but if you do get stuck, pop it into four, and its out in a second.. never once been completely stuck
yeah gas mileage is horrible I often average around anywhere from 12-15 mpg combined cty/hwy, but with the power and and engine I expected it to be. auto tranny shifts great. 4x4 is useful from time to time. all around satisfied!
Last weekend I picked up a used 2008 Off Road w/ Tech Package, 6sp-manual, gray with 23k miles... $19,600.00. I freakin' love it. Mileage... it ain't no gas sipper. We also tow a trailer. 37 / 6-3" & 230 # / male
@collintheninja wow I noticed that!! every orange one is always a 2003 model they need to being that color back it makes the xterra look the way it was supposed to, cool sporty, and tough as fuck! LOL I think they did that with a 2002 nissan xterra thatwas a stunning bright blue, you can wikipedia it to find out what color I'm talking about!
I will be trading in my Fx for an 09 Xterra :) whent to the fair today to go to the auto show and fell in love!!! I whent from a 02 jeep liberty sport to an 04 Fx35 and Im ready to go back to something more rugged like this.
I bought my Xterra Off Road because I needed a "real" SUV that could pull my boat and get me where I needed to go when there's 8 inches of snow on the ground. It does just that and the Fosgate stereo sounds great. Oh, it looks great too! 26 / Male
I see they have improved gas mileage while increasing the motor size from 3.3 L to 4.0 . My 2001 XTerra only gets 16 mpg with the 3.3 L motor. The stereo does not have enough power to over come road noise when the windows are down. I hope they have improved on that point. Overall really not that bad of a suv other than the gas milage.
Norcal...I hear ya on the gas mileage.I have a 2002 and it's killing me. I have to say this truck pulls great though. Overall I'm happy with it. If only I could find a set of those stock kayak racks.
They should have mentioned that the Xterra is one of only a few true SUVs that come standard with a manual transmission. Almost all suvs come standard with an automatic.
I love this vehicle. Was looking at Wrangler, which I love, but NX beats it in power, value, and room. Nissan, with a smart, attractive incentive plan, seems to want my business, whereas Jeep comes across as arrogant and stupid by not offering any incentives on Wrangler (with gas at around $4 / gal ). Can't wait to get my solar yellow off road xterra. I'm gonna feel like GI friggin' Joe.
